8. Before Audrey Hepburn played the part, which American author created the literary character of Holly Golightly?

Answer: Truman Capote

Holly Golightly is probably the best-known character created by Truman Capote. Influenced by the many fabulous women of the author's acquaintance, Holly is a New York socialite on the look-out for a wealthy husband. The story is told from the perspective of her neighbour who admires and is fascinated by her.

The novella was first published by Esquire magazine in 1958. In 1961, Blake Edwards directed Audrey Hepburn in a much-adapted motion picture version. Marilyn Monroe was Capote's favourite for the movie lead. Attempts to further distort the story into an American television series blessedly failed.
