Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who appears in the first episode of the season?

Answer: Mr. Rogers

He visits Elwood City and speaks to the kids at the school. Before he goes to the school, he spends a few nights at the Read house. Arthur tells his friends about Mr. Rogers coming to town, but they mock Mr. Rogers and they say that only babies like him. He was going to tell them that Mr. Rogers was staying at the Read house but then he decided not to. Throughout most of the episode, Arthur tries to hide Mr. Rogers from his friends. Arthur delivers Mr. Rogers' mail for him and when Mr. Rogers leaves the house, Arthur makes himself, Mr. Rogers, and D.W. wear beards so that no one will recognize them.

Buster meets them in the park and sees the truth and he meets Mr. Rogers. Arthur tells Buster not to tell anyone else. The other kids see Arthur with a beard and they notice his strange behavior and they get suspicious. At night, some of them go to the Read house to spy on them. Ms. Tibble is on neighborhood watch and she calls to police to report a burglary at the Read house. The news shows Mr. Rogers at the Read house, showing that there was no burglary and letting everyone know that Mr. Rogers is at the Read house. Arthur initially decides he is too embarrassed to go to school again. Mr. Rogers tells him that if his friends are real friends, they will not make fun of him. He also tells him that his friends are indeed real friends because they showed genuine concern when they thought he was being burglarized. At school, Mr. Rogers speaks to Arthur's class and Arthur tells the class that Mr. Rogers stayed at his house. At the end of the episode, Binky wants Mr. Rogers' autograph and Arthur's autograph.

During the episode, Mr. Rogers is animated as an Aardvark. In the middle part of the episode, Mr. Rogers appears as himself and explains how he got to be on the show and he shows us a little bit about how they made the episode.
2. In "Draw!", who is the first person to draw a comic about Francine?

Answer: Fern

Francine insults Fern and hurts her. Arthur tries to convince Francine to apologize to Fern, but Francine does not care that she hurt Fern's feelings nor is she worried about what Fern might do. Fern draws a comic about a cow named Frank who bullies everyone else and she shows it to the other kids. When Francine sees the other kids laughing, she wants to know why. They show her the comic and she realizes that it's about her. The other kids aren't concerned about her feelings because she'd bullied them all in the past and now she's getting a taste of her own medicine. At lunch, the other kids draw comics that are really about her. Mr. Haney then announces that a carnival is beginning. The kids hurry outside and leave the comics on the floor. Ms. McGrady finds them.

Fern visits Ms. McGrady's fortune teller tent. Ms. McGrady tells Fern to round up all the kids who drew the comics for an ultimate revenge prank on Francine and Fern does so. Ms. McGrady tells them to hide behind the drapes and then they will dump a vat of green gloop on Francine when Francine visits the tent and Ms. McGrady says "Green gloop." Francine visits the tent and Ms. McGrady shows her the comics. Francine tells Ms. McGrady that these comics make her feel terrible, but she also confesses that she should have never insulted Fern. The other kids feel remorse for her and refuse to drop the green gloop on her. Just as Francine leaves the tent, the other kids come out of their hiding place and apologize to her. Ms. McGrady tells the kids "Never serve anyone a stew that you wouldn't want to eat yourself." Arthur tells Ms. McGrady not to dump the green gloop on anyone. After the kids walk away, we see that there was no green gloop and that there were just balloons and streamers.
3. In "Binky Barnes, Art Expert", when the kids go on a field trip to an art museum, what fascinates Binky about one particular painting?

Answer: It's hanging sideways

For art class, the kids are placed into groups of three, and then they are taken to an art museum. They must pick one painting at the museum and present a report on it. Arthur, Buster, and Binky are grouped together. Arthur and Buster hate the idea of working with Binky because he is a bully and he repeated third grade. At first, they are terrified that he will force them to do the report he wants them to do, which will make them fail. They feel that their worst fears are confirmed when Binky points to one particular painting and says that it is hanging sideways. Binky is 100% sure that the painting is hanging sideways, but Arthur and Buster refuse to believe him because they think the painting was hung by art experts (it was more likely just hung by people who work at the museum) and they give no credibility to Binky because he repeated third grade.

