Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the highest concentration of German sunken warship tonnage from WWI?

Answer: Scapa Flow

Rather than hand over the fleet to the British, the Germans scuttled their remaining ships in Scapa Flow - a decision that was immensely popular with the German public.
2. Which is NOT a battle of WWI?

Answer: Channel Dash / Operation Cerberus

Channel Dash / Operation Cerberus was the bold action of the WW II battlecruisers Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, as well as the Prinz Eugen's dash up the English channel, from France to Germany. Rather bold and a hit on British image.
3. The Germans ships that won at Coronel were soundly defeated at which battle?

Answer: Falkland Islands

Coronel off the Chilean coastal town of Coronel, was maybe one of the greater naval victories in the war for the Germans, but Britain sent two battlecruisers to eliminate the threat that the German fleet presented. The Battle of the Falkland Islands saw the end of this threat.
4. At Jutland, what was referred to as "The Death Ride"?

Answer: German battlecruisers holding off the entire British fleet, allowing the German fleet to escape behind smoke, and the threat of torpedo

Very brave phase, totally wrecking the battlecruiser force for the rest of the war. But the German fleet survived to make base.
5. We all know about dreadnoughts, but which was NOT notable about the superdreadoughts of the Queen Elizabeth class, significant for the era and among the very best dreadnought/battleship classes of all time?

Answer: They had decks which could launch up to 8 aircraft making them hybrid battleship/carriers.

Among the very very best battleship classes ever.
6. Which one of the following navies did NOT suffer any dreadnought or battlecruiser losses during WWI due to combat?

Answer: United States

Yes, Austria Hungary did lose a dreadnought. SMS Szent István was sunk by Italian motor torpedo boats very late in the war. Britain and Germany lost battlecruisers at Jutland (among other places).
7. The sinking of which ship in 1915 played a key role in turning opinion in the US against Germany?

Answer: RMS Lusitania

SS Andrea Doria sunk in sight of shore much later, and the Titanic, well, that was pre-World War I. The Arandora Star was sunk off the coast of Ireland on 2 July 1940 in World War II while transporting interned Italian nationals (and some Germans) from Britain to Canada.
8. Battlecruisers had to sacrifice something to reach the speeds they did. The British tended to sacrifice what and what did the Germans tend to sacrifice?

Answer: (B) Armor / (G) Gun caliber

The Germans tended to have smaller gun calibers on their battlecruisers when compared to their dreadnought counterparts. They made up for this with superior fire control. They were also far tougher opponents then their British counterparts. The British tended to have same gun calibers, but, some of the battlecruisers had negligible armor, at best.

The Germans as a fleet tended to have lesser range as they planned to fight in the North Sea, unlike the British who had to plan on fighting on any ocean.
9. Which of these admirals was NOT present at Jutland?

Answer: Adm. Doenitz

Doenitz became the head of the German navy in WW II, after Adm Raeder. In fact, it was Admiral Doenitz that was head of the Third Reich at the time of surrender. Hipper was the German battlecruiser commander, Scheer and Jellicoe were the overall fleet commanders for the German and British sides, respectively.
10. Which capital ship from WWI survived on active service, never being a museum ship, until decomissioned in 1950, finally being scrapped in 1973.

Answer: SMS Goeben

Goeben (as well as Breslau) were in the Mediterranean sea at the outbreak of war. They sought refuge, finally finding it in Turkey. But the cost was that they were turned over to the Turks in exchange for Turkey entering the war on the German side. The Goeben was renamed Yavuz Sultan Selim, later shortened to Yavuz.

It was commissioned in 1912, scrapped in 1973 giving it some life for 61 yrs. Not bad.
