"Girl with a Pearl Earring" is also the name of a famous oil painting by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, thought to have been painted around 1665. Using this painting as her source of inspiration, Chevalier's fictional novel takes place in the seventeenth century and details the life of 16-year-old Griet. Griet is a maid in the Vermeer family household, and she eventually models for Johannes Vermeer for the painting which will become "Girl with a Pearl Earring".

"The Catcher in the Rye" was published in 1951 and introduced the world to fictional protagonist Holden Caulfield, a privileged teenager whose feelings of angst and alienation catapulted him to icon status of teenage rebellion. The novel was met with critical success but also a lot of controversy.

It was banned from many schools for vulgar language, sexuality and a poor moral code. Robert John Bardo had a copy of the book when he murdered actress Rebecca Schaeffer. Mark David Chapman also had a copy of the book on him when he murdered John Lennon in which he had written "This is my statement" and signed it as "Holden Caulfield".

A copy of the book was found in John Hinckley, Jr.'s hotel room after his failed assassination attempt of President Ronald Reagan.

Since 1955 the Hugo Award has been given to the best Science Fiction or Fantasy work in literature. There are several categories of the Hugo award including: Best Novel, Best Novella, Best Novelette, Best Short Story, Best Professional Artist (not all categories are listed).

Some previous categories have been discontinued. The first novel to win the Hugo was "The Demolished Man" by Alfred Bester. The 2009 winner for Best Novel was "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman.

Nixon was a U.S. president and never authored books for young readers.
