Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which period of time is longer? The number of years from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to the assassination of Lincoln, or the period from Lincoln's assassination to that of Kennedy?

Answer: From Lincoln's assassination to Kennedy's

The Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 and Kennedy in 1963. So the first time period is 89 years and the second is 98 years.
2. Up to the end of 2020, what is the sum of the Presidential number for the only president who was never married (James Buchanan) and the president who was married the most times (three - Donald Trump)?

Answer: 60

James Buchanan was the 15th president and the last president before the American Civil War. Donald Trump, the president in 2020, was the 45th president. His wives were Ivana Trump (married 1977-92), Marla Maples (married 1993-99), and Melania Trump (married in 2005).
3. How many years after he was shot did Teddy Roosevelt die?

Answer: 7

Teddy Roosevelt was shot during a campaign speech in 1912. He was shot in the chest and then finished his speech. A fifty page text of the speech and a metal glasses case slowed the bullet. His death in 1919 was unrelated to the assassination attempt.
4. What is the sum of the number of US presidents assassinated up to the end of 2020, plus the total number of years between the first and last of these assassinations?

Answer: 102

Abraham Lincoln was the first US president to be assassinated (1865), followed by James Garfield in 1881, William McKinley in 1901 and John F. Kennedy in 1963. There are 98 years between the first assassination on this list and the last plus the four assassinated presidents, equals 102.
5. How long did the Curse of Tippecanoe last? This will be from the year William Henry Harrison died until the year John F. Kennedy died.

Answer: 122

The Curse of Tippecanoe was a reference to the nickname of William Henry Harrison, the first US president to die in office. He was the governor of the Indiana Territory in 1811 and was commander at the Battle of Tippecanoe that year. It is also known as the Curse of Tecumseh, after the Shawnee leader against whose tribe the battle was fought.

The myth is that a curse was put on Harrison and all presidents that were elected in years ending in zero would die in office. This held from the time Harrison (elected in 1840) died in 1841 until Kennedy (elected in 1960) died in 1963. A total of 122 years. Since Ronald Reagan (elected in 1980) did not die in office, after two terms, the curse is apparently broken.
6. Joe Biden was elected the 46th President of the United States in November 2020. What is the sum of the numbers of US Presidents through Biden? (1+2+3...45, 46)

Answer: 1,081

Just add all of the numbers 1 through 46 or use the formula; (N/2)(first number + last number). n is the number of numbers, 46 in this case. So the calculation is (46/2)(1 + 46); or 23 times 47 + 1,081.
7. Since no US president, except Franklin D. Roosevelt, served more that two terms as president, why did Grover Cleveland start his presidency in 1885 and end his presidency in 1897, a total of twelve years?

Answer: He served two non-consecutive terms

Grover Cleveland served two full four-year terms (1885-1889 and 1893-1897). Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected four times and served three full terms and was just under three months into his fourth term when he died in office.
8. Richard Nixon was the first US president to resign from office. In 2019 Donald Trump became the third president to be impeached during his term, after Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Add the Presidential number for the three impeached presidents and determine the average. Which is larger, Nixon's Presidential Number, or the resulting average number of the three impeached presidents?

Answer: Nixon's Presidential number

Andrew Johnson was the 17th US president was impeached in 1868; Bill Clinton (number 42) was impeached in 1998, and Donald Trump (45) in 2019. Nixon, the 37th president resigned in 1974.
9. Who won the election for US president four score and seven years after Lincoln's term ended?

Answer: Eisenhower

A score is twenty years, so four score and seven years is 87 years. Lincoln's term ended with his assassination in 1865, so adding 87 to 1865 yields 1952. This is the year Eisenhower was first elected as President. He was re-elected in 1956.
10. Was Benjamin Harrison related to William Henry Harrison and how many years separated their presidencies?

Answer: Benjamin was a grandson of William, 48 years

Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd president, serving in between the two terms by Grover Cleveland. His grandfather William had the shortest term in office after being the first to die in office just one month after taking the oath.
