Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We have allowed each player a few minutes on the practice green with an easy question as a warm up. Remember, each player is limited to 10 minutes only in this area so please be considerate. What golfing miscellany became widely visible on or attached to golf courses in 1927?

Answer: Miniature golf courses

There were an unnoticed couple of these courses a little earlier but the first one to become popular came from Garnet Carter at Lookout Mountain in Tennessee. His idea was to draw attention to his hotel and full-length regulation golf course where his mini course appeared. People loved it! So much so that soon the grass on which it was played was trampled and destroyed, causing the wily Mr. Carter to secure rights to a vegetable fiber surfacing that was much more durable. By 1930 there were were over 25 million happy mini-duffers running around and Garnet Carter was quite rich and happy, even though his new recreation's popularity far exceeded that of his hotel or regular course. This question was written by Gatsby722.
2. The first hole is set amongst the course's famous old oaks with just two small bunkers on the shoulder of the green. A long drive keeping to the right should set you up nicely for this par 4 hole. Which American author, noted for his trenchant observations, once famously described golf as "...a beautiful walk spoiled by a small white ball"?

Answer: Mark Twain

This is perhaps the best-known witticism concerning golf, though I think the following are just as witty:
"I consider golf to be an expensive way of playing marbles." (G.K. Chesterton)
"Golf is like chasing a quinine pill around a cow pasture." (Winston Churchill)
"The uglier a man's legs are, the better he plays golf; it's almost a law." (H.G.Wells)
"Give me the fresh air, a beautiful partner, and a nice round of golf, and you can keep the fresh air and the round of golf." (Jack Benny)
This question was written by Jouen58.
3. This is an easier par 3. A straight drive to the pin should give you a simple putt. Please note - the hole has been cut to the rear left of the green today. You may know that golf was a "male only" sport for many years, but is it true the word "golf" is actually an acronym for "gentlemen only ladies forbidden"?

Answer: No

Golf is not an acronym. The "gentleman only ladies forbidden" is an old "husbands" tale and has been around for a long time. According to the online Golf Digest, the name stems from a medieval Dutch word "kolf" which meant "club". This was passed onto the Scots who transformed the word to "golve". By the mid 16th century the word "golf" had taken shape.
This question was written by Bertho.
4. Another par 3, but this time course officials have asked me to issue a warning to all players. A stray dog has been interrupting play on this hole. All efforts to catch him have failed. Course officials will consider invoking no penalty should a golf ball go astray in this manner. Which of the following is the odd one out (in that the others are all linked to golf)?

Answer: Cherokee

Golf, Polo, Passat and Beetle are all makes of Volkswagen car, whereas the Cherokee is a Jeep. Some interesting background information for you:

1. By coincidence, Golf, Polo and Beetle are also all well-known games. I don't know what a Passat is, but it could easily be a game as well.

2. Volkswagen means literally "Car of the People", but that doesn't mean that people are just allowed to steal them, as I've found to my cost.

3. The Cherokee is named after one of the five Native American "Civilised Tribes" (the others being Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole).

4. Some of the aforementioned tribes were immortalised in the Tim McGraw song "Indian Outlaw", which contains the following verse:

"You can find me in my wigwam
I'll be beatin' on my tom-tom
Pull out the pipe and smoke you some
Hey and pass it around"

5. Tim McGraw was strangely omitted from the latest nominations for UN Goodwill Ambassador.
This question was written by Islingtonian.
5. The fourth hole has been inconsistent. Slated as a par 4 it has been causing some players trouble with the newly added stand of trees halfway down the fairway on the right. When Australia's Royal Perth Golf Club was in its infancy, which of the following events took place?

Answer: All of these events took place.

In the early years of the 20th century when the club opened on its present site it had only nine holes. The course consisted of large tracts of sand, making the use of red balls most advisable. Sheep were brought in to keep the grass down after play had finished, however they often escaped during the day to share the fairways with the players. The caretaker's chickens were also known to cause disruptions.
This question was written by Nannanut.
6. Another par 3. This hole carries a cash bonus for a hole in one. Today's play has resulted in a number of birdies but the prize is proving elusive thus far. Which of the following movies does not deal with golf or have a golf scene?

Answer: Bye Bye Birdie

"Follow The Sun" was a biopic concerning the famed golfer Ben Hogan. It starred Glenn Ford. "Pat and Mike", starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, told the story of a woman, a natural athlete, who strives to win a golf championship despite her fiancé's objections. Tracy plays Mike, a sports manager with a shady past, who encourages her and ultimately wins her heart. "Goldfinger" stars Sean Connery as James Bond and Gert Fröbe as the nefarious Goldfinger.

There is a famous scene in the movie where they play a high stakes golf match and Bond beats the cheating Goldfinger at his own game. "Bye Bye Birdie" was adapted from a Broadway play dealing with a rock and roll singer's final TV performance before he joins the army and had nothing to do with golf.

