Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Carbonated bright orange coloured drink said to be "made in Scotland from girders" in a famous advertising campaign.

Answer: Irn-Bru

Irn-Bru is an orange coloured carbonated drink made by the Scottish company AG Barr. The drink was first launched in 1889 and was called Iron Brew, however in the 1940s the law in the UK changed so that products could not be named or marketed in ways which were misleading and as Iron Brew neither contained iron nor was made through a brewing process AG Barr renamed the drink Irn-Bru to get around the law.

The flavour of the drink is an often-debated topic, according to the ingredients list the drink contains 'flavourings' including caffeine and quinine.
2. Bright orange / red coloured, mixed fruit flavoured soft drink first launched in 1924.

Answer: Tizer

Tizer was originally launched in 1924 by the brothers Fred and Tim Pickup and was first named 'Pickup's Appetiser' which was later shortened to Tizer. The brand was sold to AG Barr in 1972. The exact recipe and flavour profile of the drink is a secret with AG Barr just stating it contains a "unique blend of citrus and berry flavours".
3. Blackcurrant flavoured juice drink designed to be diluted with water.

Answer: Ribena

Ribena is a soft drink made from blackcurrants and is sold in concentrated form needing to be diluted with water before it can be drunk. The name Ribena is taken from the botanical name of the blackcurrant which is Ribes nigrum. The drink was first manufactured by the company HW Carter and became popular in the Second World War when it was provided free of charge to young children to boost their vitamin C intake. HW Carter was sold to the Beecham Group in the 1950s who took over manufacturing Ribena and continued to keep the brand through various mergers although in 2013 the brand was sold to the Japanese drinks company Suntory.

While the classic still blackcurrant version is still popular Ribena has been made in other fruit flavours over the years and at times has been available in pre-mixed ready to drink versions and sparkling versions.
4. An orange coloured carbonated drink originally high in glucose syrup and traditionally marketed towards those who were ill.

Answer: Lucozade

Lucozade was created by William Hunter, a pharmacist in Newcastle upon Tyne and was originally called 'Glucozade'. In 1938 the company Beecham bought the rights to the drink, renamed it Lucozade and marketed it as a drink to help restore energy to those who were ill, something that was reflected in the fact it was primarily available through pharmacies.

In the 1980s the drink was re-oriented as a sports energy drink and new flavours were added to the range. The amount of sugar was cut in 2017 so that the drink would be exempt from the 'sugar tax' which levied additional taxes on sugary drinks to promote healthier choices.
5. A mixed fruit drink flavoured with herbs and spices, originally sold to be diluted with water and more recently available in a carbonated version.

Answer: Vimto

Vimto is made from the juice of grapes, raspberries, blackcurrants and carrots and has herbs and spices added for flavour. The drink was originally created in the Manchester area by John Nichols who saw a gap in the market for soft drinks thanks to the growing temperance movement in the area.

The drink is still made by Nichols plc which is now headquartered in Merseyside. For many years the drink was only available as a concentrate to be diluted with water before drinking with a carbonated version created some time later.
6. A range of sparkling and still juice drinks made from exotic fruit such as mango and lychee.

Answer: Rubicon

Rubicon drinks was established in 1982 by Naresh Nagrecha and Vishram Vekaria who had immigrated to the UK from Asia. They established the company to bring exotic fruit juices to the UK market particularly aiming at ethnic and immigrant communities.

Rubicon was bought by the Scottish drinks company AG Barr in 2008 who continue to produce the Rubicon range. The range includes sparkling fruit flavoured drinks and still juices made from fruits such as mango, lychee, guava and others.
7. Originally an orange flavoured sparkling drink now available in a range of fruit flavours.

Answer: Tango

Tango was first sold in 1958 in its original flavour of orange. It was created by the Welsh company Corona Soft Drinks. The Tango brand was acquired by the Beecham Group when they bought Corona in 1958. The brand was sold to Britvic in 1986. The brand is known in the UK for its outlandish marketing campaigns often of a surreal nature.

The title of this quiz "You Know When You've Been Tango'd" was an advertising slogan used by the drink in the 1990s.
8. A brand of the traditional British sparkling drink dandelion and burdock.

Answer: D'N'B

Drinks flavoured with the dandelion and burdock plants have been consumed in the UK since medieval times eventually evolving into a carbonated soft drink. The drink was first produced commercially by a Huddersfield company owned by Ben Shaw with other manufacturers also making versions of the drink. D'N'B is made by the Scottish company AG Barr which describes it as a 'dandelion and burdock flavour soft drink'.
9. Pear flavoured soft drink originally made by the Whiteway's cider company.

Answer: Peardrax

Peardrax was originally made by the cider producer Whiteway's as a non-alcoholic drink similar to Perry, which is a cider style drink made from pears rather than apples. Whiteway's also produced Cydrax which was an apple-based version of the drink. The drink was withdrawn from sale in 1988 after falling sales, however Peardrax is still popular in Trinidad and Tobago.
10. A still, fruit flavoured drink originally marketed as a non-alcoholic drink for bars and clubs.

Answer: J2O

J2O was first launched in 1998 and was created by Sheraz Dar who was working for the company Britvic. The drink was originally marketed as a sophisticated soft drink for those who wished to go out to bars and clubs but not drink alcohol. The name J2O is a play on H2O the chemical formula for water with the J standing for juice.

Originally only available at bars and clubs in 2002 it was made available in supermarkets and other shops.
