The Crystal Palace was originally located in Hyde Park where it housed the Great Exhibition of 1851. Once the exhibition finished, the building was dismantled and reconstructed south of the Thames in Sydenham Hill. A football stadium was built there as well and was used as a venue for the F.A. Cup final between 1895 and 1914.

The owners wanted their own team to play at their stadium on a regular basis and Crystal Palace F.C. were founded in 1905. They would eventually settle further south in what is now the London Borough of Croydon.

Answer: Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace were forced to leave their original home in 1915 when the Admiralty needed the land for the armed forces. After a short stay at Herne Hill Aerodrome, they moved to a ground called The Nest in Selhurst. They moved into their permanent home, Selhust Park, in 1924, with Palace losing to Sheffield Wednesday in the opening match.

A stadium record crowd of 51,482 attended a match against Burnley in 1979.

On their formation in 1905, Crystal Palace applied to the Football League for membership but this was declined, so they joined the Southern League instead. In the early 20th century, the Southern league was the second strongest league in England, with members at the time including Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Portsmouth and Southampton. Palace finished as runners-up in 1913-14, with the league shutting down for the duration of World War 1 in 1915.

After a third place finish in season 1919-20, Palace were invited to join the newly-formed Third Division of the Football League.

Crystal Palace wore claret and sky blue shirts vbetween 1905 and 1973 apart from a spell between 1955 and 1962 when white shirts and black shorts were worn. A wholesale change came along in 1973 when red and blue were adopted as their permanent first-choice colours.

The majority of seasons have seen red and blue vertical stripes on their shirts, with an occasional season when a white shirt with a blue and red diagonal stripe has been worn.

When Malcolm Allison became manager of Crystal Palace in 1973, he decided to totally change the club's image. As well as adopting red and blue striped shirts (apparently based on Barcelona's shirts), he scrapped the old Glaziers nickname and replaced it with Eagles (apparently inspired by Benfica).

The club's badge had originally featured a phoenix which evolved into an eagle over the years, so this possibly is a more likely reason.

Season 1968-69 saw Crystal Palace finish the Division Two season as runners-up to Derby County which meant promotion to the top flight of English football for the first time. Their stay there lasted four seasons, mostly spent fighting against relegation.

They would next return to the top division in 1979, and would spend the next three decades or so yo-yoing between the top two tiers. Palace would eventually establish themselves as top flight regulars in season 2013-14.

Terry Venables took over as manager at Crystal Palace in 1976, when they were in Divsion Three and took them to Divsion One within three years. He left to manage Queens Park Rangers in 1980. He had a second, less successful. stint as manager of the club in 1998-99. Sam Allarcdyce had a short spell in charge at Palace in 2016-17 before taking the England job. Roy Hodgson took over the managerial reins in September 2016 and spent a solid, if unspectacular, four seasons at the helm. He returned to the club in 2023, before health issues led to him stepping down early the following year.

Bobby Robson managed three English clubs - Fulham, Ipswich and Newcastle - but was never manager of Crystal Palace.

Welshman Wayne Hennessey began his professional career with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2006 before Crystal Palace signed him in 2014. He made 132 appearances for Palace before joining Burnley in 2021. He won a total of 109 caps for the Wales national team, 55 of which coming during his time as a Palace player.

Crystal Palace went on a terrific F.A. Cup run in season 2024-25. They defeated Stockport County, Doncaster Rovers, Millwall and Fulham before seeing off Aston Villa in the semi-final. They began the final on May 17th as huge underdogs against Manchester City, but a single goal from Eberechi Eze was enough to send the trophy to south London for the first time.

In the 2025-26 UEFA Conference League, Crystal Palace had to negotiate a qualifier against Norwegians Fredrikstad to get into the league phase. They finished 10th out of 36 teams after the six-game league phase to reach the knockout phase. Victories on aggregate over Bosnians Zrinjski Mostar, AEK Larnaca of Cyprus, Italy's Fiorentina and Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine saw Palace reach the final in Leipzig. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the only goal of the game against Rayo Vallecano to secure the trophy for Palace.