Arthur and Buster are then terrified that if they do the report Binky wants, everyone will laugh at them and they will fail. They are afraid to tell him how they really feel because they are afraid he will beat them up. They propose a compromise where they will do the report they want and he does the report he wants. Binky happily agrees to this. On the day of the report, it turns out that Arthur and Buster have no report to give. They were so worried about being bullied by Binky that they did not do their report. So, they plagiarize the museum catalogue for their part of the report. Just as the teacher is about to tell them that they failed, Binky steps in and delivers his part of the report. He says that he researched the painting and sent it to several art experts. One of them sent him a video that shows the artist hanging up the painting the correct way. It turns out that Binky was right. He appears on the news and is congratulated as the museum employees turn the painting the correct way. The teacher gives Binky an A+, but then she tells Arthur and Buster that they need to do an original report the next day, this time without Binky's help. They return to the museum to see if any other paintings in the museum are sideways or upside down. They cannot find one.
4. In "Arthur's Lucky Pencil", what is painted onto the pencil?

Answer: Eye

The episode begins with a lot of bad things happening to Arthur. Mr. Ratburn shows a boring slide show in class. Arthur looks out the window and sees Ms. Sweetwater's class having fun. It rains, so Arthur has to cancel his plans to have outside fun. He loses some coin flips to D.W., giving her the TV privileges. He does not like dinner. He would have liked dessert, but Pal ate it. The next day, it rains again. Arthur concludes that he is cursed.

Arthur finds a mysterious pencil on the ground. It is a blue pencil with an eye painted on it. He drops D.W. off at Grandma Thora's house and then hurries to school. There is a pop quiz. Arthur sharpens the mysterious pencil and takes the quiz with it. In the lunch line, just as it appears there are no more Boston Cream Pies, Ms. McGrady puts out a second batch and she gives Arthur and Buster extra big slices. Buster thinks that the pencil changed Arthur's luck. Arthur does not believe this until they return to class and get their quizzes back. When Arthur gets an A, he believes that this is a lucky pencil and he is glad that it is his. He lends it to Brain to solve a difficult math problem, then he lends it to Muffy for her new hairstyle, then he lends it to Francine so she can use it as a drum stick when one of her real drum sticks breaks, and to Buster to help him with table hockey. The pencil serves all of these purposes very well. As Arthur keeps sharpening it, it gets shorter and shorter until it's basically just a stub. Arthur then decides that he will not lend it to anyone and he will never use it again unless it's an emergency (an example he gives is if he's bitten by a venomous snake). Arthur then loses the pencil. The next day, he takes a test with a regular pencil. He gets an A on the test. There's also more Boston Cream Pie in the cafeteria that day. Arthur then concludes that the pencil is not a lucky pencil and he does not need it. At the end of the episode, D.W. fishes out of the trash. Arthur realizes that's where he put it, and then he chases D.W. around hoping to get it back.
5. In "D.W. the Picky Eater", what is D.W.'s least favorite food until the end of the episode?

Answer: Spinach

When the Read family goes to a restaurant and D.W. gets a salad with spinach in it, she shouts "I HATE SPINACH!" and bangs her fists on the table. This causes the salad to fly up in the air and land on the waiter's head, which causes people to laugh, which causes him to quit. Jane scolds D.W. by calling her "Dora Winifred Read", which D.W. hates being called more than anything else. When the family gets home, Jane sends D.W. to her room and bans her from going to any more restaurants with them until she learns to eat what's in front of her.

