Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Here are the countries that lie entirely south of the equator, alongside their northernmost point and latitude:

In South America, Argentina's northernmost point is the confluence between Grande de San Juan and Mojinete rivers, Jujuy Province at 21°48′S. The southernmost point is on the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, around 55° South latitude.

Burundi, whose northernmost point is Colline Kigali at 02°18′S, and southernmost point is Colline Chibumba, near Mugina (4°28' S) is also entirely south of the equator as well as entirely in the Eastern Hemisphere, located in East Africa, within the Great Lakes region.

East Timor (aka Timor Leste), it is the only country in Asia that is completely located south of the equator. Its northernmost point is Ponta de Acrema, Atauro Island at 08°7′S. The southern coast of East Timor faces the Timor Sea, which separates East Timor from Australia.

Fiji's northernmost point, Elsee, Rotuma, a self-governing dependency, is located about 400 km (250 miles) to the north of the main islands but is still situated around at 12°30′S. Fiji is part of the Melanesia region in Oceania described by the Fijian High Commission, as lying "midway between the Equator and the South Pole." Fiji's southernmost land point is Ceva-i-Ra, aka Conway Reef, an uninhabited coral atoll located at about 21° 44′ South latitude.

Landlocked within southern Africa, Lesotho is completely surrounded on all borders by South Africa, aka The Republic of South Africa. Lesotho's northernmost point is Monantsa at 28°34′S, and its geographic center at 29°30' S, 28°30' E. It is entirely south of the equator and is entirely in the Eastern Hemisphere. Lesotho is the only independent country in the world whose entire territory is higher than 1,000 meters above sea level.

All of the islands and territories of Mauritius are located in the Southern Hemisphere. This island nation is located in the Indian Ocean and is considered part of Africa. Its northernmost point is Tappe a Terre, Agaléga Islands at 10°25′S. Its southernmost point is on the main island, in the region of Le Gris Gris, Savanne District.

New Zealand is entirely south of the equator, located in the South Pacific Ocean, and its northernmost point is Nugent Island at 29°13′S in the Kermadec Islands. With a geographic center at approximately 42°S 174°E, New Zealand is often described as a point of reference as lying about halfway between the equator and the South Pole.

Located in south-central South America, Paraguay's northernmost point is San Antonio, bordering Bolivia at 19°17′S. Paraguay is another landlocked country, bordered, in addition to Bolivia, by Brazil, and Argentina. Its southernmost point is the fluvial island of Yacyretá, at a latitude of 27°43' S, located in the Paraná River, right on the border between Paraguay and Argentina. Paraguay's southern tip reaches much closer to the Antarctic Circle than its northern point does to the equator.

Rwanda lies between latitudes 1°03' S and 2°51' S, with its northernmost point being the city of Kagitumba, at 01°03′S. Kagitumba is the exact point where Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda diverge at the confluence of the Kagitumba and Akagera rivers.

Situated in East Africa, Tanzania is situated entirely within the Southern Hemisphere, with its northernmost point being the Kagera River, southwest of Burumba at 00°59′S. Bukoba, on the western shore of Lake Victoria, is just under 1 degree south of the equator, so it's a close shave. Tanzania's southernmost latitude is 11° 45' S.

Tuvalu consists of three reef islands and six coral atolls spread over a large area of the Pacific Ocean. This island nation's northernmost point is Lakena, Nanumea at 05°39′S, and its southernmost point is Niulakita island, at about 10°48′S.

And now these countries are not entirely south of the equator:

Bangladesh, in South Asia, just east of India, lies entirely north of the equator, with a latitude range of approximately 20°34' North and 26°38' North.

The country Ghana in Africa is entirely north of the equator, between about 4.5° N and 11° N latitude. The southern coast near the Gulf of Guinea is the closest Ghana gets to the equator, still several degrees north of 0° latitude.

Guyana in South America lies approximately between 1° N and 9° N latitude; its closest point to the equator is its southern border, which is still about 1 degree, or roughly 111 kilometers, to the north of it.

Though most of Indonesia's landmass and major islands are south of the Equator, a significant portion lies north of it, as the Equator runs directly through the country's islands, dividing the archipelago between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

The Maldives is a long chain of islands spanning the Indian Ocean. The official line of the Equator passes between two of the Maldives' southernmost atolls. Huvadhu Atoll, aka Gaafu, is bisected by the 0° latitude equator line, placing parts of it in each hemisphere.

The equator crosses the very northern tip of Peru, meaning a small part of Peru lies north of the equator. Most of the country is in the Southern Hemisphere, but not all of it. The town of Güepí, in the Loreto Region of northeastern Peru, is located just north of the equator.

The Republic of the Congo, aka Congo-Brazzaville, straddles the equator, with land from about 4°N to 5°S latitude. The equator crosses through the country near the town of Makoua.

The equator runs right through the island nation of Sao Tome and Principe, in the Gulf of Guinea, off the west coast of Central Africa placing it in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Suriname is situated north of the equator in South America, lying between approximately 2° N and 6° N latitude.
