Once again the competition took place in the Point Theatre in Dublin. The theatre was greatly redeveloped in 2007 and is now known as The O2.

Answer: United Kingdom

The United Kingdom won with their entry "Love Shine a Light", sung by Katrina and The Waves. It was written by Kimberley Rew.

Katrina & The Waves were a 1980s pop-rock band featuring Katrina Leskanich. They had one big hit prior to their Eurovision performance, the song "Walking on Sunshine" which went to number eight in the Billboard UK charts and nine in the US charts. Their only other big hit was the Eurovision entry, and the band broke up in 1998.

The UK's entry "Love Shine a Light" scored more top scores than any other entry to date. It received ten full twelve-point awards, five ten-point scores, three eight-pointers, three seven-pointers, one six-pointer, one five-pointer and one one-pointer. Every other country awarded it at least one point, giving the entry a total score of 227.

Only one entry was sung in French this year. It was France's entry, "Sentiments Songes" (which apparently translates as "Feelings, Lies"), sung by Fanny.

Switzerland and The Netherlands tied for twenty-second position with five points each, and poor Norway and Portugal didn't get a single point, vying for the dubious honour of coming in last.
