In 1878, fishermen from the hamlet of Glover's Harbour caught a 55 foot long squid. At the time, Guinness Book recognized it as the largest squid Ever caught. In 2001, the town commissioned a life-sized statue of the creature in an attempt to boost tourism to the area.

There is actually a Canada goose in Wawa, Ontario. The 28-foot long statue is one of the most photographed monuments in North America. It was initially built in 1963 when the mayor of the town realized that the Trans-Canada Highway under construction was set to travel just outside, and not through the town.

As with many large monuments, the original purpose was to draw tourists off the highway and into town.
