Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which British journalist was the first war correspondent to report the outbreak of World War II?

Answer: Clare Hollingworth

Each was pioneer in the field of journalism in her own right! On August 31, 1939 during Hollingworth's first week as a journalist in Poland while driving along the Polish-German border, she observed large numbers of German troops, hundreds of tanks, armoured cars and field guns, all facing Poland and ready for action.

The next morning she called the British Embassy after she awoke to the roar of Nazi aircraft and tanks. Hollingworth held a telephone out the window to capture the sounds of German forces. Hollingworth's eyewitness account was the first report to the British Foreign Office of the invasion of Poland! Breckinridge began her career as a photographer and videographer. During World War II she was hired by Edward R. Murrow as the first woman correspondent for CBS. Bourke-White was a pioneer in the field of photojournalism.

She was the first woman to fly on bombing missions, and one of the first photographers to document the horrors of Nazi concentration camps. Marguerite Higgins began by reporting on the war from France and later accompanied troops to the Nazi concentration camps in Dachau and Buchenwald.

In later wars, Higgins also covered the fall of Seoul, Korea, and made several trips to Vietnam, where she contracted Leishmaniasis, which led to her death.

3. Who was the first dancer to perform at the White House?

Answer: Martha Graham

In 1937 FDR invited Martha Graham to perform. She was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976 by President Gerald Ford (the First Lady Betty Ford had danced with Graham in her youth) and traveled abroad as a cultural ambassador. Moira Shearer was a British ballet dancer and actress.

Her first film role was Victoria Page in the "The Red Shoes". Diana Adams was a principal dancer for the New York City Ballet from 1950 to 1963 and favorite of George Balanchine. Margot Fonteyne spent her entire career as a dancer with The Royal Ballet and was one of five "Women of Achievement" selected for a set of British stamps issued in August 1996.

Her resignation was met by protests from many people around the country including Amelia Earhart! Richey completed an intensive pilot instructor's course at Roosevelt Field in New York on May 6, 1940 and became the first woman to earn an instructor's license.

She was also the first woman assigned to train military pilots. After the outbreak of World War II she was among a group of American women who went to Britain to ferry aircraft from factories to air bases.

In 1942 the Woman's Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) was organized in the United States and Helen Richey joined. She spent the next 16 months ferrying aircraft from American factories to air bases. The WASP organization was disbanded in December of 1944 and Helen Richey returned to McKeesport, PA.
