Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Comic book artist who falls in love with a lesbian

Answer: Chasing Amy

The 1997 rom-com film "Chasing Amy" followed the story of a comic strip artist named Holden (Ben Affleck) who fell in love with another named Alyssa, who identified as a lesbian. The film explored themes of sexuality, identity, and the complexities of relationships. "Chasing Amy" was written and directed by Kevin Smith and partly inspired by a brief scene from the 1994 film "Go Fish". It led to two spin-off films - "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" (1991) and "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" (2018) - in which Affleck had cameo appearances.
2. One of two scheming fallen angels

Answer: Dogma

There have been more than 15 films where Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have appeared together. The 1999 fantasy comedy "Dogma" was one of these. In this case, Ben Affleck played the fallen angel Bartleby with Matt Damon playing the other, namely Loki. Having been cast out of Heaven, their plan was to sneak back in again by exploiting a loophole in Catholic dogma.

This was another Kevin Smith-directed film.
3. Returning Korean War veteran who strikes up an unlikely friendship

Answer: Going All The Way

In the 1997 comedy-drama "Going All The Way", Ben Affleck portrayed Gunner Casselman, a golden-boy type soldier and Korean veteran. He befriended another veteran, the nerdish Sonny Burns, on the train home. The film is based on the 1970 novel of the same name by Dan Wakefield and explores themes of post-war trauma, friendship, and the search for identity.

It could be described as a period coming-of-age film.
4. Young oil-rig worker helping to save the Earth

Answer: Armageddon

In the 1998 disaster movie "Armageddon", Ben Affleck was an ensemble cast member and portrayed the character A.J. Frost, a skilled oil driller who was recruited by NASA to help save the world from a massive asteroid. The recruited oil drilling team (including A. J.) got sent out to the asteroid to deal with the threat. The real-life NASA's contribution to the film was to lend two space suits and allow the filming of two space shuttle launches.
5. Writer en route to his wedding who is distracted by a free-spirited girl

Answer: Forces of Nature

Ben Affleck played opposite Sandra Bullock in the 1999 romantic comedy "Forces of Nature". A series of mishaps occurred as the pair made their way cross-country to the wedding venue in what has been described as a romantic shaggy dog story. He ended up getting married.
6. Bartender working on New Year's Eve with party-goers all around

Answer: 200 Cigarettes

In the 1999 comedy film "200 Cigarettes", Ben Affleck played the bartender character. The film was set in New York City in 1981 and followed various groups of people as they navigated their way to a party. Even Affleck's character ended up there. There was cigarette smoking involved and the music was good, although the film didn't fare well with the critics.

The film title is reportedly named after the carton of cigarettes bought by the character Lucy for Kevin for his birthday, which happens to fall on New Year's Eve.
7. Sheriff who investigates a ski resort village full of corpses

Answer: Phantoms

This 1998 sci-fi horror film was an adaptation of and took its name from Dean Koontz's 1983 novel "Phantoms". Ben Affleck portrayed a Sheriff Bryce Hammond who was investigating the issue. It turns out a creature with a god-like complex was involved and the focus of the film then turned to dealing with it whilst the supporting cast was whittled down.
8. Best friend of a young mathematical genius

Answer: Good Will Hunting

In a script co-written by Affleck and Matt Damon, the 1997 drama "Good Will Hunting" was about a self-taught mathematical genius Will Hunting (Matt Damon) who worked as a janitor. Affleck portrayed the character's best friend Chuckie Sullivan. The script went through a bit of development hell before filming took place, however the end result was Oscars to Affleck and Damon for the screenplay and to Robin Williams as Best Supporting Actor.
9. Advertising executive who gave up his seat on a plane which then crashed

Answer: Bounce

Essentially, the 2000 romantic drama "Bounce" was a 'lovers with untold secrets' type of film. Buddy Amaral (portrayed by Ben Affleck) felt guilty, turned to alcohol and ended up at Alcoholics Anonymous. He contacted the wife of the deceased as part of his treatment programme. They fell in love and then a video tape recording provided the big reveal, namely his part in her husband's death.
10. Ex-con unexpectedly drawn into a heist

Answer: Reindeer Games

The action thriller "Reindeer Games" (2000) was also released under the name "Deception", arguably the main theme in the film. Ben Affleck portrayed the ex-con Rudy Duncan, who took on the identity of his (apparently) deceased cellmate to meet a girl who the cellmate had been writing to but not met.

This led to being roped into a casino heist with a succession of twists and turns. Financially, the film bombed.
