Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Traditional Japanese Breakfast Foods

natto - Fermented soybeans that are very sticky and have stringy, mucus-like strands when stirred. They are often mixed with soy sauce and hot mustard (karashi) and eaten over rice as a traditional Japanese breakfast food.

miso soup - A warm soup made from fermented soybean paste (miso), usually with tofu, seaweed, and green onions. It is a comforting and common part of breakfast.

grilled fish - Fish such as salmon or mackerel that is lightly salted and grilled until the skin is crispy. It adds protein and flavor to the meal.

rolled sweet omelette - A slightly sweet egg omelette that is cooked in thin layers and rolled into a block shape. It is soft, fluffy, and often sliced before serving.

raw egg - A fresh raw egg that is sometimes cracked over hot rice and mixed in. The heat of the rice gently cooks it while making the dish creamy.

tsukemono - Pickled vegetables such as cucumber, radish, or cabbage. They are salty, crunchy, and help balance the meal.

umeboshi - A very sour and salty pickled plum often eaten with rice. It is thought to help with digestion and add a strong flavor contrast.

nori - Thin sheets of dried seaweed that are slightly salty and umami-rich. They are often wrapped around rice or eaten as a side.

okayu - Soft rice porridge made by cooking rice in a lot of water. It is easy to digest and often eaten when someone is sick or wants a light meal.

rakkyo - Small pickled onions with a crunchy texture and slightly sweet-sour taste. They are often served as a side dish or garnish.

NOT traditional Japanese breakfast foods

bacon - Bacon is pork that has been salted and often smoked, then sliced and cooked until crispy. It is commonly eaten at breakfast and has a salty, rich flavor. We Canadians LOVE our Canadian (or back as the Americans call it) bacon.

baked beans - Baked beans are beans cooked slowly in a sweet and savory sauce, often made with tomato or molasses. They are soft, filling, and often eaten with breakfast or grilled foods. A traditional UK breakfast food.

surströmming - Surströmming is fermented herring from Sweden that has a very strong smell and taste. It is usually eaten with flatbread, potatoes, and onions in small amounts because of its intense flavor.

balut - Balut is a fertilized duck egg that is incubated and then boiled and eaten. It is a common street food, especially in the Philippines, and is known for its strong flavor and unusual texture.

casu martzu - Casu martzu is a traditional cheese from Sardinia that contains live insect larvae. The cheese becomes very soft and strong in flavor as it ferments. Though you can find it, this cheese is actually illegal to sell for health reasons.
