Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information

Lost Season 1: House of the Rising Sun

Locke convinces Charlie to listen to him by bringing up that he was a fan of Charlie's band, Drive Shaft. What was the title of the second album?"Lost": "House Of The Rising Sun"

Oil Change. It is likely that Locke had never listened to Charlie's band in his life, but he needed some way to make Charlie listen to him. Charlie knew the exact amount of time since he had played his guitar (eight days and eleven hours), which gave a time reference to the time on the island. He also mentioned that the guitar had been unable to fit in the cabin. (In the final scene of part three of "Exodus", Charlie is seen stuffing the guitar case into the compartment on the plane.) His guitar music provided a backdrop for the song on Hurley's CD player, Willie Nelson's "Are You Sure".

Which of the survivors was not seen wearing a striped shirt in this episode?"Lost": "House Of The Rising Sun"

Hurley. What the survivors wear may not be the most relevant or important clue available in the episodes, but it may provide some type of relation to one another. In any case, Jin is seen wearing a striped suit (which he wore since the flight). Charlie is wearing a blue striped shirt also, and Walt is often seen in stripes as well. Once again with the color red, Michael is seen wearing the red shirt in which he appears in this episode until the very last episode, while they are on the raft. (We know red naturally means "danger".) The amazing similarities and transformations which occur between this episode and "In Translation" are astounding. (There, Michael attacks Jin, Sun reveals that she speaks English to everyone, and Jin still wears the cuffs.) By the final episode, Michael and Jin have become good friends and Jin hands Michael the watch which represented his "honor" (as well as his loyalty to his work).

How many gallons of water per day did Jack estimate that the survivors on the beach would need to consume?"Lost": "House Of The Rising Sun"

23 gallons. This one required a little math: In the caves, Jack mentioned to Kate that each of the 46 survivors needed half a gallon of water each day. (46 divided by half gallons equals 23 gallons total.) Jack insisted that hauling water to the people was not going to work, but rather bringing the people to "dig in" and reside in the caves. Some survivors (such as Sun, Jin, Charlie, and Hurley, and later Claire and others) accepted the proposal and relocated. Others rejected it, such as Kate, Sayid, Michael, Walt, Sawyer, Shannon and Boone, and they remained waiting for rescue by the signal fire.

In Sun's flashback, she returned from a shopping trip with designer label bags. What name did the black bag she was holding read?"Lost": "House Of The Rising Sun"

Chanel. Chanel is a well-known, designer label for clothes, cosmetics and jewelry. It is at this point that Sun gets her Shar-pei puppy from Jin. Their marriage is now visibly strained, and work for her father has begun to consume Sun's husband.

In which of Sun's flashbacks (six were seen in this episode) did she NOT receive a gift from Jin?"Lost": "House Of The Rising Sun"

Fourth. In the first flashback (at the cocktail party), Jin met Sun in the gazebo and gave her the white orchid flower as a vow of his love and the promise to get her a diamond. This became reality in the second flashback, which took place on a bridge near a gorgeous lake, in which Jin gave Sun a diamond engagement ring and promised to marry her after working for her father. (Sun's distraught expression hinted the danger involved.) In the third flashback, where it was apparent things were beginning to change, Jin gave Sun the Shar-pei puppy for company. (Sun asked if he remembered when all she needed was a flower.) The dog was much bigger by the forth flashback, which showed the passing of time and the realization that Sun no longer knew her husband.

Where in Iraq is Sayid from?"Lost": "House Of The Rising Sun"

Tikrit. Just a little factual information: Tikrit is located nearly 100 miles north of Baghdad in Iraq, and is the location of the old palace of Baiji. There are also several large military bases in Tikrit. Michael sarcastically asked Sayid where he came from, because of Sayid's language use. (Once again, he is faced with questions of discrimination and doubt.) This was after Jin attacked Michael, and Sayid and Sawyer had to restrain him with the Marshal's handcuffs.

