Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nuuk

Answer: Godthab

In 1728 a Danish missionary founded a city and named it "Godthab" meaning "good hope". The site of Godthab was the location of the native settlement of "Nuuk", meaning "cape" in Greenlandic. When home rule was established in Greenland, the replacement of European names with Greenlandic names began, and Godthab eventually became known as Nuuk. Nuuk is the capital and by far the largest city in Greenland.
2. Pituffik Space Base

Answer: Thule Air Base

When the U.S. Air Force was looking for a place to build a ballistic missile warning system, northern Greenland was ideal, being close to the polar route that those missiles would take flying from the USSR to the US. In 1951 a small hamlet called "Pituffik" (meaning "quay") was located on the site chosen for what became Thule Air Base.

In 2023, Thule was transferred to the U.S. Space Force and renamed Pituffik Space Base.
3. Qeqertaat

Answer: Kaffeklubben

Qeqertaat is the northernmost undisputed point of land on Earth; the dispute arises over the characteristics of "land" - does a shifting sandbar count? Does land that is covered by the tide count? Does a gravel bar that sits on an ice sheet count? There are at least five such points of "land" that are closer to the pole, but Qeqertaat is permanently above water and is attached to bedrock and so is "undisputed" as land.
4. Kalaallit Nunaat

Answer: Greenland

"Kalaallit Nunaat" means "land of the Kalaallit" in Greenlandic, the Kalaallit bring the main group of Inuit natives that inhabit the southwest coast of the island where the majority of the total population is concentrated. The island was named "Groenland" by Erik the Red, a Norse Viking, who landed on there around 982 CE.
5. Qaanaaq

Answer: Thule

Qaanaaq is located at 77 degrees North latitude, one of the northernmost towns in the world. The native population was forcibly removed from their previous home and settled in what was then named New Thule in 1953, their previous home being used to build Thule Air Base for the U.S. Air Force.
6. Kalaallisut

Answer: Greenlandic language

Kalaallisut has the largest number of speakers, approximately 57,000 in 2026, of the Inuit language group. In 2009, the Greenland home rule government made Kalaallisut the sole official language of the territory.
7. Qikiqtaaluup Ikinga

Answer: Davis Strait

Qikiqtaaluup Ikinga is located between Baffin Island in Canada and Greenland, between the Arctic Ocean to the north and the Labrador Sea to the south. English explorer John Davis charted the area in the late 1500s while searching for the fabled Northwest Passage.
8. Kanginsap Qinngua

Answer: Qinngua Valley

Qinngua Valley contains the only natural forest in Greenland in a valley approximately 9 miles (15 km) long. The valley is protected from cold winds of the interior, and the area of southwest Greenland is warmed by the Gulf Stream. Approximately 300 species of plants are present in the valley, and it is a protected natural area.
9. Nunap Isua

Answer: Cape Farewell

Nunap Isua is the southernmost point of Greenland at approximately 59 degrees 76 minutes north latitude, approximately the same as Oslo Norway.
10. Ilisimatusarfik

Answer: University of Greenland

Located in the capital city of Nuuk, this is the only university in Greenland. Student enrollment is around 200 students, with an academic staff of approximately 15. Classes are taught in Danish, Greenlandic, and English.
