Cheltenham Town are based in Gloucestershire in a town best known for horse racing rather than football. A schoolmaster called Albert Close White was instrumental in the club's formation in 1887.
2. At what stadium did Cheltenham Town make their permanent home in 1932?

Answer: Whaddon Road

Cheltenham Town played home games at a number of venues before moving into Whaddon Road in 1932. A record attendance for the venue was set in 1956 when 8,326 fans watched the team play Reading in an FA Cup tie. In the early 21st century, the stadium has had a number of corporate names, including the World of Smile Stadium, the LCI Rail Stadium and the Completely-Suzuki Stadium.

The Southern League was the strongest league outside of the Football League in English football prior to World War 2. Cheltenham Town were elected into the league in 1935. They would have to wait until season 1984-85 for their first title success, and this led to promotion to the Gola League, the forerunner of the National league, the fifth tier of English domestic football.

In season 1998-99, Cheltenham Town finished top of the Nationwide Conference, four points ahead of Kettering Town, and were promoted to the Football League, replacing Scarborough who finished bottom of Division Three. Their first season as a Football League team would be a very respectable one, finishing in eighth place, just two points behind the final play-off spot.

Cheltenham Town are nicknamed the Robins due to their red and white playing kit. Robins is a fairly common nickname in English football, with Bristol City and Swindon Town amongst other clubs using this moniker.

On 2nd November 1935, Cheltenham Town faced Chippenham Rovers in the 3rd qualifying round of the FA Cup, and thrashed them 12-0. Black and Jones scored four goals apiece in the rout. Cheltenham would eventually lose to Brighton and Hove Albion in the first round proper after a replay.

Grant McCann was a Northern Ireland footballer who had two loan spells at Cheltenham whilst a West Ham United player in the early 2000s. He would join Cheltenham permanently in 2003, making 155 league appearances and scoring 13 times. His form led him to be capped by his home nation, making his debut away to Malta in October, 2001.

Cheltenham Town finished the 2001-02 Division Three season in fourth place, just one point behind Mansfield Town for the last automatic promotion slot. In the play-off semi-finals, Cheltenham eliminated Hartlepool on penalties after two 1-1 draws. In the final, at The Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, on 6th May, 2002, they defeated Rushden & Diamonds 3-1 in front of 24,368 spectators.
10. Which former Cheltenham Town player was manager of the club when they won the League Two title in season 2020-21?

Answer: Michael Duff

Michael Duff played in 300 league games for Cheltenham Town between 1996 and 2004 before moving to Burnley. He returned to the club as manager in 2018, and led them to one of their greatest seasons in 2020-21. They finished the season two points ahead of Cambridge United to win the League Two title.

It was their first-ever Football League title. They finished the following season in a comfortable mid-table position in League One, before Duff departed the club to take over the managerial reins at Barnsley.

They were relegated back to League Two at the end of the next season, 2023-24 ... they were unable to recover from their disastrous start to the season (when they failed to score in their first 11 matches).