As Jack led Charlie, Locke, and Kate to the caves for fresh water, Kate asked how Jack had come to find this place. How did Jack respond?"Lost": "House Of The Rising Sun"

Luck. Here we view one of the first (of many) mysterious island discoveries. The bodies of a male and female, at least forty or fifty years old, are found in the caves. With them are the black and white stones, which are symbolically important throughout many episodes. Theories were raised that the bodies, nicknamed "Adam and Eve", were in fact those of Amelia Earhart and her copilot/navigator. Although the timing may be approximately correct, the theory was largely dismissed by further evaluation. It is concluded that "Adam and Eve" were just two among many unfortunate whose fate brought them to the mysterious island.

In Sun's first flashback, how many glasses of champagne were seen on the waiter's (Jin's) tray?"Lost": "House Of The Rising Sun"

Three. In the flashback, Jin and Sun appear in stark contrast to who they have now become on the island. We see Sun, dressed elegantly and chatting with two friends, as a waiter brings a tray carrying three cocktail glasses. We know at once by Sun's facial expressions that it is no ordinary situation. Later, in the gazebo, Sun and Jin secretly reunite and he gives her a white orchid as a vow for his love. While this episode reveals the change in their personalities and relationship from Sun's perspective, the partner episode "In Translation" fills the gaps and explains from Jin's point of view.

At the airport, when Sun was about to leave Jin and disappear for good, Jin showed her something that changed her mind. What was it?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

A white flower. Sun looked out the airport door and saw the car waiting to take her away. She started to walk away, but glanced back at Jin. He held up a white flower like the one he had given her at the party before they were married. She decided not to leave after all, and went to his side.

With Locke's help, Charlie found something he wanted very badly. What was it?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

His guitar. After convincing Charlie to relinquish the last of his drugs, Locke told him to look up. When Charlie did so, he saw his guitar, still in its case and undamaged.

Charlie finally found someone on the island who knew about his rock band, Drive Shaft. Who was it?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

Locke. Previously, when Charlie mentioned his band to someone, he was met with a blank look. He was surprised when Locke, one of the older castaways, knew about Drive Shaft, liked their music, and had both of their albums.

What did Jin agree to do so that Sun's father would let him marry her?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

Work for him. Jin agreed to a year of management training followed by a year of working at Sun's father's factory in order to get his consent to the marriage.

What dangerous situation did Charlie face while on the water run with Kate, Jack, and Locke?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

He stepped on a beehive.. Charlie slipped away from the others to take some of his drugs. He accidentally stepped on a beehive, and Locke told him the hive would split and the bees would attack when Charlie stepped off. Charlie revealed that he had "an irrational fear of bees".

Why did Jin attack Michael?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

Jin thought Michael had stolen his watch.. Sun told Michael that the watch he was wearing had belonged to her father. Sun explained that protecting the watch was an issue of honor to Jin. Michael said that he had found the watch two days ago, and didn't know who it belonged to.

Jin attacked Michael, and the two fought on the shoreline. Who broke up the fight?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

Sayid and Sawyer. Sun and Walt screamed for Jin to stop, but were unable to intervene. Sayid and Sawyer ran to their aid, with Sayid tackling Jin while Sawyer helped Michael to safety.

What was Michael holding in his hands when he released a handcuffed Jin from the fuselage?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

An axe. Although Michael knew that Jin didn't understand English, he explained the watch situation and returned Sun's father's watch to Jin. Then he used the axe to cut Jin free of the fuselage.

Sun spoke her first English words of the entire series in this episode. What were they?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

I need to talk to you.. After the altercation between Jin and Michael, Sun knew the best way to diffuse the situation would be to communicate directly with Michael. She told him that her husband did not know that she could speak English.

When Sun met with the woman who was helping her "disappear", what time did the woman tell Sun to slip away from the airport?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

11:15. Sun was told to make an excuse and slip out of the airport at exactly 11:15. A car would be waiting to help her escape. Sun was asked to repeat the precise time several times, which she did.

Michael and Walt each believed that the other did not really know him. To prove it, Walt asked Michael to tell him his birthdate. Michael correctly answered; when was Walt born?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

August 24. After correctly telling Walt his birthday, Michael asked Walt if he could provide the same information. Walt did not know his father's birthday, although he asked him for this information later in the episode.

