Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What color was the title rose in the 1985 movie in which Mia Farrow played a New Jersey housewife escaping her abusive marriage by rewatching the same movie over and over? It was directed by the man she was living with at the time, who later married her adopted daughter.

Answer: Purple

"The Purple Rose of Cairo" was the fictional film Ms. Farrow watched in the movie with that title. One of the characters from the fictional film steps off the screen and they begin a relationship which helps her leave her husband. The movie was directed by Woody Allen; Farrow and Allen were in a long relationship and co-adopted children. Allen later married Soon-Yi Previn, Farrow's daughter adopted during her marriage to Andre Previn. Fodder for messy tabloid stories, no one's reputation escaped the incident unscathed.
2. What country serves as the primary setting for Eco's novel "The Name of the Rose"?

Answer: Italy

The novel was Umberto Eco's debut, published in 1980. The plot involves a murder mystery in a Northern Italy abbey, interspersed with the historical intrigues of the Church and the Holy Roman Empire as well as religious disputes. The book was a bestseller, and has been adapted in multiple media including a film starring Sean Connery, a television miniseries and a radio drama.
3. Which romantic tearjerker movie includes a character named Rose DeWitt Bukater? You may get a sinking feeling if you can't remember.

Answer: Titanic

Rose appears as a seventeen year old who falls in love with lower class passenger Jack Dawson, and also as her 100-year old self recounting the tale to treasure hunters. Young Rose was played by Kate Winslett and Gloria Stuart portrayed the older stage. Spoiler alert: the ship sinks.
4. Which athlete was also known as "Charlie Hustle"?

Answer: Pete Rose

The origin of the nickname is unclear, and it has been variably attributed. Rose ran aggressively to the base even when walked, so sometimes it was sarcastic, whereas other times it was used to praise his hard work on the field. Rose was banned from baseball after being caught gambling on the game. Rosey Grier played football for the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams in the 1950s and 60s, and later in life became a Protestant minister.

He was working as a bodyguard when Robert Kennedy was assassinated, and managed to subdue Sirhan Sirhan. Both Derrick and Jalen Rose, who are not related, played basketball in the NBA.
5. What was the theme of the 1964 semi-autobiographical novel, "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden"?

Answer: Mental illness

The book was written by Hannah Green, which is a pseudonym for Joanne Greenberg. The novel recounts her treatment for schizophrenia at a Maryland psychiatric hospital (loosely disguised Chestnut Lodge in Rockville). As definitions of mental disorders have become more discriminating, it is unlikely that she would carry that diagnosis today.
6. If a person is described as seeing life through "rose-colored glasses," what type of outlook do they have?

Answer: Optimistic

Seeing through rose-colored glasses implies a cheerful optimism that is blind to the negatives in any given situation. This may refer to the present, but also a positive bias toward the past. The phrase has been used since at least the 1830s. Songs and albums have been recorded with this title.
7. The television show "The Golden Girls" had a great ensemble cast. Which star portrayed the character Rose Nylund?

Answer: Betty White

All of the suggested answers were members of "The Golden Girls" cast, and all four won Emmys for their portrayal. Betty White, as Rose, is a widow who moves into the home in Miami owned by another widow, Blanche Devereaux (McLanahan). They are joined by Dorothy (Bea Arthur) and her wise-cracking mother (Getty).

The show aired from 1985-1982, and was succeeded by a spinoff, "The Golden Palace."
8. Robots are common characters in television animation. Which show features a robot named Rosey?

Answer: The Jetsons

Rosie or Rosey (spelled alternately in different season) was the Jetson's maid. Despite being a mechanical being, she wears the accoutrements of a French maid with frilly apron and cap. The original animated show aired in prime time beginning in 1962 but quickly moved to the Saturday morning lineup.

The other suggested options also include robots; Bender in "Futurama," GIR in "Invader Zim" and Jimmy Neutron's robot dog, Goddard.
9. The cultural icon, Rosie the Riveter, symbolizes women in the workforce, especially in trades traditionally considered "a man's job". Which familiar recurring advertising character is thought to be inspired by Rosie the Riveter?

Answer: Josephine for Comet

Josephine in the Comet ads was a plumber, a trade typically thought of as a "man's job." Rosie the Riveter appeared on a series of posters encouraging women to take on jobs needed for the war effort during World War II. After the war, however, most of these women were displaced by men returning home.

Some historians believe that this helped inspire some aspects of the women's movement as former "Rosies" missed the independence they had while working better paying jobs.
10. A famous burlesque performer was Gypsy Rose Lee, immortalized in the Broadway musical "Gypsy." Which of the three names by which she is best known was actually given to her at birth?

Answer: Rose

Her name at birth was Rose Louise Hovick; her family called her Louise. Her sister June's stage name adapted their last name, changing Hovick to Havoc. As Gypsy Rose Lee, Louise became a star at Minsky's Burlesque, known for her wit and more "teasing" striptease. Of note, her mother was also named Rose, and the title of this quiz, "Everything's Coming Up Roses" is a song sung by that character in the Broadway show, "Gypsy."
