Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Neither Hopper nor El seem to be able to break through the massive wall in the Upside Down.

Answer: True

Try as they might with both Hopper's weapons and El's powers, neither of them can make a real dent in the massive wall surrounding Upside Down Hawkins before it seals right back up again. El stubbornly says that she closed the gate, so she can open the wall, but Hopper reasons that they don't even know if Holly is actually on the other side with the trail having gone cold.

The two are interrupted by an unfortunate sound on the horizon-- army vehicles drive their direction with a sonic dish aimed directly towards them. It's enough to stop El in her tracks.
2. Mr. Whatsit tells Holly that under no circumstances should she be looking around in which of these spots?

Answer: The woods

Joyce, meanwhile, rushes around searching for Will and Robin on the walkie-talkie and she finally comes across them riding their bikes back to the Squawk. She gets them to load their things into the car before she decries their choice to defy her plan, but Will suggests they don't have time to play it safe. By heading out, he and Robin discovered he could tap back into the hive mind, and it gave him the insight that Vecna plans to take more kids. And they have to act fast because he knows the next target: Holly's classmate and bully, Derek Turnbow.

Elsewhere, Holly has breakfast with Mr. Whatsit who reassures her that when her parents are finally healed at the hospital, they'll join them in the safety of his house. The only solace they have, for the time being, is that she's protected from the monsters while she's with him. Besides, they'll be busy preparing for Derek's arrival, much to her disappointment. He departs, insisting he'll be gone for most of the day, during which she'll have free run of the house. She must promise, however, not to go out into the woods under any circumstances.
3. Which of these alerts Lt. Akers' men to Hopper and El's presence in the Upside Down?

Answer: A knife

The military arrives at the wall and phones in their location before taking a reconnaissance break, unknowing that El is suffering a short distance away, a consequence of their sonic transmission. Hopper, watching from his hiding spot, realizes his grave mistake though-- he left his knife plunged into the wall. Lt. Akers realizes almost immediately that it's not one of their weapons, has his men swivel the antenna around, and closes in.

Hopper fires the minute he sees that their position has been compromised but, naturally, this results in retaliatory shots from the military who, at the same time, don't relent on the satellite. Hopper tosses two grenades over the barricade before, finally, taking out the sonar dish, and it gives El the opportunity to swoop in, stop the men in their tracks, and take Akers captive.
4. Part of the group's plan to protect Derek Turnbow involves extracting him and his family from his house and bringing him where?

Answer: To an abandoned farm

The boys return to the Squawk in their van in time to see Nancy, Mike, and Lucas arriving right behind them, and they reunite just in time for Robin to usher them all in for the bad news. Though Will's powers are leading them in the right direction, they know that Derek Turnbow is the next kid in Vecna's sights, a realization that came when he saw through Derek's eyes at the school. And with Nancy and Will's intel in-hand, they know that Vecna has been appearing to the children as a friend with the intent to earn their trust.

Per the plan that they create, the group agrees to wait in a van by the Turnbow house and, when the time is right, nab Derek, blindfold him, and leave him at the abandoned McCorkle Farm where Vecna can't locate him. Even Joyce has to agree that this isn't the time to play it safe, but Dustin notes it doesn't help anyone and it doesn't find their missing people; it just buys them, and Derek, a bit more time.

Mike is the one that realizes there could be something good to the Derek plan. They need to recruit someone who the Turnbow family trusts to get someone in on the inside. That person can knock the family out, safely, with sleeping pills and they can move in to intercept the Demogorgons with traps, from Murray, laid out. If they can get a tracker on a Demogorgon, they're in perfect shape to follow it back to its lair, and Vecna, in the van.
5. Who does the group ask to sedate the Turnbow Family?

Answer: Erica

Holly, alone at Mr. Whatsit's house, ends up having an uncannily good time seemingly safe and sound, embarking on a number of activities-- from baking a cake to watching TV to trying on dresses-- while her host is out for the day. She ends up finding her way into Mr. Whatsit's bedroom to find his Boy Scout belongings when the front doorbell rings. She presumes it's Derek and calls him out for ringing so many times, but when she actually answers, no one's at the door. Something is in the mailbox though-- a message from Henry saying that he needs her help, a map with an X on it asking her to meet across the woods next to a wall of rocks, and a compass.

In the Upside Down, the army sends reinforcements to the wall with Lt. Col. Sullivan at the helm. El and Hopper are long-gone though, having hauled Lt. Akers with them, in a military humvee, to a new hiding spot elsewhere in town. El wonders if, maybe, Akers knows how to get through the wall, but it's not something they can find out until he regains consciousness. Hopper is more concerned with the timing of the next supply convoy since it's their only way out. They talk about compromise for one another's goals in the Upside Down before Akers starts making noise.

Erica, in a science class about wormholes, manages to get away from the lesson despite being in the front row for an otherwise interesting lecture to speak to Lucas and Mike. They briefly explain what they need her to do, but the problem is that she doesn't have an in. Tina Turnbow used to be her best friend, but they're now arch-enemies (and have been for twelve days). Lucas isn't able to convince her to help, but Mike notes that they're really looking to save Holly. That's enough to sway her opinion, fortunately.
6. Murray, at one point, smuggled an engagement ring into Hawkins in which of these?

Answer: A cassette tape

Robin and Will ride out to Hawkins Memorial Hospital for two reasons-- the first being that she wants to visit Vickie and the second being that one of the patients she uses as an excuse to visit has a stash of benzos they plan to use for their plan later in the evening. The problem is that if Robin runs into Vickie, which she nearly does, then she'll have to contend with breaking their already-remade date plans that evening. Fortunately, they're able to get the meds without drawing attention.

