Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Moonshine, white lightning, and mountain dew are all names for what?

Answer: Illegally distilled whiskey

Scots-Irish immigrants brought the art of distilling whiskey to what is now the Appalachian region of the United States in the 17th century. Their product was known by many names, but the most popular was "moonshine," a word that most likely derives from the fact that it was produced at night, when smoke from the fires that heated the stills would be less visible. Real moonshine is made from corn (maize), is clear in color, is not aged, and has a very high alcohol content.

The production of moonshine burgeoned during Prohibition, when commercially produced and imported whiskey became difficult to obtain and very expensive.
