Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. US 1, which parallels I-95, goes along the East Coast of the United States. It goes through many major cities, including Boston, New York City, Washington DC, and Miami. In which city does US 1 cross US 29 and US 50, near the center of US 1?

Answer: Washington DC

More cities that US 1 goes through include Providence RI, New Haven CT, Philadelphia PA (though not through the center), Baltimore MD, Richmond VA, Raleigh NC, and Jacksonville FL. However, in all of these cities, Interstates are better ways to get through the cities than US 1. US 1 was used to link them before the Interstates existed, though.
2. On the West Coast of the United States, there is another Route 1, which is several hundred miles long. Which state does it belong to?

Answer: California

There are several routes paralleling the West Coast. Starting with the routes closest to the coast, the major routes are California Route 1, US 101, I-5, and California Route 99.
3. Highway 1 in Australia goes around the whole continent in a complete loop. Which of these major cities does it NOT go through?

Answer: Canberra

There is also a separate Route 1 in Tasmania, which is not connected to the mainland part of Route 1.
4. In addition to Australia, there is another country that has a Route 1 forming a complete loop around its edge. What country is it?

Answer: Iceland

Except for Route 1, routes in Iceland begin with the digits 2-9, with the first digit depending on where in the country it is. Route 1 is the only single-digit route in Iceland.
5. In Canada, Route 1 connects Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, and Winnipeg. However, this route also has another designation, which continues all the way to Nova Scotia, even though its number changes throughout the eastern provinces of Canada. What is this route's non-numerical designation?

Answer: Trans-Canada Highway

The Trans-Canada Highway goes from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. The Lincoln Highway and Grand Army of the Republic Highway are in the United States, while Yonge St. is a street in metropolitan Toronto. Interestingly, there are only two roads directly connecting Manitoba and Ontario, one of which is the Trans-Canada Highway, while the other is a minor road.
6. In one particular state in the United States, Route 1 connects I-95 to the state's capital as a toll road and then continues as a free surface road until reaching Maryland. US 13 is a free alternative to the part of Route 1 that is tolled. However, this road is not US 1. Which state does this Route 1 belong to?

Answer: Delaware

There is a rule in most states that US routes cannot have the same number as a state route in the same state. US 1 misses Delaware by about 2.5 miles, but since US 1 never actually enters it, Delaware can have its own Route 1.
7. There is a Highway 1 in Baja California, Mexico, that goes from the United States border to the end of the peninsula. Near Tijuana, there is a tolled bypass of Highway 1. What is this highway called?

Answer: Highway 1D

The letter D is added to tolled alternates or bypasses of routes, which are almost always highways. Other routes with a D include 2D, 15D, 40D, 95D, and 150D.
8. In Europe, you will find E01. Which countries will you find it in?

Answer: Ireland, Spain, and Portugal

E01 is also in Northern Ireland, but E-routes are not signed in the United Kingdom (of which Northern Ireland is part, but Ireland isn't). E01 is split by the water between Ireland and Spain. This is true for a lot of E-routes in Europe, but most gaps in E-routes are shorter and have a ferry that connects them.
9. Between which two Central American countries can you travel on Route 1 without the number changing when driving into the other country?

Answer: Costa Rica and Nicaragua

Route 1 in Costa Rica and Nicaragua are both part of the Pan-American Highway, or "Carretera Panamericana" in Spanish. If you want to drive from the United States to Panama, the only countries that you do not have to drive through are Belize (which has no numbered routes) and El Salvador.

This would also apply for a trip from North America to South America except that there are no roads connecting Panama and Colombia.
10. This road in Europe is numbered 1 in its country's system, but it is also part of E22 and E37. It goes within a few miles of Hamburg, Bremen, and Münster. (Like most highways in Europe, the route bypasses the cities instead of going through the centers of the cities). Which country is this in?

Answer: Germany

In German, the official name of Route 1 in Germany is "Bundesautobahn 1". It is part of the Autobahn system, and it is about 730 kilometers long.
