Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Army had some challenging requirements for their new vehicle. The manufacturers who submitted prototypes found which one particularly unrealistic?

Answer: Weight

The original maximum weight was 1,300 pounds. It was later raised to 2,160 pounds, a figure that was still challenging to meet. A standardized production MB weighs just under 2,500 pounds with all fluids on board.
2. Willys-Overland saw a potential untapped market for civilianized Jeeps. They developed prototypes with what group in mind?

Answer: Farmers

These first civilian Jeep prototypes, known as "AgriJeeps," were tested just before World War II ended.
3. The ruggedly handsome Willys Utility Wagon was introduced in 1946. Who designed it?

Answer: Brooks Stevens

The Willys Utility wagon was designed by Brooks Stevens. Its boxy design was intended to be easily produced by fabricators who had previously stamped panels for appliances.
4. Named after a storm, the F-head 4-cylinder engine introduced in 1950 produced 75 horsepower. It didn't exactly propel a Jeep with _________ force.

Answer: Hurricane

The Hurricane was a further development of the Go-Devil engine used in all those WWII military Jeeps. Personally, I think Go-Devil sounds a little cooler.
5. Introduced in 1955, which of these models had the longest production run of any Jeep?

Answer: CJ-5

Only one CJ-4 was produced. The CJ-6 was discontinued domestically after 1975, but continued for export until about 1981. The CJ-7 was not introduced until 1976.
6. A special model of the Willys Utility Wagon was named after which Western TV program sponsored by Willys?

Answer: Maverick

Despite its more upscale appearance, a Maverick model could only be had with rear wheel drive and the four-cylinder engine. GM later used the Bonanza and Cheyenne name on its full-sized trucks. Ford later offered two completely unrelated Maverick models.
7. Though commonplace today, which feature introduced on the 1963 Gladiator found few buyers due to its dismal reliability?

Answer: Independent front suspension

The independent front suspension was discontinued after 1965. A four-wheel-drive Jeep with independent front suspension wouldn't be seen again until 2002.
8. A V-6 engine was introduced to the Jeep in 1965. The license to use this engine was purchased from which manufacturer?

Answer: General Motors

The V-6 was a wise purchase, as it proved popular in Jeeps and the rights were later sold back to GM at a hefty profit.
9. Re-introduced in 1967, the "Jeepster" was also known by what name that sounds militaristic?

Answer: Commando

"Commando" originally referred to a soldier who specialized in surprise hit-and-run raids.
10. Jeep was sold to which manufacturer in 1972?

Answer: American Motors

Chrysler would later purchase American Motors for the sole purpose of obtaining Jeep. Ford built Jeeps during WWII. GM designed the V-6 engine used in Jeeps from 1965 to 1971.