It starred Janet Leigh, Dick Van Dyke and Ann-Margret. This question was written by Maddogrick16
7. This par 4 hole has posed some problems for the field. A small water hazard just out of sight near the dogleg is catching some players unaware. The city of St Andrews in Scotland is known for being the "Home of Golf" and has a 600 year-old history of the game. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club was formed there in 1754 and is the governing body for the golf rules for the entire world.

Answer: False

The Royal and Ancient only governs everywhere but the United States and Mexico which are under the auspices of the USGA. They do work together to ensure that the game is played and judged in a similar fashion. Fortunately for golf, the war between the golfers and the people wishing to raise rabbits on the Old Course was a triumph for golf.
This question was written by Bruyere.
8. A par 4 hole with a few surprises. The series of bunkers along the left of the fairway is causing players concern especially with the gusting winds we have been experiencing. The character of Jordan Baker in the book "The Great Gatsby" is a widely known golfer who is infamous because she cheated to win her first golf tournament. Which character in the "The Great Gatsby" did Jordan share a love interest with?

Answer: Nick Carraway

Jordan Baker showed interest in Nick Carraway, who had mutual feelings. In the end, Nick broke off the relationship to deal with loose ends in his life. F. Scott Fitzgerald took Jordan Baker's character's name from the famous advertisement of the Jordan automobile, which was advertised as representing freedom, excitement, and romanticism.

Another popular source of the character is Josephine Baker, a dancer during the 1920s. They were both said to be free-spirited and outspoken. It is likely that Fitzgerald incorporated both of these aspects to create the character of Jordan Baker.

She was the embodiment of the free-spirited and sexually adventurous woman of the 1920s. This question was written by Trident87.
9. This eighth hole is a par 5. The narrow outlook from the tee does not provide players with a clear view of this difficult dogleg hole. A straight drive to the left of the fairway will set you up for the second shot. Your unscrupulous friend disappears into a deep sand trap in which his golf ball has landed. You are unable to see how he manages it, but his ball comes up, out of the trap and rolls to within inches of the hole. As he exits the trap you would swear that he was not even carrying a club! Which of the following did he most likely use to get his ball out of the sand trap?

Answer: A hand mashie

"Hand mashie" is a term that describes the important duffer's "club" of choice that consists of one's own right arm, hand, four fingers and a thumb. The "cleek", "spoon" and "mashie niblick" were wooden shafted clubs of old that are approximated by today's one iron, three wood and seven iron, respectively. "Hand mashies" are also ideal for improving one's lie and enterprising duffers generally employ them for that purpose without even counting it as a stroke.

10. The halfway mark in the tournament. This par 4 will head you back towards the clubhouse. The three sand traps at the base of the green have been causing difficulties today. What was the original game titled, back in 1990?

Answer: Links: The Challenge of Golf

The "Links" series was first released in 1990 as a DOS based game and was an instant phenomenon for home hackers. A few years later the engine was improved. "Links 386 Pro" continued the little dimpled ball rolling for Access and 13 separate add-on championship golf courses gave the publisher its place in video game history. Microsoft "acquired" Access Software around 1999, and although the golf simulation market now had stiff opposition like EA Sports "Tiger Woods PGA", Microsoft ensured that the "Links" series still remained at the top of its genre through upgrades and expansion to consoles like X-Box and Playstation 2. This question was written by Bertho.
11. A tricky par 5 to start players on the homeward run. The flowering shrubs surrounding the tee are causing some concern with an early summer swarm of bees in one of the branches. No players have been stung as yet but please proceed with caution. Who was the only French golfer to win the British Open in the 20th century?

Answer: Arnaud Massy

Arnaud Massy was France's most successful golfer of the 20th century. Apart from his win in the British Open in 1907 he also won the Belgian, French and Spanish Open Golf Tournaments. He won his first title in 1906 in a long career that culminated in back to back Spanish Open titles in 1927/28.

12. A difficult par 3. Very few birdies have been scored on this hole today. The hole placement on what is proving to be a very slippery green seems to be causing concern for the majority of players. The typical cartoon of a golfer sports a "Tam O'-Shanter" on his head. This distinctive headgear with its pompom on it has even given its name to several golf courses in the USA. To which author do we owe the name of the hat that symbolizes golf so well?

Answer: Robert Burns

"Tam O' Shanter" was a poem by Robert Burns (1759-1796) about a farmer's misadventures and the name was given to the hat. There are at least ten US States that have Tam O' Shanter golf courses.
This question was written by Bruyere.
13. The 12th hole is a very forgiving par 4 with the largest number of birdies for the course being scored here today. As long as players start out to the right there should be no problems. The British Open is the world's oldest major golf tournament. At which course in Ayrshire were the first twelve British Opens held?

