Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which breakfast cereal uses an endangered predator for their advertising character?

Answer: Kellogg's Frosted Flakes

Tony the Tiger has been the mascot for Kellogg's Frosted Flakes since 1951 when the originators, graphic artist Eugene Kolkey and art director Edward Kern sketched him in response to a contest to determine what the mascot would be for this new cereal. Tony has a wife (Mrs. Tony) and a son (Tony Jr.). He is the son of Mama Tony.
2. Which breakfast cereal uses a cartoon mascot which could, possibly, be a relative of Bugs Bunny?

Answer: Trix

Trix was introduced in 1955 as a sugar-coated version of their popular Kix cereal. The original mascot was a flamingo, but the next year he was apparently laid off and the silly rabbit got the job. Since then, the slogan "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids" has not changed.
3. Cornelius, the cartoon mascot for which cereal, has good reason to fear Colonel Sanders?

Answer: Kellogg's Corn Flakes

Although corn flakes were developed in 1894 and have been commercially available since Kellogg's was founded in 1906, it was not until 1957 that they adopted Cornelius Rooster as the spokesman for their cereal. As everyone knows, Colonel Sanders uses a LOT of chicken in his operation, and it would serve Cornelius well to lay low when he's around.
4. Which breakfast cereal uses a South American avian for their cartoon mascot? Oot-fray Oops-lay.

Answer: Froot Loops

Toucan Sam has been the mascot for Kellogg's Froot Loops ever since the cereal was introduced in 1963. He has an incredible sense of smell and is always able to located a hidden bowl of Froot Loops as he recites his tagline "Follow your nose, it always knows".

The color bands on the nose of Toucan Sam once represented the flavors of the bits in the cereal, but now that they have eight different flavors, this is no longer practical. They once advertised their cereal by using the Pig-Latin version for it - oot-fray oops-lay.
5. The cartoon mascot for which breakfast cereal is a mythical, height-challenged critter who is very tricky? But if you manage to catch him, he can make you very wealthy.

Answer: Lucky Charms

Lucky Charms was created in 1964. General Mills found they had excess manufacturing capacity and challenged a team of developers to come up with a cereal that could make use of this capacity. One developer, after a visit to a grocery store came up with the idea of mixing cheerios with bits of Brach's confectionery peanuts, the orange peanuts that were once sold as penny candy.

The advertising crew came up with the idea of marketing the cereal around the idea of charms on a charm bracelet, and thus Lucky Charms was born. From the "lucky" they came up with Lucky the Leprechaun.

It is said that if you catch a leprechaun, he will lead you to his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
6. Which breakfast cereal uses an apian critter for their cartoon mascot? Don't get stung by this one.

Answer: Honey Nut Cheerios

BuzzBee is the mascot for Honey Nut Cheerios. As you know, the genus name for bees is "apis" which is Latin for "bees". This cereal was introduced in 1979. Their mascot was named as a result of a national contest in 2000 to pick a name for him. A 5th grader from Texas picked the name BuzzBee and so it has been ever since.
7. Which breakfast cereal has a cartoon mascot that you would definitely not want to meet in a dark alley? Rather than you taking a bite of the cereal, he might take a bite out of you.

Answer: Count Chocula

Count Chocula is one of the family of monster cereals from General Mills, which included at various times FrankenBerry, Boo Berry, Fruit Brute and Yummy Mummy. When FrankenBerry was introduced, it used a pigment that could not be digested, and which ended up turning the stool of some kiddies pink. I suppose that must have been far more frightening than the cereal's mascot, especially to mothers, but the kids most likely thought it was really cool.
8. Which breakfast cereal uses a cartoon mascot which started out as a pollywog? Can you dig it?

Answer: Honey Smacks

Kellogg's introduced Sugar Smacks in 1953 and in 1980 they changed the name to Honey Smacks. From 1961 until 1965, they used Quick Draw McGraw for their mascot, but later on they switched to Dig Em Frog as their spokesman. Although putting the word "honey" in the name of the cereal may make it sound healthy, the truth is that it is more than 50% sugar.
9. The picture you're going to see on the front of this cereal box changes from time to time depending on who the latest sports hero might be. Name it.

Answer: Wheaties

General Mills' Wheaties cereal is known for picturing prominent athletes on their packages. It was introduced in 1924 as "Washburn's Gold Medal Whole Wheat Flakes", a name which obviously was going to have to change just so the customers could remember it. The first athlete who was showcased on the front of the box was Lou Gherig in 1934.
10. The cartoon mascot for which cereal is definitely one heavenly body, but one that is never seen at night?

Answer: Raisin Bran

Sunny the Sun is the mascot for Kellogg's Raisin Bran cereal and the sun is surely our most important heavenly body. Although it is frequently referred to as a "healthy" cereal, Consumers Reports says that it actually has a very low nutrition rating.

The first Raisin-bran cereal on the market was Skinner's Raisin Bran and when Post and Kellogg's came out with their versions of raisin-brans, Skinner's sued for trademark infringement. Skinner's suit was overturned in 1943 and Post and Kellogg's have cornered the market ever since.
