Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dustin determines that the Upside Down is actually which of these?

Answer: A wormhole

While Dustin rushes to the roof in an attempt to stop Jonathan and Nancy from damaging whatever's on the roof of the Upside Down Hawkins Lab, Nancy fires her shotgun at the anomaly floating above their heads. What results is nothing good. The invisible orb turns out to be a swirling, but camouflaged sphere that opens into a blast of energy. Across the Upside Down, Hopper, El, and Kali watch as the resulting blast radiates out and strikes the perimeter walls.

Dustin and Steve wake up in the aftermath of the blast to realize that Dustin was catastrophically incorrect about his initial assessment. The thing they were looking for was never a shield generator nor was it dark magic of any kind. Vecna didn't even make it; science did. It's 'exotic matter', a single source of energy holding the giant wall together. And since Vecna didn't make the wall, he isn't on the other side of it. Nobody is. Steve has to ask what might be over there; Dustin believes it may be death. Everything they've known about the Upside Down has been dead wrong this whole time. The Upside Down isn't an other dimension; it's a wormhole-- a bridge between our world and another. If the bridge collapses, it will take everyone with it.

On the roof, the walls and floor start melting once again, and since Jonathan and Nancy have been knocked out by the blast, they don't realize as they start sinking into the building. At the church, the others watch the perimeter wall start to undulate before stopping altogether. When Steve's car is pulled through to the other side, it opens a vacuum, pulling everything nearby in through the hole. El, Kali, and Hopper are able to take cover before they spot a gate across the nearby cemetery, and using her powers, El is able to bring them close enough to pass through.
2. According to Robin's theory, Max was never in a coma, but instead locked in a trance.

Answer: True

In Hawkins, Erica and Murray stop by Mr. Clarke's house at five in the morning to wake him up and ask after a new telemetry tracker. He refuses outright, but changes his mind when he's informed that it's a life-or-death situation wherein Dustin's life hangs in the balance.

Max and Holly track their way back through Holly's memories and out the doorway into Henry's realm, passing back through the fields and woods and rushing back to Max's safe cave. He follows them, limping, to the edge of the canyon, and lets them know that if Holly refuses to rejoin him back at the house, he'll proceed with alternative means to kill Max.

The sun rises on November 6th and, at the Squawk, Joyce watches over a sleeping Will who, though he connected with the hive mind, seems to have been unable to come back out from it. Mike, Lucas, and Robin come to the conclusion that he must be operating in a similar way to Max. Robin says that all three of their 'missing' people-- Will, Max, and Holly-- are all unconscious somewhere, scattered in the Upside Down, and stuck in Vecna's trance. Their minds could all be in the same place, imprisoned in Vecna's mind.

Robin and Lucas decide to hop into Joyce's car and drive out to the hospital to watch over Max in case she is able to escape; Mike stays back with Joyce and Will.
3. Who, as is discovered, helped create the tunnels beneath Hawkins?

Answer: Will

Will contends with being trapped on the other side in his mind. Restrained by the power of the Upside Down, Henry meets him where he once trapped him and made him into his spy. Vecna reminds Will that he was his vessel and his builder all this time and, to Will's surprised, it was through Will that the tunnels under Hawkins were able to be built, carved out every night while he slept. It's finally time, he says, for his vessels to emerge and lead Earth to becoming a better world.

Will reminds Vecna that Max has one of his vessels, but Vecna is already aware of how he plans to smoke the fox from its den, and to do that, Will will be his spy again.

From the cave, Max concedes that there isn't much to do except wait to be rescued, but Holly doesn't like this idea. The two try to figure out why Henry can't come into the cave in the meantime. Max's theory is that the cave is representative of a memory that Henry doesn't want to face, but she doesn't quite know why. It gets Holly thinking-- they were able to pass through traumatic memories in their own minds, so by that logic, they might be able to do the same through Henry's. Out the canyon opening is miles and miles of sand and Max hasn't searched it all, so despite Max's objections, they head that way.
4. Hopper, El, and Kali are able to pass back through a gate into real Hawkins. They return to the Squawk via which means?

Answer: In a hearse

While waiting for something to happen, Mike ends up hearing a vehicle driving up to the Squawk from the distance and he and Joyce head out to find that it's a hearse being driven by Hopper, El, and new arrival Kali, having escaped successfully from the Upside Down through the cemetery gate. There's a lot to discuss, but most importantly, Will is still stuck in his trance, having been unconscious for a few hours. Joyce asks if El can find him and, in an attempt to do so, heads into the office and blocks out all light and sound. There's no way through, she realizes, since Will keeps slipping away. Hopper suggests using the sensory deprivation tank.

