Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Swedish city was the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Malmo

This year the competition was held at the Malmo Isstadion in the city of Malmo. The Malmo Isstadion is an indoor sports arena which has hosted events including a Deep Purple contest, Holiday on Ice and the 2003 European Figure Skating Championship.
2. Which country won the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Ireland

Ireland won with their entry "Why Me?", sung by Linda Martin, with 155 points. The UK came second with their song "One Step Out of Time", which received 139 points.
3. The UK's 1992 entry was a song called "One Step Out of Time". Who sang it?

Answer: Michael Ball

"One Step Out of Time" was written by Paul Davies, Tony Ryan, and Victor Stratton. Michael Ball is an English actor and singer who has appeared on stage in roles including Marius in "Les Miserables" and Reginald Bunthorne in Gilbert and Sullivan's "Patience" with the New York City Opera.
4. One country had to substitute a different song from the one it originally had chosen to perform at the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest. Which country was this?

Answer: Switzerland

Switzerland had originally planned to perform the song "Soleil, soleil" ("Sun, Sun") with Geraldine Olivier performing. However, she was disqualified (it is not noted why, but her age was not the matter in contention) so Daisy Auvray performed "Mister Music Man" (sung in French) instead - it had placed second in the national selection competition.
5. The current rules stated that each country had to sing in their own official language - but there are a number of countries with more than one official language. How many entries in the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest were sung at least partially in French?

Answer: three

There were two that sang entirely in French - they were

Belgium - "Nous, on veut des violons" ("We Want Violins") and
Switzerland - "Mister Music Man" (sung in French despite the title being in English).

The French entry, "Monte la rivie" ("Go Up the River"), was sung in both French and Haitian Creole.
6. One country returned to Eurovision after staying out for at least one year. Which country came back?

Answer: The Netherlands

The Netherlands had missed the prior year's competition as it was held on their national holiday "Remembrance of the Dead". This year they placed ninth with their entry "Wijs me de weg" ("Show Me the Way").
7. The stage set for the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest reflected the history of the host country. What was the theme for the stage set?

Answer: Viking ship

The stage was designed to look like the bow of a Viking ship. In the centre was a dragon, with stars on either side.
8. There were two presenters at the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest. Harald Treutiger was one; who was the other?

Answer: Lydia Cappolicchio

Lydia Cappolicchio is a Swedish journalist. Treutiger is a Swedish television presenter who was the first host of that country's version of the reality show Survivor, called "Expedition Robinson".

The others are all Swedish television presenters.
9. There's always a halftime - what was the entertainment for the halftime of the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: A Century of Dance

For lack of any recorded information available to me, one must presume that the halftime entertainment was, indeed, dancers, as the title for it was "A Century of Dance".

Hasseatage was a Swedish comedy duo, Labero is a Swedish magician and Svensk Folkmusik simply means Swedish folk music.
10. Twenty-three countries vied for the 1992 Eurovision Song crown. That means there should have been a 1st position, 2nd position, 3rd etc, all the way to 23rd, right? Wrong - or is it? How many countries, if any, tied for position?

Answer: none

Unusually, no countries tied for position this year. The closest any came was Portugal and Germany with 26 and 27 points respectively, and Sweden, Luxembourg and Belgium with (in order) nine, ten and eleven points.
