Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who, of these, was the first to encounter Vecna in the Upside Down, back in 1983?

Answer: Will

On November 12, 1983, trapped in Castle Byers in the Upside Down, Will Byers was startled by the sound of a figure in the darkness only to find himself face-to-face with a Demogorgon. Forced to leave his hiding spot and taking to one of the trees stretching high above the fog below, he managed to evade capture by that creature just long enough to get knocked unconscious and snagged by a different one.

Dragged to a church, Will was placed into the clutches of Vecna himself who, restraining him to the wall, used his abilities to infect a part of himself within the young boy, intending to leverage him for the fight yet to unfold.
2. What is the name of the radio program that Steve and Robin host?

Answer: The Squawk

On November 3, 1987, Holly Wheeler calls everyone in the house down to the kitchen for breakfast. With the Wheeler family living alongside the Byers, it's a full house, and yet none of them seem to notice that Holly sees a shadowy figure that she appears to be able to interact with.

While Mike, Will, and Holly get on their bikes and ride off towards school, Mike turns on the radio to WSQK and the 'Morning Squawk', a program hosted by Steve and Robin from the old radio tower. While Robin announces the celebration of her 500th radio show (and denounces the old owner, who fled Hawkins when things got bad), she recaps the situation at hand. When the ground opened up, Hawkins was put into military quarantine; the army covered the fissures in the earth with giant, metal strips; they set up a control zone, called the MAC-Z, in the middle of town with another gate to the Upside Down.

As Robin dedicates a song to Vickie, the signal for the station starts to go haywire, leading the pair to work to get it back up and running consistently. Steve radios out to Dustin who, just heading in for his school day, tells him to read the manual he left. He's got more important things to take care of.
3. Who appears on missing posters in Hawkins High School?

Answer: Jane Hopper

At Hawkins High School, Dustin, wearing a Hellfire Club t-shirt, gets accosted by some of the school bullies for daring to bear its satanic imagery. They only stop when Lucas arrives, since he's been branded a traitor to the Hawking High basketball team, and it helps more when Mike and Will arrive on the scene, outnumbering the troublemakers.

The boys tell Dustin that he needs to stop provoking others, but he doesn't think it's his fault. Despite this, they realize they need to listen to Hopper and keep their heads down, especially as they prepare for their next 'crawl'-- a session in which they proceed into the Upside Down hunting for Vecna.

Eleven, meanwhile, is in training in the woods. While the military pursues anyone who might turn out to be El, she's actually in hiding under Hopper and Joyce's supervision, learning to master her powers. She hasn't been seen by the public in several months and she's pushing herself, hard, to be strong enough.
4. Murray manages to sneak intel into Hawkins via which means?

Answer: A grocery delivery truck

At the radio tower, Steve and Robin are joined by Nancy and Jonathan to hunt down the answers in the manual that Dustin indicated and it leads them to, unfortunately, realize they need to climb to the top of the structure to deal with the faulty remote radio head. It unearths a bit of competitive spirit in both Steve and Jonathan and, after Steve shuts down the power to the tower, the pair race up the ladders to fix the device.

At the same time, Murray pulls up with his 'grocery delivery', arriving at the tower with telemetry tags, bullets, shells, and grenades (amongst other things). Most importantly he comes with documents for Nancy that indicate the military's next actions; they plan to execute a 'burn' that evening, and that means loading a lot of resources and cargo into the Upside Down. It'll give Hopper a two-hour window for a crawl, and that might be just what they need to find Vecna.
5. Robin provides coded messages during the song "Upside Down" by which artist?

Answer: Diana Ross

While the boys worry after Dustin and his recent behaviour (and especially the fact that he wants to resurrect the Hellfire Club), none of them seem particularly interested in being honest with him. Fortunately, they're interrupted from having to explain themselves when their radio cracks back on and Robin hits the airwaves with a signal indicating covert news to the tune of Diana Ross' "Upside Down". Her codes manage to get into the hands of the boys in the high school cafeteria and Hopper and Joyce, out in the training yard, and with that, they prepare for the crawl.

While the group in the radio tower heads to a secret tunnel beneath the building, Hopper, Joyce, and El get into the tunnels in the woods, and the boys head to the forest to run over their plans. Hopper will be the Upside Down while a contingent will be following in the Rightside Up. They can't lose Hopper with the telemetry tracker. The catch is that they've tried searching, zone-by-zone, for dozens of visits. No one's found Vecna; El can't sense him and neither can Will. But none of them can shake off the vision he gave to Nancy, and that's why they have to keep looking.

As the boys send up a cheer, Will finally has a new sensation-- one that has him looking into the sky and losing his balance. They realize that Vecna may be close.
6. Dr. Kay, who leads the military's new initiatives towards the Hawkins phenomena, operates her lab in which spot?

Answer: The Upside Down

At school, Holly has a horrible sensation of dizziness when she's spun on a carousel in the yard. Before she goes in with the rest of the children, she spies a familiar face near the fence and speaks to him, alone. Her teacher, noticing her speaking to no one, takes note of the eerie incident.

In some of Hawkins' newly-created labs, Dr. Kay receives word that her forces have failed, yet again, to locate Jane Hopper. It's a particular disappointment, even if she's spending her time dissecting creatures from the Upside Down. Her research will plateau, however, without the girl. In the meantime, she'll work on the other side of the gate in the walled encampment her team has created.