This means that she will not go to the "Once Upon a Restaurant" where Grandma Thora wanted to go for her birthday. Thora decides to have her birthday party at the Read house so that D.W. can join them. This makes Arthur very upset. For much of the rest of the episode, Arthur and his friends try various methods to trick D.W. into eating spinach. Most of them fail. Eventually, Arthur and Buster talk on the phone with D.W. eavesdropping. Arthur pretends that he is talking to Grandma Thora and he says Grandma Thora has changed her mind and they will go to the restaurant without D.W. This fools D.W. and she tells her parents that she wants to go to the restaurant and try new foods. At the restaurant, D.W. gets a pie that she really loves. When David asks the waiter for the recipe, the waiter turns out to be the same one as the one from earlier in the episode (the one who quit working at the restaurant that they went to at the beginning of the episode) and he loudly says that the pie has a lot of spinach. This is when D.W. says that she loves spinach and the episode ends.
6. In "Arthur Makes a Movie", he and his friends try to make a movie similar to a James Bond movie. According to Prunella, is their movie just like a James Bond movie?

Answer: No

Arthur sees a promo for a James Bond movie and he wants to go, but it is rated PG-13 and he is only eight. It turns out several of his friends also wanted to see the same movie, but they were not allowed to for the same reason. So, they decided to make their own movie which was supposed to be like a James Bond movie.

They come across several obstacles as they attempt to make this movie, but in the end, they make it. They show the finished movie to their older friend, Prunella, who has seen James Bond movies.

She tells them that their movie is not anything like a James Bond movie, but she loves their movie.
7. In "Francine Frensky, Olympic Rider", does Francine excel at horseback riding?

Answer: No

Francine dreams of riding a horse in the Olympics, so makes a deal with her parents that if she saves enough money for riding lessons, they'll take her to get riding lessons. She holds up her end of the bargain, but the lessons happen during the day when both of her parents are at work and they think she is too young to go to the barn by herself. They convince her teenage sister, Catherine, to take her to the barn by paying for Catherine's riding lessons.

While they are riding their bicycles to the barn, Catherine is not happy about taking her sister there and she is also not happy that their parents used their limited money for these riding lessons instead of buying her new clothes. Francine, on the other hand, is excited while they are riding there. Things change as soon as they arrive at the barn.

The riding instructor is a boy who is about Catherine's age. She quickly gets a crush on him and then she is excited about the riding lessons. Francine is eight and she's too young to have crushes on boys. Catherine excels at riding horse while Francine struggles. As the episode progresses, Francine's riding skills improve, but Catherine is always better at it.

At one point, the instructor has what is supposed to be a private conversation with Catherine. He tells her that if she takes care of the horses during the day, he will offer her some more lessons (more lessons than her parents can afford to pay for) for free. When she asks if this offer is also good for Francine, he says that it's not for Francine because the offer is only for the best riders. Francine overhears this private conversation and walks away.

Francine then quits her riding lessons one week early, clearly jealous that her older sister is the better rider. Francine decides to hang out with her friends, but none of them can decide what to do. D.W. suggests a game she that she made up that involves imaginary horses. This makes Francine regret quitting her lessons, so the next day, she goes to the barn. Initially, her plan is to not ride and to just watch her sister. Her sister comes up with a proposal: Francine will help her take care of the horses during the day and Catherine will give her a free riding lesson. At the end of the episode, the girls are back at home talking about saving money so they can buy their own horse in a few years. They end up arguing over what they will name the horse, which is a silly argument to have when they haven't even gotten the horse yet.
8. In "Buster Baxter Cat Saver", how does Buster save a cat from a tree?

Answer: The cat just jumps into his arms

Buster got Rocky Trout ice cream from Brain's mom's ice cream shop. He then walked by a tree with a cat stuck in it as the cat's owner called for help. The cat smelled Buster's ice cream (probably because it had trout in it and cats love to eat fish), went down the tree, jumped into Buster's arms, and ate his ice cream. The cat's owner tells Bitzi that Buster is a hero and Bitzi (who owns the newspaper) tells the newspaper to publish an article about him saving a cat. The story becomes well-known around the town and Buster becomes a local celebrity who gets followed by the press a lot.

