The idiom stems from the days where the purple color was reserved for royalty, due to the high cost of producing purple dye back in that time. Hence, any child born into a royal family was "born in the purple".

The expression has expanded in modern times to cover any children born into a high-ranking family. Note that it doesn't apply to children born from parents that would become prominent later in the life, as those children were born when the family was not yet "in the purple".

This question was harder to create than I expected! There are a lot of "purple" related songs, some of them quite obscure. In this case, the options selected were "Purple Haze" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, "Purple Stain" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and "Purple Rain" by Prince.

However, there is no song called "Purple Smoke". One might be tricked into thinking about one of the most recognizable rock songs, "Smoke on the Water", by Deep Purple, but it doesn't fit the criteria.

Yoshi is the only one of all the characters listed that does not fit this quiz. He's the lovable green sidekick of Super Mario, first introduced in "Super Mario World" (1995). He has the ability to eat some of Mario's enemies, and stomp on them with a lot more force than Mario alone. He can also be found in other colors, which will give him special abilities when holding a turtle shell in his mouth: red will make him spit fire, blue will let him fly for a brief period of time, and yellow will cause the ground to shake whenever he jumps, knocking nearby enemies down.

The other three are all purple colored. Barney barely needs an introduction; Dino is the house pet from "The Flintstones"; and Chomper is a young Tyrannosaurus from the "The Land Before Time" movie franchise.

Highly prized in jewelry, amethyst is a violet variety of quartz, owing its color to iron irradiation and other transition metals.

The word has its origins on Ancient Greek "ametrystos" ("not intoxicated"), as it was believed that it protected from drunkenness. In fact, wine vessels were often carved from this stone.

While it has a high hardness, it should still be handled with care, particularly when exposing it to heat or strong light, which can alter its color.

Though also consumed in the southern region of Peru, and in the northwest of Argentina, Api Morado (meaning "Purple Api") is prepared by soaking the corn flour in about 6 cups of water. At the same time, you should boil 9 more cups of water with cinnamon and cloves for flavoring. Mix the two preparations, add orange rind and sugar, and stir until it thickens.

Api can also be made in a "white" version, by using normal corn flour instead of the purple variety. It is traditionally served with "bunuelos", deep fried pastries that are also a staple in the Andean breakfast.

Answer: Aquamarine

Even if you're not familiar with the specific names of the hues for each color, the name of the wrong option gives itself away. At least, I never saw a sea with purple water!

Aquamarine is a light blue color, with a slight touch of green. It is named after the gemstone of the same name, and derives from "sea water" in Latin.

The movie was a departure from Spielberg's previous style - up to that point, his films have all been largely based on action or fantastic themes. It received mixed reviews, but was still a commercial success. However, together with "The Turning Point" (1977), it holds a curious, unwanted record: it was nominated to 11 Academy Awards without winning any.

Three of those nominations went to Whoopi Goldberg, for Best Actress (on her breakthrough role), and Margaret Avery and Oprah Winfrey for Supporting Actress (it was Winfrey's film debut). Elizabeth Taylor was not part of the cast, although she fits in with the theme of the quiz - she had very rare purple eyes.

His first appearance in the comics was actually in the role of a villain, but eventually he joined the Avengers, being one of the main members for a long period. He wears a purple mask and a mostly purple colored outfit. He's renowned for his exceptional ability with the bow and arrow.

Answer: Donald Duck's nephews

The mischievous trio of Huey, Dewey and Louie can be distinguished by the color of their caps, and sometimes their shirts. Huey wears red, Dewey blue, and Louie green. While they sometimes swap colors, they never use purple.

As for the rest of the groups, The Backyardigans feature Austin, a purple kangaroo; The Teletubbies have Tinky Winky as their purple member; and the Turtles have Donatello using a purple mask.
