Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These African animals, as a colony, build huge mounds of dirt in which they live. A colony actually contains millions of individual animals. What could these tiny animals be?

Answer: Termites

There are over 1000 species of termite in Africa. You can see miles of the large and quite dramatic looking mounds all over the African plains.
2. These animals have sharp, needle-like teeth through which a toxin is expressed. They are smooth bodied, long and lean, with heads covered in shields. They can come in colors from white to black and all colors and patterns in between. What is the common name of this dark eyed beauty?

Answer: Snakes

Most of these animals belong to the family Elapidae. There are many species of cobras and vipers on the African continent. Both types of snakes deliver their venom from fangs on the back of the top jaw. The exception is the King Cobra who has developed an additional talent for spitting their venom - they are the only type of snake in Africa who can do this.
3. Oh no, there is a group of birds, mostly black, with fluffy down on their heads instead of feathers. They have huge beaks and talons. They are feeding on the body of some other animal who was most likely killed the night before. What type of scavenger bird am I seeing?

Answer: Vulture

There are several species of scavenger birds in Africa. The hawks, herons and buzzards all fit the requirements. Hawks are much smaller than vultures, however their wings are so large they almost look the same size. Buzzards look more like a hawk. Both buzzards and hawks also kill their own food along with being scavengers.
4. I've always thought of this next animal as the tallest animal but my guide refers to them as one of the even-toed ungulates. This stately animal is light brown with darker brown patches. They have legs like stilts, long necks and a tiny looking head which grazes at the treetop. What is this stretched animal called?

Answer: Giraffe

It's interesting that the giraffe would share a family trait with animals like the hippo and warthog. These animals are low to the ground but they are also plant eaters. The family association is strictly counting the number of toes they have. Any even number, such as two, four or six-toed creatures would all be part of this group.
5. I asked our guide that if there are even-toed ungulates, are there odd-toed ungulates? I thought I was being funny but he said yes! I look and see a horse. Well, I thought it was a horse. With a closer look I see stripes. They had a short bushy mane and travel in herds. What is this snappy dresser's name?

Answer: Zebra

Zebras are in the same family of odd-toed undulates with the African wild ass and both black and white rhinos. The stripes on a zebra are as individual as fingerprints. They can have black or less frequently-seen brown stripes.
6. I can't help but notice the next animal looks like a soldier, dressed for battle. He is covered with scales and is mostly a dusty brown color to blend with the environment. They can protect themselves with a smelly oil they can emit if threatened. What is this well protected animal?

Answer: Pangolin

The pangolin is a relative of the anteater. They have long noses and tails and they hunt by putting their noses into ant and termite hills. Their scales are made of keratin which is the same material human fingernails and toenails are made of. They can roll into a scaly ball when they are threatened. They are as adept in the trees as they are on the ground.
7. Next is a herd of the most beautiful, delicate looking creatures. They have pointy horns and are mostly gray/brown with white undersides. They have short, fluffy tails and long, slender legs. They look so dainty until they flee like the wind. What are these surprisingly fast, yet delicate animals called? (Hint: think tennis shoe brand)

Answer: Rhebok

The family of modern bovids are large in number in Africa. They are African buffalo, gazelle, hartebeast and several others. They are all pack animals that graze on the tundra and have an elaborate scatter technique to avoid being caught by the carnivores.
8. The largest animal in Africa is the African bush elephant. They can be up to 13 feet tall and weigh up to 12,000 pounds. African elephants have been hunted for their tusks for centuries. But who wears the tusks in the family?

Answer: Both males and females have tusks

There are both African bush elephants and African forest elephants. The forest elephants are a bit smaller but they are still the same species. There are also Asian elephants but they have a different body structure. The ivory tusks of the elephant have been treasured by hunters for centuries, having uses in art, medicine and black market trading.
9. This next animal is usually found near the water. They use the water to cool their very large bodies. They also emit an oil that coats their bodies to keep their skin from burning. They are considered the most dangerous mammal in Africa and you don't want to confuse their large cumbersome size with slowness. What is the name of this large animal?

Answer: Hippopotamus

The name hippopotamus comes from the Greek language for "river horse". They are mostly plant eaters and their closest living relatives are the whales and porpoises. They are nearly hairless and have short stubby legs but they move with amazing speed. Like elephants, they are also hunted for their ivory teeth.
10. Upon returning to the lodge, our guide tells us of a few animals we didn't get a chance to see. Due to the arid nature of our locale, we didn't see any primates. What is the largest ape the guide would have told us about?

Answer: Western Gorilla

There are two species of African gorillas. They are the western and eastern gorillas, depending where they are found in the country. They live in the more humid climates of Africa. There are many other species of apes and monkeys in Africa including the baboons, colobuses, macaques and chimpanzees.
