Eurovision: 2000 Trivia Quiz

Answer: Stockholm

The competition took place in the Globe Arena in Stockholm. Built as the top half of a sphere, it represents the sun in "The Sweden Solar System", a scale model of the solar system which spreads out as far as Kiruna, which represents the point where the solar wind meets outer space. (Okay, astronomers, I know that's a really loose description, but I doubt anyone wants to see the mathematical formulae here!)

Answer: Denmark

Denmark won with its entry "Fly on the Wings of Love". Sung in English by the Olsen Brothers, it was written by one of the brothers, Jorgen.

Answer: Nicki French

Nicki French was a session singer who in the mid-1990s started recording cover versions of various songs, which became hits in the UK (with one, "Total Eclipse of the Heart", reaching number two on the US Billboard charts). The UK entry, "Don't Play That Song Again", was written by John Springate and Gerry Shephard. It placed sixteenth out of the twenty-four entries.

Answer: The Netherlands

It was the Netherlands who had to terminate the broadcast halfway through the contest. Earlier that day there had been a huge fire in the city of Enschede, at a fireworks importer. The fire extended to two illegally-placed containers of fireworks outside the building, causing an explosion which took the lives of twenty-two people, including four firemen.

Answer: thirteen

Thirteen entries were sung entirely in English this year. They were the entries from Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Russia, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Malta's entry was sung in both English and Maltese.

Answer: first time broadcast over the internet

For the first time in Eurovision history, the competition was made available over the internet. This meant that people in the countries where their national stations were not covering it, including Bulgaria, Italy and the Czech Republic, could view the contest.

Answer: Germany

Germany's entry, "Wadde hadde dudde da?" ("What Do You Have There?") tried to answer the question - the costumes left little to the imagination! The performer, Stefan Raab, wore a white suit with gold sequins, the backing singers wore white minidresses (also sequined) over gold-sequined hot pants and bikini tops, and there were dancers in various colours of bodysuits leaping about.

Raab was the writer of "Guildo hat euch lieb!" ("Guildo Loves You"), whch was the 1998 German entry by the madcap Guildo Horn.

Kattis Ahlstrom is a Swedish journalist and presenter for both television and radio.

Anders Lundin was one of the first presenters of the Swedish version of the show "Survivor".