At first, Buster tries to be modest and just speaks the truth by saying, "I was in the right place at the right time." However, people ask him for autographs and give him gifts and he even gets an ice cream named after it. He loves all of this, so then he changes his tune and becomes really conceited. He then tells people lies about how he saved the cat. He then starts demanding special privileges such as Brain doing all his homework and cuts in line at the movies. His friends try to tell him to stop acting this way, but he does not listen.

One day his friends have a meeting without him at the treehouse to talk about his behavior. Francine tells the other kids that she knows what really happened. She knows that Buster didn't really do anything amazing and the cat just jumped into his arms. This gives the kids an idea for a plan. Brain builds a robotic cat and places it in the same tree where Buster saved the real cat. Arthur and Francine ask Buster to save the cat as the press watches. Buster ends up admitting that he has no idea what to do because he didn't really do anything amazing the first time. A strong wind knocks the robotic cat out of the tree and it breaks. Buster realizes this was a trick to make him look bad and he confronts his friends about it. His friends told him that they did this because they were tired of him acting all selfish and conceited and they were tried of him lying about what he had done.

Buster realizes his mistake and apologizes, but then a piano comes right after the kids and Buster pushes them out of the way just in time. He becomes a hero all over again and he becomes conceited all over again.

The fact that Buster saved a cat is mentioned in a few other episodes. There is one episode where he saves another cat (Dr. Fugue's cat), which was also an accident.
9. In "Night Fright", what prevents Binky from having nightmares?

Answer: Night light

Binky has nightmares if he does not sleep with his night light on. In "Night Fright", he forgets to plug in his night light twice and we see two of his nightmares. For most of the episode, he does not want anyone outside his family to know that he sleeps with a night light because he is afraid he will get bullied for it.

The next morning before school, Mr. Ratburn overhears his students talking about things that scare them, so he decides to use his class time to get the kids to talk about things that scare them. The kids comes up with different things that scare them. Binky says that his only fear is that he will get so strong, the school will collapse when he slams the door. Mr. Ratburn thinks Binky is hiding something, but he does not pursue the truth.

After school it is raining. Most of the kids have gone home, but Arthur and Binky wait outside together for their parents. Arthur says that his parents are late because they are coming from his aunt Lucy's house. Binky's parents come, and they tell Arthur that the Reads had car trouble and they have to stay at Lucy's house, so he'll have to spend the night in the Barnes household in Binky's room. Arthur is okay with that but Binky is terrified that Arthur will discover that he sleeps with a night light and tell the rest of the class and they'll all make fun of him.

Arthur indeed discovers that Binky sleeps with a night light, but he does not care. Binky does not believe that Arthur does not care and he promises to do whatever. Arthur wants so he does not tell anyone about the night light. The next day in class, Mr. Ratburn asks the class what they do to reduce their fears. The kids all give their own answers. Eventually, Binky decides that he does not want to be Arthur's slave, so he tells the whole class that he sleeps with a night light. No one laughs at him. From then on, Binky continues to sleep with a night light and his sleep and his dreams improve.
10. In "Arthur vs. the Piano", he has a nightmare about making a mistake at his piano recital. When the recital actually happens, does he make a mistake?

Answer: Yes

For the piano recital, Arthur plans to play Beethoveen's "Fur Elise". He's rehearsed it plenty of times, but he's terrified that he will make a mistake. He even skips a rehearsal for this reason. Grandma Thora calms him down by saying that she will be in the audience and she loves hearing him play.

This gives Arthur the confidence he needs to do the song. He plays the song almost flawlessly, but then he plays a wrong note at the end. However, the only person who notices this is Binky (because Binky is in expert on all kinds of arts), and he thinks that Arthur did it on purpose to be like Thelonius Monk (a famous jazz pianist who has unusual ways of performing music) and he praises Arthur for it. Arthur is depressed about his performance and he cannot believe that no one noticed his mistake. Grandma Thora tells him that the audience just enjoys the music and they never hear mistakes.
11. In "The Big Blow Up", which two kids get in a feud with each other?