Mike and Hopper contemplate both the flesh wall and the missing group still in the Upside Down, but neither have answers. In fact, as Hopper notes, the whole thing is too much and too confusing; it all has to connect but there's a big, missing piece. Kali enters to tell the others that El is getting weaker, not stronger, and it leads to a big argument between her and Hopper with the former believing this doesn't end with killing Henry. She refuses to let this happen again.

Steve and Dustin try to figure out how much time they have left before the wormhole completely collapses, but Dustin doesn't have many answers since, as he theorizes, Nancy's shot didn't destroy all the exotic matter. After all, they weren't sucked into oblivion. The two of them head towards the roof with the walkie-talkie only to find the matter still active and levitating above.

Jonathan and Nancy are still alive, but they awaken to find themselves in a bad situation, on their backs in a room below the roof while the walls and ceiling melt down onto them. They head to the door, trudging through the rising goo, only to find that there's no escape and they're running out of time.
5. Which of these items, in Holly's possession, leads her and Max in the right direction of Henry's traumatic memory?

Answer: Spyglass

At Hawkins Memorial Hospital, Lucas and Robin rush into the building but Robin gets intercepted by Vickie at the elevator, leading the two to the inevitable talk. Security knows that Robin stole benzos during an earlier visit, and they're on high alert for her return. Robin has no choice but to tell everything at this point. Lucas, meanwhile, returns to Max's side and cranks up the volume of his Kate Bush tape.

Out in the desert, Max complains that they've searched too far, but Holly is convinced they'll find something. Taking out the spyglass she took from Henry's, she finds something odd about the shape in the lens cap-- it bears a coincidental shape to the mouth of the cave Max has been staying in.

In the Upside Down, Steve and Dustin attempt to climb to the roof but the stairs give way, stopping any chance of reaching the top. Steve and Nancy, meanwhile, bash at the door in an attempt to escape. It's another impulsive call that doesn't work in their favour since it opens a larger flood of melted liquid. There's nothing they can do but climb onto a table and cry for help, hoping Steve and Dustin hear them.
6. Max and Holly's search for a way out leads them to what unexpected spot, hidden in a desert valley?

Answer: A mine shaft

At Hopper's cabin, the team fills up El's sensory deprivation tub to prepare her for her next to-do, and Hopper catches Joyce by Will's side, regretting her decision to push him and trap him in Vecna's trance. She thought she was holding him back by not trusting him, but she now feels wrong. Hopper has to remind her that, as parents, they're not always going to make the right choice. It's not on her.

Mike and El have a moment to themselves as well and Mike asks for honesty towards their current situation. El is evasive towards whether or not they can even succeed, but soon enough, she gives in and reveals that the military is starting the program all over again, and all they need is Henry's blood. Since she has Henry's blood inside her, she's putting everyone at risk. Mike reminds her that this is all of their story to write, and they will get the opportunity to decide.

Holly and Max work to get the shape in the spyglass cap to line up with the cave entrance and Holly is the one who stumbles on the secret tunnel in the right spot, accidentally falling through the cover and nearly plummeting into a mine shaft. Max is able to grab her in the nick of time.

In the hospital, Robin and Vickie contemplate what to do next, especially now that Vickie knows the whole, crazy story. Vickie is most angry that Robin lied to her for so long and she's convinced that her girlfriend is on drugs, what with all of the talk about monsters and other dimensions. The conversation has to be cut short though, since the military is there to collect Robin.
7. Jonathan finally shows Nancy the engagement ring he got her. Do they decide to get married?

Answer: No

Steve searches and find a ladder in an attempt to keep climbing the melting stairwell, but as he places one down across the gap, Dustin yells at him to stop, pleading for him not to get himself killed. After Eddie's death, he doesn't want to lose Steve too. While Steve comforts him, the ladder falls away and plummets several storeys down.

In the locked room, Jonathan and Nancy continue screaming for help until it feels fruitless. Jonathan is the first to concede, fully believing that they aren't coming, and it prompts Nancy into being open and honest. The two trade barbs about each others' interests and it turns out cathartic; each of them holds resentment towards the other that they've never vocalized. Jonathan admits he never applied to Emerson, and Nancy admits that she knows. It's a consequence of not wanting to damage their relationship, but they both acknowledge that they're likely only together because of their shared trauma, and while they value it, it's equally suffocating.

Jonathan has to ask about Steve, and Nancy reconfirms that she never wanted to be with Steve. As much as he's a good friend, they never had the same values. Steve, for instance, wants six kids. He knows what he wants. She doesn't.

