Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first holiday of the Western calendar is New Year's Day. China celebrates their own New Year based on the lunar calendar, but is January 1st also a holiday in China?

Answer: Yes

The Western New Year, or Yuandan in Chinese, is a public holiday, albeit not as important as Chinese New Year. The whole country gets a work holiday, and the coming of the New Year is celebrated just as much as, if not more than, in Western countries.
2. Along with two New Year holidays, the Chinese also get two of these Holidays, including the Western version, called "lover's day" celebrated on February 14th.

Answer: Valentine's Day

Western Valentine's Day is celebrated on the same day, the second Valentine's Day is the Qixi Festival, or Double 7s festival. Both of these festivals relate the story of the Weaver Girl and the Cowherd from the Classic of Poetry.
3. Because in the traditional Confucian school of thought the relationship between family members is meant to be one of piety and respect, not love, it may seem odd that these holidays are celebrated in China.

Answer: Father's/Mother's Day

Father's and Mother's Day is now widely celebrated in China due to this Confucian philosophy. This day gives all Chinese children a chance to express their love for their parents that might have been considered weird otherwise.
4. This holiday is not very established in China, and is seen as a sort of gimmick. What is this holiday, celebrated on the 1st of April each year in China, that the government has been promoting heavily as one way to help China's environmental pollution problem?

Answer: Arbor Day

This usually kick starts a greening campaign throughout China for the month of April. The government, since becoming more reformist, has started to put more emphasis on this day. It has not caught on big, and its impact on the environment is still relatively small.
5. International Workers' Day is a public holiday in China. This day was formed by the communist party to celebrate all public workers throughout China. The Communist government picked this day as the date for the holiday because it corresponds with Labour Day and May Day in many Western countries

Answer: May 1

The European holiday of May Day gave rise to the celebration of International Workers' Day, which is also China's de facto labour Day holiday. The United States is one of the few countries that does not celebrate this day on May 1st.
6. Easter holiday is known as fuhuojie, or Resurrection Day, and throughout most of China is marked by sales at stores and not much else. This is because the religious aspect of the holiday is not so important for Chinese people. One province, however, has more traditional celebrations due to the Russian orthodox influence in China's northeast. Which province is this?

Answer: Heilongjiang

Heilongjiang province, on the border of Siberia, has seen a lot of influence from Russia, including the Orthodox religion. It is not uncommon in this province to decorate eggs and do other easter stuff.
7. Thanksgiving is celebrated in China on the date of American Thanksgiving, the 4th Thursday in November. Although in the West this day mainly consists of gluttonously eating as much turkey as possible and watching football with family, in China most people eat duck or chicken in a small meal and celebrate more "traditionally." What is the most important part of Thanksgiving for Chinese people?

Answer: Thanking parents, teachers, friends and others

Thanksgiving is actually about that in China, giving thanks to people that you have met throughout the year. One interesting thing for foreigners living in China is that the Chinese seem to think Thanksgiving is a holiday in all Western countries, not just North America, so if you are European, do not be surprised if you are in China over Thanksgiving, and people assume it is your most important holiday of the year!
8. The day after American Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday, because of the amount of profits stores turn on this day. In China, November 11th is the largest discount shopping day in the country, but do stores also discount items for Black Friday?

Answer: Yes

Black Friday is a huge shopping day in China, and everything is discounted, although not as large as on November 11th. These couple months are busy shopping days for the Chinese as November 11th, Black Friday, December 12th, and Christmas Day are all huge shopping days in China.
9. Christmas Eve is known in China as pinganjie, or Peaceful Night. Because the Chinese word for Christmas Eve is very close in pronunciation to the pronunciation of a certain fruit, this fruit is usually given as gifts on Christmas Eve.

Answer: Apple

Pinganjie starts with a similar first syllable as pingguo, which is the Chinese word for apple. Therefore most people call the apple "peace fruit." It is common to give friends, co-workers, or teachers apples as a gift on Christmas Eve, and you will certainly see people selling individually wrapped apples on the street on this day.
10. Christmas is gaining increased popularity in China, and everyone knows what day it falls on. Although not an official holiday it still has lots of support, and lots of people celebrate the day. Which of these are you not likely to see or do in China over Christmas?

Answer: Chinese people attending Christmas mass

The holiday is very commercial in China, most stores and offices will be decorated with Christmas decorations, and garlands, trees, and poinsettias are a normal sight. Christmas in China has lost most of its religious meaning, with the Chinese not caring about the Christianity aspect. Westerners can find churches with Christmas services, but you are not likely to see more than a few Chinese people there, and the majority of the country does not know that in the West the holiday has religious origins.
