Answer: I've Been Everywhere

Although originally written by Geoff Mack in the late 1950s, "I've Been Everywhere" has been covered and co-opted multiple times over, and not just in Australia, where it was originally made-- there's a Canadian version by Stompin' Tom Connors; there's an American version by Hank Snow (and Kris Kristofferson...and Johnny Cash). Lucky Starr even made a version for the UK at one point.

The idea of the song is fairly straight-forward as it basically insists that the singer has been everywhere, and then proceeds to list a bunch of major cities and towns they've visited in quick succession.

The song is popular enough a tune that Rihanna even sampled the melody (and some of the lyrics) for her 2011 pop-dance track "Where Have You Been?"

Answer: Silenced by the Night

The lead single from what might be considered their most mature album to-date, "Silenced by the Night" may have failed to hit the heights of Keane's earlier, popular days seen on albums like "Hopes & Fears" and "Under the Iron Sea", but it pointed to a more grounded direction for the indie/piano-pop foursome. The "Strangeland" album would still manage to top the charts in the UK.

The following year, the group would go on to release "The Best of Keane" greatest hits album and then proceed to go on hiatus, with most of the band members taking on solo careers in different directions. It would take until 2019 before they would release "Cause and Effect", their first album to come in below the number one slot on the UK Albums Chart.

Answer: Secret Love

The circumstances pertaining to this song are quite interesting. Day loved the song and took it upon herself to perform it to perfection, allegedly recording it in one take in a studio session in mid-1953. When it appeared in "Calamity Jane" it would get the eye (and ear) of the Academy Awards and eventually win the Oscar. This said, Day refused to perform it at the ceremony, citing anxiety towards performing for the crowd there. This sent her into a depressive spiral, especially when entertainment outlets labelled her as uncooperative for her decision.

Day was, otherwise, successful at the Oscars in other ways. Her song "Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)" would be nominated in 1956, winning the Oscar for "The Man Who Knew Too Much". As an actress she would also get a nomination for her role in "Pillow Talk" in 1960 (losing to Simone Signoret for "A Room at the Top"). Both these songs (as well as "Sentimental Journey") would end up in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Answer: Endless Grey Ribbon

Nick Lowe's debut album, "Jesus of Cool", may have been his peak in terms of reception, being his highest-charting record after releasing in 1978, but his subsequent album (and his only other record with Radar Records before he was picked up by Columbia) had its fans-- at least enough to sustain his career as a pop-rock artist in the UK.

"Labour of Lust" bore the only charting track for Lowe in the U.S. ("Cruel to Be Kind", which hit number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100), but several other singles passed through UK radio circulation. "Endless Grey Ribbon" was omitted from U.S. records, but was kept aside as a B-side for "Cruel to Be Kind" in North America. Hard to say why; it's a solid song.

Answer: Private Universe

Neil Finn is, of course, the lead singer and songwriter for the Australian rock band Crowded House, and this specific track is one of their more subdued offerings, releasing as the sixth of six singles from their 1993 album "Together Alone". While the "Together Alone" album would go Platinum in its home country, it would end up arriving just shy of the top spot on the Australian Albums (ARIA) chart.

While not necessarily their biggest or most memorable hit, "Private Universe" is a favourite for the band, appearing consistently in their live performances and on many of their Greatest Hits records.

Answer: Something Human

A lower-key electronic track from Muse, known for their bombastic stadium rock and electric guitars, "Something Human" is a lot more grounded than the other tracks in "Simulation Theory" which, for the sake of aesthetic, drew from an eighties retrowave style. Songs like "Thought Contagion" and "The Dark Side", from the same album, featured the characteristic Matt Bellamy riffs and falsetto through the lens of "Stranger Things" and "Thriller", but "Something Human", written while the band was on tour for their preceding album, "Drones", hinted at the reality of their exhausting line of work. Naturally, that's all presented through the eyes of a robot.

All the other selections here came from their subsequent album, "Will of the People", which came out in 2022-- four years after "Simulation Theory", after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lpez wanted to hear some progressive alt-rock; this was his recommendation.

Answer: Silhouettes on the Shade

"Silhouettes on the Shade", also released as "Silhouettes", had modest reception upon its release in 1957 both when it was released by The Rays and when it was covered by Canadian group The Diamonds, who re-recorded the song to capitalize on the natural division between segregated radio audiences in the era.

The mid-tempo track would get punched up a little bit for Herman's Hermits' version released in the UK in 1965 while Cliff Richards boosted the production for his 1990 live album, "From A Distance: The Event", which featured the cover as part of classic rock 'n' roll setlist.

Answer: Jump Rope

Although alternative rock band Blue October found their greatest chart hits on their fourth album, "Foiled" (which featured "Hate Me" and "Into the Ocean"), the quintet found renewed momentum on their proceeding album, "Approaching Normal", which hit number four on the U.S. Billboard Alternative Rock Albums chart in 2009. Their next three albums would hit number one.

"Jump Rope" was the third single from the album and, perhaps as a counterpoint to their earlier "Hate Me", it's an optimistic track that insists that "life gets hard, but life's like a jump rope". Though the song failed to chart in the U.S. it was included on the band's acoustic album, "Ugly Side: An Acoustic Evening with Blue October", as a bonus track.

Answer: No Surprises

While "Creep" was the band's first single, appearing on the "Pablo Honey" album back in 1993, both "High and Dry" and "Fake Plastic Trees" appeared on their multiplatinum sophomore album, "The Bends", in early 1995. Naturally, all three songs are amongst their greatest hits.

"No Surprises" is the odd one out here, releasing as the final single from their mega-popular "OK Computer" album in 1997 (following "Karma Police" and "Paranoid Android"). A particularly unique track amongst the tonal density of the album, "No Surprises", which leverages Thom Yorke's haunting vocals, guitars, and a glockenspiel, was recorded in a single take. It hit number four on the UK Singles Chart.

Answer: New York Minute

While Eagles were already in the groove by the late 1970s, producing a number of major hits that would cement their status as one of the legendary rock bands of the 20th century, a blow-up in the band in 1980 would lead to a major hiatus that spanned nearly a decade and a half. It was during this time that lead vocalist Don Henley would go solo, releasing a trio of well-regarded albums.

The last of these three albums, "The End of the Innocence", would be his best-received with both the title track and "New York Minute", both becoming singles, being high-charting adult contemporary hits. When Eagles reunited for "Hell Freezes Over", "New York Minute" was an easy carry-over from this era (along with "The Boys of Summer"). The other Eagles simply weren't able to clock as many hits as Henley in the long run.