Answer: Prestwick

The Open was held at Prestwick from 1860 to 1872 (there was no tournament in 1871). Twelve further Opens were held there, the last being in 1925. Although it is no longer regarded as up to championship standard, the old course is still there, between the railway and the coast, and continues to attract golfers, especially those with an interest in the sport's history.

14. A very challenging par 5 for this hole. A high number of players have lost balls in the lake and thus dropped a shot. Gusty winds are predicted which will probably result in even more bogies. The caddies proceed to violate many accepted rules of decorum until they are frightened from the pool by an everyday object presented in a fearsome context. What is this misunderstood icon of loathsomeness?

Answer: A "Baby Ruth" candy bar

This scene is very much in keeping with the film's original premise of misbehaving caddies wreaking havoc among the upper crust. While making the film, however, director Harold Ramis realized that art would be better served by focusing on his more mature stars, such as comedians Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Ted Knight. To make better use of these performers' talents, Ramis filmed several improvised scenes, many of which, including Murray's soliloquy on being a "Cinderella story about to become the Masters champion", are among the most beloved comedic scenes of the era. 15. This hole is a par 4. It is described as a dogleg, having a sharp bend to the left some 150 yards up the narrow fairway. You need to drive from the tee to the bend point in order to get a good view of the spacious green. Golf is not exclusively a man's game. There are many women playing excellent golf in tournaments around the world. Which of these is a competition for teams of amateur women golfers from the USA and UK?

Answer: Curtis Cup

The Curtis Cup competition is played alternately in the USA and UK on even numbered years. The trophy for the competition was donated by British golfing sisters Harriot and Margaret Curtis. The inaugural tournament was played at the UK's Wentworth Golf Club in 1932. Women are selected for the Curtis Cup teams by the US Golf Association and the UK Ladies' Golf Union.

16. Another par 3 for the 15th hole. This hole has played very well today and has given some relief to players. An easy drive straight to the pin which is cut right in the middle of the green. Indeed, golf is a game that involves "spanking a Spalding" around the links, but golf is also the name of a card game. Which kind of card game is it?

Answer: A solitaire (patience) game

Golf is a type of solitaire (or patience for UK quiz takers). Here's how you play:

"Lay out seven tableaus fanned down, each with five face-up cards. Above them place a single face-up card to start the wastepile, which will fan right during the game. Keep the rest of the deck in your hand.

The goal is to move as many cards as possible from the tableau into the wastepile. Top cards are available for moving to the wastepile, building up or down by rank. Building is not circular, and furthermore nothing may be built on a King. Cards are never moved among the tableaus.

Deal by playing a single card from your hand onto the wastepile whenever you want.

Because this is a hard game to win, many people "play for par." Count each game as a "hole," and the number of cards left in the tableau at the end as the number of "strokes" you took to play the hole. Each hole is par 4, so par for nine holes is 36." Rules courtesy of Semicolon Software.

17. A straightforward par 4 with few surprises. As long as the first shot stays right, players should avoid the bunker easily. Some overhanging branches on the left hand approach to the green have caused a few problems so try to keep to the right. It's an age old question. How many dimples does a golf ball have? "Many" is an easy answer but there is more to note about them than that. How many dimples should the ball have for peak performance?

Answer: 350 - 450

Some 100 years ago golfers used balls that were smooth. As they got chipped and such they noticed something. They travelled higher and farther as a result! Thus became dimples. Tiger Woods is quite demanding where these dimples are concerned. 382 - no more and no less. Counting them seems to work well for him!

18. A par 3 with just one little catch. The television tower is proving a distraction for players as it seems to be interfering with a clear view of the hole. Keeping to the left with your drive seems to be proving effective. In one hilarious episode of "The Honeymooners", Ed Norton is teaching Ralph Kramden how to play golf, using an instruction manual. The first step, according to the book, is to address the ball. What does Norton do?

Answer: He says "Hello ball".

"The Golfer" was originally aired on October 15, 1955. In this episode, Ralph brags to his boss that he's a highly skilled golfer. His boss asks him to play, and "Blabbermouth" Ralph is forced to learn to play golf in three days.

19. The final hole and a fairly straightforward par 4 to the clubhouse. Crowd interest in this tournament has been high and the stands are packed. Good luck on your final hole. Of the following countries, which was the first to establish a registered golf club?

Answer: India

The Calcutta Golf Club was established in 1829 and was the first golf club established in the world outside of Britain. The first golf club in Australia was established in 1870, the (Royal) Adelaide Golf Club. In 1873, the (Royal) Montreal Golf Club was established in Canada.

The first golf course to be established in the U.S. was the Oakhurst Golf Club in White Sulpher Springs, Virginia in 1884. It did not survive. The oldest golf club in the States to exist on a continuous basis is Shinnecock Hills Golf Club established in 1891 on Long Island, New York. This question was written by Maddogrick16.