What kind of puppy did Jin give Sun in the flashback?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

Sharpei. After giving Sun the puppy, Jin told her that he thought it would be good company for her since he was working so much. He also pointed out that it would be her responsibility to take care of it.

How long did Jack estimate that the bodies had been in the cave?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

40-50 years. Jack put the age of the bodies at 40-50 years based on the fact that it would take that long for their clothing to decay to the extent that it had.

What colors were the stones that Jack found with the bodies in the cave?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

Black and white. Jack found a small pouch with the bodies. It contained two smooth, small stones, one black and one white. He pocketed them when Locke entered the cave.

What color was Sun's dress at the party from her flashback?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

Pink. Sun's party dress was pink and low-cut in the back, a strong contrast to her conservative attire on the island.

While preparing to go for fresh water, Charlie referred to Locke by a nickname. What was it?"Lost" Season 1, "House of the Rising Sun"

Great White Hunter. Charlie was encouraging Kate and Jack to hurry up and leave for the water run. He explained that everyone was waiting for the water and the Great White Hunter (Locke) was getting restless.

What was the first phrase we hear Sun say in English?"House of the Rising Sun"

"I need to talk to you". As Sun watched Michael working in the jungle, she remembered her plan to leave Jin in a flashback. This seemed to strengthen her resolve, and she approached Michael. She said to him, "I need to talk to you", in English. No one had ever heard her speak English before this. Michael was understandably shocked. Sun said that her husband didn't know she spoke English due to his bad temper, a fact Michael was well aware of. Sun explained to him that the whole incident had occurred over the watch Michael was wearing it was her father's, and protecting it was a matter of honor for Jin.

As Jack and Kate were returning with water, they came upon Sayid in the jungle. What was Sayid doing?"House of the Rising Sun"

Chopping wood. When Jack and Kate came back with water for the others, they approached Sayid in the jungle chopping wood. Sayid was very happy to see the water. This was where he told Jack and Kate about the problem with Jin. He also said that he was going to try to talk to Sun.

What object did Jack use to try to cover the beehive?"House of the Rising Sun"

A suitcase. As poor Charlie was standing on the beehive, Jack was trying to use a suitcase to cover the hive so that Charlie could move off the hive. Charlie was extremely skeptical of the plan and didn't think it would work. He was also scared out of his mind of the bees. When Charlie forgot himself and slapped at a bee, he accidentally stomped through the hive, releasing a horde of angry bees. Everyone ran away to the caves, and Charlie was stung multiple times. This action resulted in Kate discovering the two bodies.

Who gave Jin a bottle of water in this episode?"House of the Rising Sun"

Jack. After bringing back water from the caves, Jack gave Jin a bottle of water while he was handcuffed in the hot sun. He told Jin to drink it slowly and to drink just a little bit at a time. This was a very nice gesture, considering that Jack knew what Jin had done.

Did Jin say he gave Sun a puppy because he knew she loved dogs?"House of the Rising Sun"

No. In a flashback, Sun came home one day and found a present from Jin, which turned out to be a puppy. Jin said he got it for her because he had been working long hours and he thought she would like the company. Sun liked the puppy, but she reminded Jin of the time when all he had to give her was a flower. Just then, Jin's phone rang, and he hurried to answer it, as it was her father. Later, when Sun was discussing her plan to leave Jin with the decorator, she asked the woman to take care of her dog when she was gone.

As Jack and Kate discussed the two bodies in the cave, Jack brought up a weird incident that occurred earlier on the island. Which incident was this?"House of the Rising Sun"

Shooting a polar bear. When Kate asked where the bodies had come from, Jack asked her if she remembered the shooting of the polar bear. Kate looked at him strangely and said she did, to which Jack replied, "Where did that come from?", thus answering Kate's question with his own question. The bodies were later dubbed Adam and Eve.

What did Michael realize that Walt didn't know about him?"House of the Rising Sun"

His birthday. When Walt asked Michael what he did to Jin to provoke the attack, Michael was surprised that Walt would ask such a thing. Michael asked Walt what his mother had said about him, and Walt said that she had never talked about him. Michael found out that Walt didn't even know his father's birthday. At the end of the episode, Walt asked Michael when his birthday was.
