Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following quartets are generally considered to make up "The Big Four" of Swedish Death Metal?

Answer: Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Unleashed

Even if the Gothenburg sound made a prominent impact, it was on the Swedish east coast that things first started. Morbid, Nihilist and Carnage were perhaps the earliest ones but Entombed, Dismember, Grave and Unleashed really optimized what their predecessors started and are widely considered to be "The Big Four" of Swedish Death Metal.
2. Dismember is one of the early leading acts in the Swedish Death Metal scene. Their debut album "Like an Ever Flowing Stream" was released in May 1991, but who performed most of the guitar solos on the album?

Answer: Nicke Andersson

Even if David Blomqvist is the prime lead guitarist for Dismember, it was actually Nicke Andersson, at the time the drummer of Entombed, who performed the guitar solos on Dismember's debut album (all but the solo on the song "Override of the Overture" which is performed by Blomqvist). The Dismember logo also originated from Andersson's pen.
3. What is the name of the studio in Stockholm that recorded many of the classic albums of the Swedish Death Metal bands in the 1990s?

Answer: Sunlight Studio (sometimes Sunlight Studios)

Sunlight Studio (or Sunlight Studios) was founded in 1982 in Stockholm by producer Thomas Skogsberg and served as a home for bands like Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Unleashed, At the Gates and Tiamat during the recording of their early albums.
4. Grave is one significant band of Swedish Death metal that does not hail from the country's capital of Stockholm. Which of the following places is their hometown?

Answer: Visby

Visby is the largest town on the island of Gotland which is located outside the south east coast of the Swedish mainland. The cities of Gothenburg, Finspång and Ludvika are on the other hand also well known for their contribution to the Swedish Death Metal scene.
5. Together with members that later would form Entombed, Unleashed's Johnny Hedlund was the bassist for which of the following bands?

Answer: Nihilist

Nihilist were a band that were active in the late 1980s and released three demos, consisting of songs of which some later would end up on Entombed's debut album "Left Hand Path". They also contributed with songs to a four way split single together with Crematory, D.T.A.L. and Strebers. After Johnny's departure from the band, the members formed Entombed and Unleashed respectively.
6. Unleashed's sophomore album, "Shadows in the Deep" contains a cover song. Which one of the following options is correct?

Answer: "Countess Bathory" (originally by Venom)

Unleashed are never afraid to show respect to their elders. Judas Priest's "Breaking the Law" as well as Death's "Evil Dead" are, alongside Venom's "Countess Bathory", examples of this.
7. On "Clandestine", Entombed's second album, Johnny Dordevic is listed as vocalist, but who was actually handling the vocal duties?

Answer: Nicke Andersson

After Lars-Göran Petrov's departure from the band right before the recording of "Clandestine", Nicke Andersson, the drummer and one of the main composers, stepped in behind the microphone. Johnny Dordevic on the other hand was hired as vocalist for the upcoming tour.
8. In 1998, members of Katatonia, Opeth and Edge of Sanity formed a band in tribute to the "increasingly forgotten art of pure death metal". What is the name of the still ongoing band, named after a song by the British Death Metal band Cancer?

Answer: Bloodbath

Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth agreed together with his friends Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström of Katatonia and Dan Swanö of Edge of Sanity to start Bloodbath in 1998. Throughout the years the band has gone through a lot of line up changes and in 2026 when this quiz was written, it consists of Anders Nyström, Martin Axenrot and Nick Holmes.
9. Tiamat is one of the earliest Swedish Death Metal bands. Hailing from Stockholm, their debut "Sumerian Cry" was recorded in 1989 in Sunlight Studio. What was the name of the band during the recording sessions?

Answer: Treblinka

After the recording of "Sumerian Cry" the band split with Johan Hedlund and Jörgen Tullberg continuing the path as Tiamat, while Stefan Lagergren and Anders Holmberg formed the band Expulsion.
10. The rock band Ghost is lead by Tobias Forge. Which Stockholm based Death Metal band was he the vocalist and guitarist of during its active years 1998 - 2004?

Answer: Repugnant

Tobias was at some point a member of all optional bands but Repugnant is the only one that can be considered a Death Metal band. During their active period they recorded the album "Epitome of Darkness" in 2002, released in 2006.