Murray arrives at the abandoned farmhouse with a haul of unique items-- everything from a child-sized CPR doll to 3,000 feet of barbed wire-- while the group sets out the traps. Dustin finds Steve clearing out the radio van, lightening the load for a hopefully inevitable chase with a Demogorgon. Instead of helping Steve out, Dustin instead punches a hole into the roof of Steve's car-- it's just a faster vehicle.

In the barn, Nancy hollows out a shotgun shell and packs the telemetry tracker inside. Even though Murray is certain it won't work, Nancy implores that they test the theory, bringing the shotgun out back and firing it into a bag of cement to make sure it survives the blast. At the same time, Murray takes the opportunity to ask Jonathan if he's proposed to her yet. Somehow, it's not the time. He has the ring, waiting in a delivered John Coltrane cassette, waiting to be proposed with.
7. Lt. Akers willingly gives up information about the military base in the Upside Down to avoid being harmed by El.

Answer: False

With Lt. Akers tied to the inside of a bus in the Upside Down, Hopper and El are able to come in and try to extract information about the fleshy wall. Akers attempts to downplay his role with the military, but Hopper sees through it pretty easily, especially when he brings up the helicopter crash in the desert several months back.

The conversation hits a different level when Hopper reveals he knows about Dr. Kay, a consequence of having El actively rooting around in Akers' mind from another location. She's able to see exactly where the military base is on Gable Ridge Road, and when Akers realizes the extent of El's capabilities, he reveals that Kay is there specifically looking to learn more about El. Lt. Col. Sullivan and his men have one more month to locate her before they're replaced.

El, meanwhile, finds a corridor in Akers' mind and follows the route to an unmarked, vault-like door at the end. Akers refuses to say what's in that room and he holds back from letting her see what it is, but El refuses to let this stop her. She destroys the door, understanding that the harmful signal is pulsing from behind it stronger than she's ever encountered it, and she comes to the realization the military is likely keeping Vecna within their base.
8. The Turnbows end up sedated because they ingest benzos that have been baked into which of these?

Answer: A pie

In Mr. Whatsit's house, Holly struggles with whether or not she should follow Henry's note, at odds because it directly contradict's Henry's request not to go into the woods. While she ponders, she takes off her necklace, reminding herself about what Mike said about being 'Holly the Heroic' and finally determining that she should go. She grabs a cloak and a satchel, not realizing how much she looks like the miniature, and treks into the forest.

In Hawkins, Erica arrives at the Turnbow house just in time for dinner, offering up a pie and an apology to Tina. It's an easy-enough act. The real struggle comes after dinner when everyone at the dinner table eats the pie except Tina, who's watching what she eats and feels as though Erica might be trying to set her up. It's kind of the truth. By the time the Turnbow parents are knocked out and Derek has collapsed at the table, Erica has no choice but to inject Tina with an injectable sedative.
9. Does the Demogorgon even show up to the Turnbow house?

Answer: Yes

With the Turnbows out cold, the gang loads into their garage and gets to work preparing their traps. After closing all the drapes, covering the Turnbows' heads with pillowcases, and dragging them out to the van for transport, some stay behind and move the furniture while others drive out to the farm. There's a lot to do. Nancy, Jonathan, and Lucas load water balloons with acetone while Steve, Mike, Robin, and Dustin mark out the living room floor. A chainsaw is all it takes to destroy the living room altogether, cutting apart the ceiling of the wine cellar below and destroying the Turnbows' wine racks. Below, they create a massive pit of barbed wire.

When the group finishes their preparations, they split off and wait for the hopefully inevitable. While Steve and Dustin head out to Steve's newly outfitted BMW, Robin watches over the farm with Will and Joyce. Will and Joyce apologize to one another for how they've been acting with Joyce admitting she felt like Will's original disappearance was her fault, but she refuses to avoid trying her best to keep her son from harm. Will just wants trust.

Soon enough, the lights at the Turnbow house start to flicker and the plan has to be put into action. While Mike, Nancy, Jonathan, and Lucas remain hidden within, the Demogorgon breaks through the ceiling into Derek's room, on the hunt for a boy who isn't there.
10. The person who left the map for Holly wasn't Henry at all, but who of these?

Answer: Max

When the Demogorgon pulls back the covers on Derek's bed, ready to grab him and take him into the Upside Down, it discovers that only a CPR dummy is in its place. Lucas slams it with several water balloons of acetone before leading it through the house and into the wine room trap where, waiting behind the bar, Jonathan lobs a flare at the doused creature and Nancy fires her shotgun at its trapped, prone body, lodging the tracker into its shoulder. It manages to jump back into the living room before creating a portal back into the Upside Down and fleeing.

Steve and Dustin give chase as soon as Nancy and Jonathan hop into the back seat, following the signal northwest through Hawkins, even driving through peoples' yards...until the signal turns back around, forcing them back the way they came.

At the farmhouse, the others realize the flaw in the plan when Derek Turnbow awakens and shouts for help, having withstood the several slices of benzo-laden pie. That he's awake means that Vecna has a bead on him, and that means the Demogorgon is headed their way.

In the woods outside Mr. Whatsit's house, Holly crosses the creek, locates the hill beyond, and finally comes across the massive wall of rocks on the map. In the rocks, at the spot she was sent to find, she locates a narrow crevasse and calls Henry's name, dropping her spyglass as soon as someone emerges and chases her back into the forest. She doesn't hide for long before she's found, but to her surprise, the one pursuing her, who called her out to the woods, wasn't Henry at all-- it was Max.