Answer: Brain and Francine

Brain and Francine are the two best soccer players in the region, and the Elwood City soccer team wins most of their games because of them. That changes in one practice. Arthur passes the ball to Francine, who is standing near the line. Brain tells Francine that she is out of bounds. Francine insists that she was in bounds and this causes an ongoing feud that lasts for most the episode. Arthur cannot help them honestly, because from his angle, he could not tell who was right and who was wrong. The feud continues for several days. During the next few games, Brain and Francine refuse to pass the ball to each other and they instead always pass to their less-skilled teammates. This causes the team to go on a losing streak.

Arthur and Buster try to come up with various ways to get Brain and Francine to resolve their differences. Most of them do not work. Meanwhile, D.W. wants Arthur to write a letter to Santa for her. When Arthur tells her to call Santa, she explains that a letter is better because then she can get her thoughts organized. This gives Buster and Arthur the idea to tell Brain and Francine to write letters of apology to each other. Brain and Francine give the letters to Buster and Arthur, who then are supposed to give the letters to Francine and Brain. However, when Buster and Arthur read the letters, they see that the apologies are not sincere and they do not give Francine and Brain their actual apology letters. Instead, Arthur re-writes Francine's letter and Buster rewrites Brain's. Francine accepts "Brain's" apology but cannot believe the spelling mistakes in a letter that supposedly came from the smartest kid in school. "Francine's" letter is written on the back of D.W.'s letter to Santa. Brain initially reads the wrong side and rejects the apology, but Arthur turns the letter around and Brain accepts it. They make up and work together again and win their final game and get in the playoffs. After the game is over, Francine and Brain soon discover that Arthur and Buster were the ones who wrote "their" letters. In the end, Francine says that she and Brain are no longer mad at each other and now they are mad at Arthur and Buster.
12. In "Lost!", who gets lost?

Answer: Arthur

At the beginning of the episode, the Read house gets a call saying that Arthur is lost and he never made it to his swim lesson. After the title card, he returns home. Most of the rest of the episode is him telling his parents the story of how he got lost and how he came home. He feel asleep on the bus and missed his stop. When he finally woke up, he was at the last stop on the edge of town, way past the swimming pool. He was horrified. He could not walk home because it was too far and he didn't know the way, and he did not have enough money to take the bus home.

He tries to use a pay phone in a diner but it does not work. The waitress at the diner was on the bus with him and she recognizes him. He explains his predicament to her. She offers to lend him money so he can get home, but he says that his father told him never to take money from strangers. She then suggests that Arthur talk to the bus driver. She tells him that the bus driver is friendly and will help him out. She also gives him a free meal of a burger, French fries, and a milkshake. When the bus comes again, Arthur explains his predicament to the bus driver. The bus driver gives him a ride home for free and he calls the parents to let them know that Arthur is coming home. After Arthur concludes his story, his parents tell him that they are happy that he is okay and they are proud of him for asking for help.
13. In "D.W.'s Deer Friend", what does she name the deer?

Answer: Walter

When the family goes on a weekend trip, D.W. gets to pick where they go. She chooses to go camping. Her parents are proud that their decision to limit D.W.'s TV time to educational channels taught her not to just repeat what the TV says ... until they see that the TV gave her the idea to go camping. They still do it.

During the camping trip, she sees a deer near the tent. She runs out to it, but it runs away. Her mother explains to her that deer get spooked easily. She then waits a long time for the deer to return and has fantasies about what her life will be like with the deer. When the deer returns, D.W. gets a box of cereal which she intends to feed to the deer, but her father forbids that and tells her that all she is allowed to do is look at the deer. Her father explains that the forest is the deer's home and she asks if D.W. would want to be fed strange food in the Read house. D.W. says that it'd be fine if a deer did it (she's four and she's not very smart).

