1. How many official languages are recognized by the Indian Constitution?

Answer: 23

The Indian Constitution recognizes 22 indigenous languages as per the 8th Schedule, plus English, making 23 official languages in total. Hindi is the most widely spoken language, while English is mostly used for official purposes. The other official languages are: Bengali, Assamese, Sanskrit, Urdu, Kashmiri, Konkani, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Santhali, Maithili, Nepali, Manipuri, Sindhi, Gujarati, Bodo & Dogri.

Answer: Odia

Over 120 Indian languages are written in the Devanagari script. Odia belongs to the Kalinga script. Well, both of the scripts have their origins from the Brahmic Script.

Out of the 23 official languages only 17 could be accommodated on the currency note as these are the most widely spoken languages in India. There is no such official explanation as to why only 17 languages are on the Indian Rupee!

Dravidian languages are widely spoken languages in South India. Most notable among them are Tamil (spoken in Tamilnadu), Kannada (spoken in Karnataka), and Telugu (spoken in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana).
