Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Welsh singer persuaded Jim Steinman, writer of the "Bat Out of Hell" album, to provide these lyrics for a 1983 hit song? "(Turn around) Every now and then I get a little bit lonely And you never coming 'round"

Answer: Bonnie Tyler

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" is the lead single from Bonnie Tyler's "Faster Than the Speed of Night" album of 1983. It is a duet with Steinman putting together the band for the recording, including his long-time collaborator Rory Dodd who sang the 'turn around' refrain. The power ballad became her biggest hit, topping the charts in eight countries and selling over six million copies. Steinman is quoted in a 2002 report via Playbill Online as saying it was intended as a vampire love song and he subsequently used it in his 1997 musical adaptation "Dance of the Vampires" remade as "Totale Finsternis". He also said that the original song title was "Vampires in Love".

The image shows an attractive woman making a mosaic, which could be read as 'bonnie' and 'tiler'.
2. Who is the British singer songwriter who co-wrote and sang the piano ballad with these lyrics? "Hello, it's me I was wondering if after all these years you'd like to meet"

Answer: Adele

"Hello" is a popular title for songs with all the singers listed as possible answers doing their own versions. This one written by Adele and her producer was released in 2015 as lead single from her album "25" (2015). A song with themes of nostalgia and regret, it topped the charts in over thirty countries.

In theory you can get the song title and the singer's name (add L) from the image clue.
3. A protest song aimed at club bouncers, which Canadian group has some success with a video showcasing Morris dancing and these lyrics? "We can dance if we want to We can leave your friends behind 'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance Well, they're no friends of mine"

Answer: Men Without Hats

Inspiration for this song was being ejected from a club for pogo dancing, as reported in a 2012 interview with Sam Tweedle. Written by lead singer Ivan Doroschuk of the band Men Without Hats, "The Safety Dance" (1982) was the result. It did better in the US than Canada and was very successful in South Africa, topping the charts in four countries.

The lack of hats on the four men portrayed in the image is the clue. The number is not significant - there have been over thirty people in the band over the years, both men and women, with the band size varying.
4. The song title for these lyrics is also the name of a film showcasing the band's songs - but who are the band? "I've been cheated by you since I don't know when So I made up my mind, it must come to an end Look at me now, will I ever learn?"

Answer: ABBA

Opening track in ABBA's 1975 "ABBA" album, "Mamma Mia" hit the top of the charts in five countries. American actress Meryl Streep did a version for the 2008 film "Mamma Mia!" which charted. Another version was recorded for the 2018 film "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again", also charting.

The image shows a sheep looking into a mirror. If it were saying: "Baa", reflected and reversed (like mirrors do), could give you 'ABBA'. Perhaps the lyrics are more helpful.
5. With lyrics inspired by a message left for parents, which British duo had success with this song? "You put the boom-boom into my heart (do do) You send my soul sky high when your lovin' starts Jitterbug into my brain (yeah yeah) Goes a bang-bang-bang 'til my feet do the same"

Answer: Wham!

Written by George Michael, his inspiration was a note left by his bandmate Andrew Ridgley. The song "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" was released in 1984 and reached the top in a dozen countries.

The image shows a judge's gavel, a ceremonial mallet or hammer, being slammed down on a block. The noise it makes is the clue.
6. Being a rock music fan is what creates the barrier here. Which American rock band reflects on being an outsider with these lyrics? "Her name is Noelle, I have a dream about her She rings my bell, I got gym class in half an hour Oh, how she rocks in Keds and tube socks But she doesn't know who I am And she doesn't give a damn about me"

Answer: Wheatus

"Teenage Dirtbag" is the song and Wheatus is the alternative rock band. The song was released in 2000 and was written by Brendan B. Brown, guitarist and vocalist for the band. In a 2012 interview published in "Tone Deaf" magazine, Brown said the inspiration for the song came from a homicide when he was ten years old during the "Satanic panic", which was sparked by a now-discredited book. The killer was wearing an AC/DC t-shirt so the music genre was associated with the panic. Brown felt labelled for his interest in the genre.

The image shows a field of wheat and a US flag, giving Wheatus.
7. Which British rock band first sang these lyrics in 1995? "Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you By now, you should've somehow realised what you gotta do I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now"

Answer: Oasis

Originally titled "Wishing Stone", "Wonderwall" comes from the 1995 album "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" by Oasis. Written by Noel Gallagher, he told NME magazine that it was for his then girl-friend, however in 2002, by now divorced, he refuted that in a BBC radio interview saying it is about an imaginary friend. It is not a favourite of Liam Gallagher who actually sings it however it has frequently been on Spotify's most-streamed list.

The image shows a camel at an oasis.
8. Inspired by David Bowie's 1969 song "Space Oddity", the lyrics come from a 1986 song by a Swedish rock band. What is the name of the group? "We're leaving together But still it's farewell And maybe we'll come back To Earth, who can tell?"

Answer: Europe

The song "The Final Countdown" was released in 1986 as the first single from the album of the same name. Written by their lead singer Joey Tempest, it was built around a keyboard riff written a few years previously with lyrics inspired by Bowie's "Space Oddity", according to Tempest in Classic Rock magazine in 2005. It was originally intended as an opening song for concerts. Released as a single, it topped the charts in many countries.

Apart from Europe, which was formed in Sweden, all the other bands were formed in London, UK. The image shows a 19th century photograph of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is in Europe.
9. The lyrics are from this American rock band's signature song. Which is the band? "Strangers waitin' Up and down the boulevard Their shadows searchin' in the night Streetlights, people Livin' just to find emotion Hidin' somewhere in the night"

Answer: Journey

The chorus which contains the title of the song, namely "Don't Stop Believin", only appears towards the end of the song. Released in 1981 from the album "Escape", writing credits goes to three of the band members including the newly-joined Jonathan Cain. A 2010 article in The Guardian newspaper reports that as a struggling musician, Cain used to receive encouragement from his father with the phrase: "Don't stop believing ..." which he wanted to use in the song. The song has made records for digital downloads, no doubt helped by the 2009 version recorded by the cast of the American TV series "Glee". In fact the "Glee" cast did four versions over the years of the show.

The image clue shows an airport departure area.
10. Which Scottish duo came up with these lyrics? "But I would walk 500 miles And I would walk 500 more Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles To fall down at your door"

Answer: The Proclaimers

Written by the Reid twins who formed the rock duo The Proclaimers in 1983, the 1988 song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" is the lead single from their second album "Sunshine on Leith". Chart success in America came after the song as used in the 1993 American romantic comedy film "Benny & Joon" with the song reaching number three in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart as a result.