Hopper, Joyce, and El make their way through the tunnels and to Hopper's old cabin where El, convinced that she ran her training course fast enough, begs to come along for the crawl. Hopper won't hear it though since he's worried about her safety not only from the creatures in the Upside Down, but the soldiers hunting for her. If she wants to come along, she can do so from the bathtub. He wants her safe until the very last minute and not at risk on a recon mission.
7. Holly refers to the figure that only she can see by what name?

Answer: Mr. Whatsit

Mike goes to pick Holly up at school only to find her sitting alone in the hall, evidently there waiting for her mother to finish speaking to her teacher about the incident in the yard. He deduces that it has to do with her 'mystery friend' again-- someone she refers to as Mr. Whatsit-- and she says he's only there to help by protecting her. Mr. Whatsit tells her about the monsters in Hawkins and that they're there to eat kids like her. He reassures her that monsters aren't real, but that's an obvious lie. She's scared.

Funnily enough, Mike says, he's able to overcome his fears of whatever's going on by using Mike the Brave and joining his friends on 'dungeon crawls'. He is, of course, referring to "Dungeons & Dragons". He recommends that maybe she just needs her own Holly the Heroic, and he was going to wait a few years, but he thinks she's ready to learn how to play. Handing her a miniature he's kept on him for a while, he lets her know that she's a cleric with divine powers who can protect the party from evil spirits, and cooler than that, she can teleport people with Dimension Door.
8. Which of these does Dustin find on Eddie's grave at Roane Hill Cemetery?

Answer: A dead snake

At the hospital, Lucas and Will stop in to check on a still-comatose Max, and while Will thinks they might get lucky finding Vecna that night, Lucas is distracted. When Will leaves to get a Coke, Lucas plays a Kate Bush tape on the cassette player and leaves it running. Out in the hall, Will nearly ends up running into Robin but instead witnesses her stopping by to change that evening's plans with Vickie. He stumbles upon the two kissing in one of the patient rooms before running away.

At the cemetery, Dustin rides over to Eddie's grave to pay his respects only to find the corpse of the school snake-- one he left in a bully's locked earlier that day-- laid on the ground next to the graffiti-laden headstone. He quickly finds himself surrounded by the guys from the basketball team and attempts to put up a fight only to get knocked to the ground and beaten to unconsciousness.

At the same time, Dustin's walkie is going off; the others are looking for him in the few hours left before the crawl. At the radio tower, the others have no idea where he is. Mike and El chat on the roof of the Squawk and wonder if everything happening in Hawkins is getting to them. All they know is that they might, finally, catch their break, and after that, they could finally live happily ever after, whatever that might mean for them. Mike believes that could be real for them, much to El's joy.
9. Who is the only person to head into the Upside Down during the crawl?

Answer: Hopper

Arming himself up, Hopper grabs a transponder tag and Steve, out in the van, calibrates Dustin's satellite receiver to get the signal. With Dustin missing in action, someone else needs to fill his role, and though Will is eager to step in, Joyce refuses to let him, instead sending an uncertain Jonathan out in the van with Steve. The guys drive out while Mike and Lucas head off on their bikes and Hopper jumps into the tunnels, heading topside again when he reaches the MAC-Z.

Eventually, the moment comes. As four trucks of supplies enter the MAC-Z, burners move towards the gate to clear a path into the Upside Down, and when the coast appears clear enough, Hopper heads through the smoke and hauls himself, covertly, into the back of one of the vehicles. None of the military operatives notices a thing, and the route seals behind them.

In the van, Jonathan snags the signal and he and Steve floor it to give chase in the Rightside Up. At the Squawk, Joyce communicates directly with Hopper, letting him know they've got a read on the tracker and await his escape from the trucks, but the plan goes awry when the military vehicles come to a crashing stop.
10. Will has a vision of a Demogorgon passing through Upside Down Hawkins bound for what destination?

Answer: The Wheeler House

Although the group at the Squawk worries that the military is aware of Hopper's presence, it doesn't appear that this is completely the case, and they have little to do but wait for next steps. In the Upside Down, Hopper reorients himself and keeps his hands on his gun.

That's when all Hell breaks loose. While Will finds himself affected by another vision, something attacks the convoy from out front, and the activity jams the electrical equipment in the radio station and the chase van. The driver of Hopper's truck puts his foot to the pedal to reverse from the threat as a Demogorgon dispatches the remaining men. Hopper is nicked by a stray bullet before the vehicle careens off the road and hits a tree while, at the same time, the power blows at the Squawk. He ends up the only survivor of the encounter, seemingly stranded in the gloom there with no connection to the others.

In the Rightside Up, Will has a vision of a Demogorgon racing through the forest until it reaches the Wheeler house. He comes to just in time to tell the others of its destination. Nancy and El head out into the night in an attempt to get to her family first.

At home, Holly makes herself a necklace in her room, attaching Holly the Heroic to it as a pendant, while her parents argue in the kitchen about her mysterious friend. While Ted heads outside to hit a few drives into the woods, Karen pours herself another glass of wine. Neither of them are aware that something is breaking through a portal in Holly's ceiling until it's too late.