Jonathan reveals that he has an engagement ring in the John Coltrane cassette case in his jacket pocket, having smuggled it into Hawkins through Murray. In a decision of complete honesty, he proposes to Nancy with a "Will you *not* marry me?", believing that he tried to convince himself that engagement would fix everything. The two of them know it wouldn't. She accepts his unproposal. They love each other, but it's not right to stay together, and they can both agree on that.

As they toss the ring across the room, it falls to the solid ground beside them, the melting walls having solidified during their talk.
8. Vickie is forced to believe the truth behind Robin's story when she encounters which of these in the hospital?

Answer: Demogorgons

Holly and Max descend into the mine shaft and follow a trail of blood into the darkness, following the memory and the sound of someone in pain deeper in the tunnel. What they find is a man with a gun, there holding a case and protecting it with his life. They don't realize that they've been followed by the memory of a young Henry Creel who, in trying to help the man, was shot in the hand in that moment. Henry raced forward to knock the gun from the man's hand and, fortunately, succeeded, but in an effort to protect himself, he beat the man to death with a rock. While Max tries to dig a path through the tunnel, following the sound of Kate Bush on the other side, Holly watches as young Henry opens the case.

El sinks into the sensory deprivation tub, vowing to bring Will home as Hopper closes the lid, and when she emerges into the dark unconscious, she locates Will and asks him to show him where he is. Before he can, he's beset upon by tentacles, snaking in through the darkness to find him. It allows her to find where he is, trapped where Vecna left him in the Upside Down. While she's able to free him from his bindings, it isn't the end of the effort they need to take. Will's knowledge is enough to help Vecna locate Max's body in the real world, and with that, El and Will both awaken from Vecna's trance to inform the others, though it might be too late.

In the real world, Lucas watches as Max's heart rate spikes on the monitor. Robin and Vickie attempt to deal with the military men sent to retrieve Robin, but their apprehending is a short-lived effort. Vickie is the first to see the Demogorgon heading around the corner.
9. Karen Wheeler is able to save the group in Hawkins General by placing which of these into an industrial dryer?

Answer: An oxygen tank

As the Demogorgons aim themselves at the military officers in the hospital to retrieve Robin, Robin and Vickie run for safety, soon realizing that the creatures aren't there to cause carnage; they're there for something else. Robin hops onto the PA system to alert Lucas, telling him to get Max's unconscious body and run to meet them in the basement in staff parking. Downstairs, Karen Wheeler awakens in her bed to hear the commotion and she unhooks herself from her IV.

By the time the Demogorgons reach the hospital room, Lucas is already gone with Max and the tape player in his arms. He makes it to the elevator and heads down to the basement just in time to meet up with Robin and Vickie, the four of them taking refuge in the hospital's laundry room to find themselves cornered. Robin realizes they'll need to turn off the tape player if they want to have a chance, but Lucas is certain Max is coming back.

Max and Holly, meanwhile, find a small enough crevice to crawl through, managing to pass through to the other side to follow the sound of Kate Bush out into the alien landscape.

With nowhere left to go, the group in the laundry room waits for the inevitable only to be saved at the last minute by the sound of a dryer in operation in the adjacent room, and when the Demogorgons head over to investigate, they get a front row seat for the explosion that destroys the appliance. Karen, having heard their announcement and headed to the basement, reveals herself, having placed an oxygen tank into the dryer to stop the threat.
10. Before Holly and Max part ways, Max tells Holly to meet the others in what location in the Upside Down?

Answer: The Wheeler house

Max and Holly, at long last, find their way to the gate in the darkest part of Henry's mindscape to find Lucas carrying Max's body on the other side. Max has to be honest with Holly though, as she realizes that the path out of this world leads to her body, not hers. Holly will have to find her own way. Max never needed Kate Bush to get out, just something powerful and meaningful to connect her to her home. What makes her feel safe, she says, is Holly the Heroic, who's been inside her the whole time.

Max has to remind Holly that, this whole time, despite what she thinks, she's stood up in the face of horrible things. Holly was the one who went into the woods when Henry told her there were dangerous things out there; she was the one who followed her into the cave; she went back to Henry's house despite all that; she found the tunnels. Max could never have made it out without Holly finding the way through Camazotz. Holly the Heroic saved her.

To Holly's surprise, her own gate appears behind her, guiding the way back to her body in the Upside Down. Max doesn't knows where she'll wake up, but the Upside Down is just like Hawkins. If Holly can make it back to her house there, the others will find her there. After one last hug, the two head in opposite directions, both finally bound for their escape from Camazotz.
