Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Irish city was the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Dublin

This year the competition was held in a much larger town - Dublin. It was staged at an old railway station, the Point Theatre, which (until its renovation in 2007/8) was noteworthy for poor acoustics and a long queue for the ladies' room.
2. Which country won the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Ireland

Hat trick! Ireland won the competition for the third year in a row, with their entry "Rock 'n' Roll Kids". Sung by Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan, it was written by Brendan Graham.
3. The UK's 1994 entry was a song called "We Will Be Free (Lonely Symphony)". Who sang it?

Answer: Frances Ruffelle

Frances Ruffelle is an English actress and singer, who made her name in such roles as Eponine (Les Miserables), Dinah (Starlight Express) and Roxie Hart (Chicago). She is the daughter of Sylvia Young, OBE, founder of the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London.
4. In 1993 the Eurovision directors held a qualifying round for countries previously part of the Yugoslavian Republic, and anyone else who hadn't taken part in the past. What method did they use this year to limit the number of entries?

Answer: Bottom five from previous year could not perform

The five countries who scored at the bottom in the previous year's competition were not allowed to participate. Belgium, Denmark, Israel, Slovenia and Turkey dropped off for that reason; Italy and Luxembourg also withdrew, allowing plenty of opportunity for everyone else to compete.
5. The current rules stated that each country had to sing in their own official language - but there are a number of countries with more than one official language. How many entries in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest were sung entirely in French?

Answer: one

Only one entry was sung in French this year. It was, to nobody's surprise, that of France, whose entry was "Je suis un vrai garcon" ("I am a Real Boy") - sung Nina Morato.
6. How many countries made their debut at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: seven

As seven countries that had competed in 1993 were either dropped or chose not to take part, there was room for seven new participants to the finals (including some which tried the prior year but did not make it through the preliminary competition). This year saw the first entries from Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia and Slovakia.
7. Until 1997, the juries from each country were permitted to watch the dress rehearsals for the Eurovision Song Contest. In 1994, what action by the Polish performer during dress rehearsal caused something of a scandal?

Answer: sang the entry in English

Poland may have been new to the competition, but they should have been fully aware of the rule that stated that all entries must be sung in a language native to that country. Edyta Gorniak chose to sing her entry, "To nie ja" ("That's Not Me") in English during the dress rehearsal. Six of the other countries called for the Polish entry to be disqualified. The rules, however, require that thirteen countries file a complaint, so the show went on and the Polish entry finished in second place (having been sung in Polish for the actual competition).
8. There were two presenters at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. Cynthia Ni Mhurchu was one; who was the other?

Answer: Gerry Ryan

Cynthia Ni Mhurchu is an Irish barrister (lawyer), teacher and television journalist and presenter. Gerry Ryan also studied law but chose a career which started as a DJ on pirate radio and eventually became a 'shock jock' radio presenter.
9. There's always a halftime - what was the entertainment for the halftime of the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Riverdance

Michael Flatley and Jean Butler gave the very first performance of Riverdance, based on Irish step dancing. It was by far the most popular halftime act performed to date at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Kavanagh was the winner of the 1993 Eurovision Song Contest, Grace O'Malley was a late 16th century pirate and Harry Clarke was an illustrator and stained glass artist who died in 1931.
10. Twenty-five countries vied for the 1994 Eurovision Song crown. That means there should have been a 1st position, 2nd position, 3rd etc, all the way to 25th, right? Wrong - or is it? How many countries, if any, tied for position?

Answer: two

Only two countries tied for one position this year. They were Slovakia and Switzerland, who tied for nineteenth position with fifteen points each.
