Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Henry informs his captured children that there is a world beyond their own. He describes it as which of these?

Answer: A world of light

Will Byers, having just destroyed the Demogorgons that emerged into the real world, is awakened from his fugue state by his mother. Having just saved the lives of his friends and family, he reminds them that they're still up against an insurmountable threat. Vecna has all the kids; none of them made it out of Hawkins in time, and he could have stopped it if he knew his full capabilities. As the military flies in with their helicopters, he, Joyce, and Mike head into the tunnels.

The children, meanwhile, are placed into Vecna's sanctum only to awaken in a bright and sunny field, met by Mr. Whatsit. He lets them know that they're safe at his house, bringing them to reunite with Holly, and he gives them the same instruction not to venture into the woods. None of them notice Max watching from the tree line.

The twelve kids are informed that an evil darkness is spreading, like the Black Thing in "A Wrinkle in Time", and soon it will cover the world. Henry believes he has a way to defeat it though, and through that he lets them know that there is another world beyond theirs where they can find the light. These twelve children, he says, have powers, and they can work together to draw the new world to theirs, saving everyone from the darkness. They will save everyone and be heroes.

Holly has to ask if he'll bring more children, but he reassures her that he has no need to leave them again. Tomorrow, it begins.
2. El and Hopper escape the military compound in the Upside Down with Kali. What do they leave behind?

Answer: A projection

Will, Mike, and Joyce come across Lucas in the tunnels, finding that he's been wounded by the Demogorgon. They bring him up to speed about his powers and return to the surface near the radio tower, but they all realize that Lucas' theories, about everything ending on November 6th, the day Will was taken, might be coming to pass. Joyce reasons that there may be a way to connect Will to the hive mind's powers again, but it would mean needing a way in to strike directly at Vecna. She admits to wrongly underestimating her son, but Vecna did too.

In the Upside Down, Dr. Kay has her men open the door to the containment chamber keeping Eight subdued only to find that Eleven and Hopper have seemingly vanished. It doesn't take long before she realizes that Eight is nothing more than a projection; all of them have managed to disappear. The truth is that Eight is with El and Hopper in an army vehicle heading away from the compound.

They manage to locate Steve's Beamer, stuck in the perimeter wall, and head out on foot from there, and it's then that El takes the opportunity to tell Hopper off for even considering donning a bomb to bring down the compound. She chastises him for planning to die, but the argument comes to a halt when they find the nearby church empty, the other group having left to follow a lead.
3. What does Dustin believe is hidden in the Upside Down's version of Hawkins Lab?

Answer: A shield generator

Arriving at the Upside Down's version of the Hawkins Labs, Jonathan, Nancy, Steve, and Dustin let themselves in. Dustin says that they're there looking for whatever's creating the shield around Hawkins; something made of dark magic is keeping the barrier up, and by triangulating their location, they can safely assume that the source of this energy is in the lab. It may simply be that their destroying of that shield generator, whatever it may be, is the only thing blocking them from saving Holly. They split up into duos and go searching.

In Henry's house, while all of the other kids play through the rooms, Holly finds herself distracted. She manages to sneak out of the house and tell Max everything, but it turns out that she's been followed out by Derek. Their mood only changes when he proves he knows the whole situation, having been working with the group in the real world, and once this becomes apparent, Holly realizes they can use him, not to enact an escape, but to distract Vecna in the way that only Derek can.
4. In order to reconnect Will to the hive mind, Lucas suggests connecting a Demogorgon to the radio station's electricity. His idea was inspired by which of these?

Answer: A microwave

At the Squawk, Joyce goes over the plan: They need to get Will close to the hive mind and, once he is, he jacks back into it and goes directly after Vecna with one blow. Robin and Murray say it's a great plan to placate her, but it seems like a bit of a longshot since, after all, they need to find Vecna. Joyce reasons that they could attempt to refashion their telemetry tracker to find Hopper and the others, but Dustin hand-built the original.