After having some crazy fantasies about what her life will be like if she brings the deer home, she tells her family that's what she is going to do. When her parents forbid this, she runs off crying. Her mother explains that she'd be taking the deer away from her family and she does not think D.W. would want to be taken away from her family. D.W. then fantasizes that the deer can talk and cry, and she fantasizes about the deer crying in the Read house because he misses his family and telling D.W. that she just took him away from them without asking. D.W. decides that her mother is right. She takes one last look at the deer right before the family heads home.

At the end of the episode, it is revealed that Walter and his father can talk. Walter tells his father that a girl watched him from behind the bushes for the entire weekend. He says that he wanted to invite D.W. to live with his family. His father explains that D.W. would not fit in with his family. He explains that humans never stay in the forest very long and that they live in "metal rolling things." Apparently, Walter's father thinks that people live in cars.
14. In "Buster Hits the Books", what is the first book that Buster reads and finishes?

Answer: Robin Hood

When it is time for the kids to hand in their book report to Mr. Ratburn, Arthur is unhappy to learn that Buster did his report from a movie. Buster explains that every book report he ever turned in was from a movie because he thinks that all movies come from books. Arthur tells Buster that they don't, which horrifies Buster. The boys go to the library to ask the librarian if there is a book version of the movie that Buster's report is on, and she tells them that there isn't. Buster explains his mistake to Mr. Ratburn, who tells him that if he does a book report on a real book by the end of the week, he will not fail.

At lunch, Buster horrifies his friends by telling them that he has never read a book and finished it. Over the next few days, they try to get him to read a few easy books, but Buster never makes it very far before giving up. Eventually, Arthur gets two books for Buster, one of which is called "Blue" and the other one is "Robin Hood". Arthur got "Blue" for him because it is the easiest book he can find. Arthur explains to Buster that if he reads enough easy books, he will eventually earn the right to read "Robin Hood". Buster starts off trying to read "Blue" but the book is WAY too simple for an eight-year-old. Instead, he reads "Robin Hood". He does his book report on "Robin Hood", turns it in, and gets a passing grade. When Arthur asks Buster how he could read "Robin Hood" if he could not read all of the simpler books that his friends tried to get him to read, Buster explains that he did not like any of those books. The moral of the episode is that it's much easier to read when you enjoy what you're reading.
15. In "Arthur's Knee", who helps D.W. convince Arthur to tell his mom what happened to his knee?

Answer: Brain

The school is doing the Shakespeare play "Julius Caesar" and Brain and Arthur have to build the chariot for the play. The chariot does not work because one of the wheels is bad. Arthur decides to get one. When D.W. asks Arthur where he is going, Arthur explains that he is going to the dump to get a new wheel. Arthur is not allowed to go to the dump by himself, so D.W. threatens to tell their parents if he does not invite her to go with him. So he invites her to go with him. He climbs into the dump and gets a wheel from a bicycle. As he climbs back up, he cuts his knee and accidentally tosses the wheel back into the dump.

Arthur tells D.W. not to tell her parents. She agrees to keep his secret but she does not feel that is the right thing to do. Nadine convinces D.W. to try to get Arthur to tell on himself. As D.W. tries to think of a way she can do that, Brain comes to Arthur's house. D.W. tells Brain what happened and asks him to look at Arthur's knee. D.W. explains that Arthur's knee might get worse if she does not tell his mother. Brain agrees with D.W. and elaborates on all the diseases that Arthur could get from germs going into his body through his cut. Finally, Arthur tells his mother what happened and she takes him to the doctor. The doctor takes care of Arthur's knee, gives him a tetanus booster, and gives him some antibiotics to take for the next 10 days to be sure he does not get sick.

On the way home, Jane tells Arthur that she is proud of him for telling the truth. After Arthur gets out of the car, she stops him to talk with him some more. At the end of the episode, Arthur's friend invite him to play ball. He tells them that he is going to stay home and do chores because he feels guilty about going to the dump behind his parents' back and waiting longer than he should have to tell them about his knee. Just as Sue Ellen is about to praise Arthur for his maturity, D.W. comes out and reveals that Arthur is grounded. His friends walk away laughing.
