Answer: Notre Dame

The Victor Hugo novel known to many of us as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", together with its location on the Ile de la Cité in the historic centre of Paris, have probably made this cathedral as famous as it is today.
3. The archbishop of this church and diocese holds the highest position in the Church of England. What is the name of the Church of England's "Mother Church"?

Answer: Canterbury Cathedral

The Archbishop of Canterbury is the spiritual head of the Church of England. Since the reign of Henry VIII the monarch of the day has been the lay head ("Supreme Governor") of the Church of England. 4. In 1517 this famous religious reformer nailed his famous "Ninety-Five Theses" to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. Who was it?

Answer: Martin Luther

Martin Luther is the generally acknowledged the father of the reformation. In 1517 is key objection was to the sale of "indulgences" - which were supposed to buy specified dead people less time in purgatory. His early objectives were reform within the Catholic Church and not, of course, division.

A painting of him hangs on the wall in the Castle Church, and the largest German protestant denomination is named "Lutheran" after him. The 31st October, the day in 1517 when he nailed the thesis in Wittenberg, is sometimes referred to as "Martin Luther Day".
5. If you go to Venice, you will undoubtedly visit a gilded church where the saint to whom the church is dedicated is said to be buried. What is the name of this church?

Answer: St Mark's Basilica

The floor is so damaged by the fact that Venice is slowly sinking, that the lovely tiled floors undulate at crazy angles. St Mark is said to be buried under the altar, after his body was allegedly brought back from Egypt in a barrel of pork.
6. What is the name of the enormous church in the Vatican?

How's that for a list?
The first church on the site was built in the 4th century.
8. In the German language, by what name is Cologne Cathedral known?

Answer: der Kölner Dom

With beautiful stained glass and soaring roofs, it is one of the great cathedrals of the world. For about 150 years a busy road passed through the then incomplete building!
9. If you visit Vienna on a Sunday, you may see the Vienna Boy's Choir singing in church. Which church do they sing in?

Answer: Chapel at the Hofburg

There are now 100 boys in the choir who form four separate touring groups. Festung Hohensalzburg is the castle in Salzburg. The other two are churches mentioned in other questions.
