Locate the Cricket Ground Trivia Quiz

UK Cricket Grounds

The map shows some of the most well known cricket grounds of the UK. All you need to do is put the name of the ground next to the correct number. I've avoided using sponsor names, as these change so frequently, and information is valid in 2024.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Oval

Home to Surrey Cricket Club, The Oval is located in south London in an area called Kennington, in Lambeth. It dates from 1845 and has hosted test matches since 1880 when England played against their old foes, Australia. It is a regular venue for international matches including one-day games, T20 matches and women's international cricket.

The other famous London ground is the home of cricket, Lord's, the home ground of Middlesex County Cricket Club.
2. Nevil Road

Located in Bristol and home to Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. It is located in Ashley Down in north Bristol and has had various names during its time. Ownership has gone from the club to various other businesses and then bought back again. The name has changed to reflect the ownership and/or sponsors, but the name of the road is, at least, constant.

The ground has been used primarily for one day international matches although women's test cricket has been played at Bristol.
3. Old Trafford

Old Trafford is the name of two stadiums in Manchester, one a football ground and home to Manchester United and the other the cricket ground which is home to Lancashire Country Cricket Club. The names reflect the region of Manchester in which they are located and they are within walking distance of each other.

Of the venues which have hosted test matches, only The Oval has a longer history with Old Trafford holding its first, between England and Australia, in 1884. It is still on the list of grounds where all kinds of cricket matches are held.
4. The Rose Bowl

By contrast to most of the other grounds mentioned, the Rose Bowl is a new stadium dating only from 2001. It was built to replace the cramped ground in the middle of Southampton and is situated about five miles from the city. It is the home ground for Hampshire County Cricket Club who were established in 1863.

Despite being relatively new, the ground had to be expanded to enable test matches to be played there with the first taking place in 2011 between England and Sri Lanka. One day cricket began there rather earlier, with the first ODI (one day international) taking place in 2003.
5. Headingley

Headingley Cricket Ground is in Leeds, West Yorkshire, and is the home ground for Yorkshire Cricket Club. Established in 1890, the ground has been hosting test matches since 1899.

Some memorable feats have been achieved at Headingley, including the famous 1981 match when Ian Botham and Bob Willis snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the Ashes series against Australia. In 1999 Australia saved themselves from elimination in the ICC Cricket World Cup by chasing down a total of 271, before going on to win the tournament.
6. Trent Bridge

Located in the East Midlands of England, in West Bridgford, Trent Bridge is home to Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club. The city of Nottingham is on the other side of the River Trent which flows near the ground. Trent Bridge has been used for international matches since 1899 when a test match was played there between England and Australia.

As well as test matches, Trent Bridge is regularly used for one day matches including T20s. Sorry Aussies, but it is also where Stuart Broad, a Nottinghamshire player, took eight wickets for only fifteen runs in 2015 as Australia subsided to 60 all out.
7. Sophia Gardens

The only ground in the quiz which is in Wales, Sophia Gardens is the home of Glamorgan County Cricket Club. The ground is located in Cardiff and Glamorgan have been playing there since 1999. It began hosting international matches in 2009 with a test match between England and Australia being the first to be played. One day internationals were rather earlier, with the first being in 1999 when Australia played New Zealand in a Cricket World Cup match. England didn't play there until 2006.
8. New Road

Located in Worcester, New Road is a small ground by modern standards. It is home to Worcestershire Cricket Club. Its location is picturesque, on the banks of the River Severn and overlooked by Worcester Cathedral on the opposite bank. The ground regularly floods, though, and is sometimes unplayable.

Despite its size limitations, New Road has occasionally been chosen to stage one day internationals with the first being played in 1983 between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. It is mostly used for women's matches with both test and one day matches being played there.
9. Edgbaston

Situated in Birmingham and named for the area of that city in which it is located, Edgbaston is the home ground of Warwickshire Country Cricket Club. The stadium dates from 1882 and the first test match played there was between England and Australia in 1902. It is a regular venue for test matches in series between England and other countries.

Edgbaston was the venue for the final of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 when England lost to India. It is also where the first day/night match to be played in England, between England and West Indies in 2017, took place.
10. The Riverside

The Riverside Stadium is situated in Chester-le-Street, which is around five miles from the city of Durham and close to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It is a relatively new ground, completed in1995 after Durham County Cricket Club won promotion to the higher tier of the County Championship.

The new ground was a condition of the club's promotion. The investment was worthwhile as the ground has been a venue for international matches. The first test match took place in 2003 with England's opponents being Zimbabwe and one day matches are often hosted there too.