Before the group thinks on it further, they all decide to have something to eat. Both Lucas and Erica come to conclusions at the same time. Erica notes that while Dustin is MIA, Mr. Clarke, who created their AV Club, could build a tracker. Lucas, meanwhile, while heating up popcorn, recalls Billy in the sauna and how the heat of it powered him up when Vecna inhabited his body. If they take a dead Demogorgon and use the power running through the radio station, they can create a conduit through to the hive mind themselves. Joyce acknowledges that they can try both plans. One might work.
5. According to Kali, what did it appear that Dr. Kay needed her for?

Answer: Her blood

Steve and Dustin start to travel through the labs together despite the fact that they aren't the most eager to spend more time at each others' throats. They end up making their way down through the corridors to the common area where Eleven cast Henry through the first portal. It's not where they need to be, but it is particularly enlightening. The pair end up splitting up when it's clear they aren't willing to be on the same page.

Jonathan and Nancy, meanwhile, take a different route, worrying that Dustin might be wrong on this excursion as the lab seems empty. It gives the couple a chance to talk, but this leads to an inevitable argument as well. Jonathan is candid about the whole situation; he's afraid they won't survive if they're not a team, but Nancy claims they're still a team. Neither of them believes the other is honest. Unfortunately, the chat about their relationship has to be put on hold when Jonathan stumbles upon an unexpected locked door which, when opened, leads to a stairwell of melted walls.

While Hopper tries to reach the others on the walkie-talkie, Eleven and Kali reconnect in the church. Eleven begs Kali to help her kill Henry, but Kali is hesitant, unbelieving that they can put a stop to anything and live happy lives. When the military found Kali and killed her friends, they took her and imprisoned her against her will. Dr. Kay, she believes, was hired to torture her. She needed her blood for her experiments, and she's not quite sure what it all led to. Eventually, she knew that the only way out was death, as what she found during an attempt at escape was the most horrifying of all.
6. Derek Turnbow is asked to create a distraction, which he's able to accomplish by doing which of the following?

Answer: Walking into the woods

At Henry's house, Derek plays the part he needs to to create a distraction, choosing his moment to walk past the kids playing outside and towards the woods, much to their dismay (as Mr. Whatsit specified that they should not attempt to enter them). Naturally, the kids tell Henry immediately. Max and Holly aren't too concerned with Derek's safety; as long as he makes it to the cave, he'll be safe. They just need Henry to take the bait. In the meantime, they need to find the exit by following the trail of Holly's memories to the night she was captured. Using this, they would escape Camazotz.

At the Squawk, the team in Hawkins gathers their tools and sets to work dismantling what they need to put their plan into action. Out on the roof of the building under the tower, Robin thanks Will for saving her life, but he thanks her instead, saying that her talk with him about Tammy and her life is what motivated him to open himself to who he is. Robin reveals that what it really took for her to tell the truth about herself was to tell Steve first. They were injected with truth serum by Russians at the time, sure, but saying it out loud helped lift a weight off her back. If she hadn't done it, she wouldn't have talked to Vickie and she wouldn't have talked to him.
7. Dustin and Steve get into a fistfight with one another, inadvertently breaking which of these in the process?

Answer: A walkie-talkie

As they commence their search for the route to Holly's memories, Max suggests that what they're looking for will be well-hidden, but when they head to the field where Holly awakened, finding a door, standing right in the middle of a clearing, is actually quite easy. The two proceed without caution; after all, it's just a memory and can't hurt them. Holly is able to direct them from memory to memory, eventually landing on her first meeting with Henry in the school library. The two were able to speak on her copy of "A Wrinkle in Time". It's the best route they have.

In the Upside Down, Steve and Dustin appear to have no results from their search, and worse, Steve blames Dustin for the situation they're in, going so far as to claim that Eddie got himself killed because he wanted to play the hero. The argument leads to a fistfight and a broken walkie-talkie before Steve declares that he's done. As Steve marches off though, Dustin stumbles upon a hidden room-- an old office once used by Dr. Brenner-- and its contents corroborate his initial calculations. He was right; the lab is at the epicenter of something.

