In 1728 a Danish missionary founded a city and named it "Godthab" meaning "good hope". The site of Godthab was the location of the native settlement of "Nuuk", meaning "cape" in Greenlandic. When home rule was established in Greenland, the replacement of European names with Greenlandic names began, and Godthab eventually became known as Nuuk. Nuuk is the capital and by far the largest city in Greenland.
