Frederick York Wolseley was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1837 and, when he was 17 years old, moved to Australia. While he was working on a sheep station in New South Wales, he developed a mechanical sheep-shearing machine. In 1887, the Wolseley Sheep-Shearing Machine Company Limited was established in Sydney.

In 1889, the business was relocated to England. Three experimental cars were built before full scale production started in 1901.
