Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. North Carolina has some of the best place names. One of the following is a real place in NC, the others are in different US states with a similar sense of humor!

Answer: Loafer's Glory

Loafer's Glory, a small town on the banks of the North Toe river, was given its name by the townswomen who watched their menfolk doing nothing (while they did everything!) but just kicking back on the porch of the Mitchell County general store.
Cut and Shoot is in Texas, Embarrass is in Minnesota, and Kickapoo is in Kansas.

2. Until fairly recently, a traveller seeking directions to this town (now a suburb of Gawler, South Australia) might find himself directed to the nearest public toilets. Now back to its original name, Buchfelde, where was our traveller headed?

Answer: Loos

South Australia was a refuge for Lutherans leaving Catholic Germany in the late 19th Century, and many of our place names are German. During World War I these were changed to British or French names due to anti-German sentiment. Buchfelde became Loos, after Loos-en-Gohelle in France. It has since reverted to its original name.
An alternative origin for Loos is that the name changers couldn't decide between Waterloo and Woollomooloo, so they compromised!

3. When I was a kid in Kent, every Sunday afternoon my mum and I used to cycle out into the country to a village that was the 'butt' of many a joke. Where did we cycle?

Answer: Pratt's Bottom

Pratt's Bottom is indeed where we cycled. The village was named after a local noble family, not because of any outstanding familial anatomical features, but for its location. A 'bottom' is a valley or hollow. The surname Pratt is from Old English meaning sly or tricky. The name proved quite apt as Dick Turpin, the infamous English highwayman, is said to have frequented the local Bull's Head Inn in his day.

4. Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada's most easterly province, has many surprising place names. There is a particularly scenic cascade of water in Gros Morne National Park, which drops from a sheer height of 1148 ft. What is the rather rude name of this phenomenon?

Answer: Pissing Mare Falls

Pissing Mare Falls might have gotten its name from a female equine who found the sound of rushing water, shall we say, suggestive. Just a theory! Actually, the falls, and in fact the whole of Gros Morne, provide spectacular scenery and great opportunities for the amateur and professional photographer, as well as the camping enthusiast. Gros Morne was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

5. I grew up in Wagga Wagga, in New South Wales, Australia. What does this wonderfully double named name mean?

Answer: Place of many crows

Wagga Wagga is New South Wales biggest inland city. It sits on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, which often floods. Part of Wagga is protected by a levee, but North Wagga often is submerged by water. The name comes from the Wiradjuri people. "Wagga" means crow, and repeating it means "many". During World War II, Wagga Wagga was an important garrison town with both an army and air force bases within close range of the Australian capital, Canberra.

6. At the risk of sounding risque, I'll tell you of my trip today. In Blue Ball I'll begin, in Paradise I'll check in. In between I'll see a buggy and horse, in the quaint little town of Intercourse! Can you guess my home state from these town names?

Answer: Pennsylvania

Intercourse: There are a few different theories as to the origin of this name. One suggests that the town was so named for the two major roads, or courses, that intersected the area.

Blue Ball: The consensus appears to be that the town was named for the Blue Ball Inn (no longer standing). The owner hung a huge blue ball outside to help identify his business.

Paradise: No scintillating tale here. When the Post Office needed a name, the Postmaster chose the name Paradise.

7. I first came across this town name while on a family holiday in Essex, England. It conjured a peculiar image of a forest in my head! This town also gave its name to a town in Massachusetts. What is it?

Answer: Braintree

There are a few theories behind the name 'Braintree'. It may have derived from 'Rayne', a significant settlement in the area during the Norman era. 'Brain' may have also come from 'Britain', the Celtic goddess of the islands, hence the Roman name 'Britannia' for the British Isles. Braintree also translates as 'settlement by the river' as it lies near the River Brain. This seems to be the most sensible origin, but I'd like to think there was a forest of big trees with nerve-like branches and pinky-grey leaves in the area.

8. There are no less than three small villages located fairly near each other in this Canadian province; the villages are called Heart's Desire, Heart's Delight and Heart's Content. In which province of Canada are these places to be found?

Answer: Newfoundland and Labrador

Are these not beautiful place names? The villages are located in Trinity Bay, in the Eastern part of the province; thus they all border on the Atlantic Ocean. They are highly publicized by the provincial Department of Tourism, which promotes them as ideal locations for weddings and other romantic designations.

9. There is a town in South Australia on the Eyre Peninsula, named for its unique status. It's obviously a misnomer, as there is at least one other place in Australia sharing the name (in northern Tasmania).

Answer: Nowhere Else

We have a number of odd place names in South Australia - some downright rude, and some, as in Tasmania, rather whimsical, like the place called The End of the World, in Westernmost Tassie. Nowhere Else in Tasmania is south of Devonport and east of Cradle Mountain.

10. What place in the Czech Republic would James Bond avoid if he was looking for a hiding place?

Answer: Spy

Spy, pronounced s-p-e-e, is a small village in the Czech Republic with the population of 186 as of 2001. The name has nothing to do with the English word 'spy'. It probably meant 'earthwork' in Old Czech but it doesn´t exist in modern Czech any more. There is another village of this name in Belgium.