Jonathan and Nancy continue through the melted halls elsewhere in the lab and Jonathan realizes that unlike the rest of the Upside Down, there are no spores in the air. It's not long before they start finding the bodies of soldiers melted through the walls and floor.
8. What did Kali find when she attempted to escape the government compound in the Upside Down?

Answer: Pregnant women

Kali continues to recount her story to Eleven, noting that she never knew how close she was to making it out on her own until she was rescued, but what she encountered in the lab stopped her in her tracks. She was ten yards away from the exit when she instead stumbled upon a side room and the reason as to why she was there, providing her blood. There, on cold slabs, the scientists were infusing pregnant woman and their unborn children with the samples drawn from Kali elsewhere in the compound, and it was killing them. She could only theorize that they were attempting to replicate the experiments that created El, Kali, and the others.

It was never drugs that gave them their powers. It was Henry.

Kali realized that her blood wasn't working as effectively as Henry's, and that's why both government projects were failures. Only one was truly like him-- Eleven. It's why Dr. Kay is so desperate to find her; it's to create more. There are no happy endings, Kali says.
9. Is Will able to reconnect with the hive mind as a result of the plan at the radio tower?

Answer: Yes

Derek, heading through the woods, ends up getting lost on his own and, unfortunately, found by Henry with Max's map in hand. Henry threatens to kill Derek's entire family, showing them apparitions of their bodies, before setting out.

In Hawkins, Joyce, Mike, and Lucas arrive with the dead Demogorgon and, on Robin's prompting, stake it to the roof of the building beneath the radio tower, treating it as though it were a science project. Will thanks his mother for trusting him. They may have one dangerous shot, but it could be worth it. When Robin cranks up the power, to all of their surprise, it works. Will is able to infiltrate the hive mind, travel into Vecna's realm, and see through Derek's eyes as he rejoins the other lost children. She's not with them, but she is with Max, much to Lucas' shock. And Vecna is on their trail.

At this point, Max and Holly are deep in a chain of Holly's memories, recounting what Holly remembers moment-by-moment so that they can figure out exactly what they're looking for. Before long, they locate the moment at which Holly was attacked and collected by the Demogorgon. Max knows it means they're close to the final memory. Again, there's no reason for her to be truly afraid since it means they're almost home.

Watching the events in the Wheeler household back, Holly wonders why she couldn't do anything to save her family, but Max suggests that things have changed in that short time. There's little time to discuss this though, since right through the front door of the house, leading out from the memory, is the exit. That's when Vecna finds them.
10. Who finds the anomaly atop Hawkins Lab in the Upside Down?

Answer: Jonathan and Nancy

Once Vecna reveals himself, he moves to stop the girls' escape from Holly's memory, grabbing and choking Max while Holly can only watch on. In the real world, her heart rate begins to drop, nearly flatlining her, but that's when Will is able to locate them, hidden away on the other side. using his ability, he infiltrates Vecna's mind and restrains him, breaking his leg in half and allowing Max to be released from his grip. Through Vecna, Will is able to yell to Max, telling her they need to run; she only has so much time before Vecna mends his leg, reconstitutes himself, and expels Will from the hive mind.

Will is blasted back in the attack and, in the aftermath, Robin cranks the power on the radio tower to the maximum.

In the Upside Down, Nancy and Jonathan emerge on the roof, passing through the melted corridors to find a similarly frightening scene. Looking up into the sky, Nancy shines her flashlight to find an anomaly floating around them. Something is there. Jonathan throws a pipe at it to find that it's a massive, invisible orb.

In Brenner's office, Dustin pores over the scientist's notes and makes a terrifying discovery. As Jonathan radios in to say they've found the shield generator, Dustin fumbles with the broken walkie-talkie in an effort to prevent the others from doing anything rash. Jonathan can't hear the message in full, however, and with the two of them out of range, it leaves Nancy to load her shotgun. It's the wrong move. It was never a shield generator and it was never dark magic, and if they destroy it, they could all die.

Jonathan asks Nancy if she's sure about shooting the anomaly. She's not, but she does it anyways.
