Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Max awakens from her trance, she lets Lucas know that, this whole time, what she needed to find her way home was which of these?

Answer: Him

Max, at long last, awakens in the real world in Lucas' arms, finally free of Vecna's trance. Max can't feel much, but she can see. Vickie reminds her that her body is just weak, and she'll be okay. Max lets Lucas know that, as it turns out, the whole time she never needed the song he played, she judt needed him on the other side of the gate.

The other group, having come from Hopper's cabin, arrives just in time to see Max awake and let her know that she's in the basement of the hospital. There's still more to do though, since Vecna will be angry and likely come for her, knowing she escaped his realm.

Worse, Holly is still trapped. Even if she's not in Vecna's mindscape, she's still not back in Hawkins.
2. Holly is able to pull herself through into the Upside Down, but in doing so, finds herself in what odd circumstance?

Answer: Falling through the sky

Holly awakens to find herself within Vecna's infernal machine, trapped with the other eleven children, cocooned in his bindings. She manages to break herself free and tear herself out before vomiting up whatever Henry placed inside of her of the Upside Down, and when she gets to her feet, she finally sees him, suspended over the chamber keeping it functioning and connected to the realm around them. He realizes quite quickly that she's freed herself though, and in short time, as she runs away, he lowers himself to the ground to pursue her.

Jonathan and Nancy, meanwhile, have nothing to do but wait for help in the melted room they found themselves in in the Upside Down Hawkins Lab, but before long, Steve and Dustin are able to break through the wall to save them. Nancy jokes that it would have been good to know that what she was shooting at wasn't a shield generator, but it's more complicated than a simple explanation can clear up. Dustin points to Dr. Brenner's notebook though, and lets them know that Holly isn't on the other side of the wall, nor is she even in the Upside Down.

The truth is that she's in a realm beyond this. As she flees from Vecna, she trips ofver a loose rock, finding that there's a deep, lit crevasse beneath her feet, and recalling what Max said about Hawkins splitting when Vecna opened the gate, she takes her chances, drops herself into the hole in the ground, and hopes for the best in coming out the other side.

And it drops her through the sky in the Upside Down, causing her to plummet through the Upside Down, the bridge connecting Hawkins and Vecna's beyond. The others in the lab, hearing her scream, rush to search for her as she falls.
3. Mr. Clarke's plan to track Dustin succeeds with the use of which unconventional tools?

Answer: Balloons

With Erica and Murray's help and six hours of their hard-spent time, Mr. Clarke's telemetry task boils down to setting up balloons and trackers high over three key spots in Hawkins. Once they trilaterate the three points they've created, they'll be able to use telemetry to get Dustin's signal and hone in on him. Once the trio lets loose their balloons he's finally able to get a track of Dustin's location with his device.

At Hopper's cabin, Will worries that Vecna's last plans for him will cause the group to fail in their efforts. Joyce is able to break him free of his worry, at least a bit, by informing him that Max is awake, alive, and safe with the others, and it never would have happened if not for him. They all agree that Vecna will act within the day-- November 6-- but Will believes he's not able to succeed because of how weak he's always been. Joyce reminds him that none of this was his fault, and it's not over by a longshot, even if he doesn't believe it.
4. Nancy, Steve, Jonathan, and Dustin are able to reunite with the others in the Upside Down, but were they able to secure Holly upon her escape from Vecna?

Answer: No

The military rolls up to Hawkins Memorial Hospital as Max lets the others know that she sent Holly to meet them at the Wheeler house in the Upside Down. It means getting to the nearest rift, but there are other fish to fry first. Erica radios in to let Lucas know that the telemetry plan is working-- they've found Dustin and the others. It makes the most sense for their group to rendezvous with Holly, especially since the team in Hawkins has to evade capture at the hospital. Before they depart, Karen is forced to stay back, too injured to proceed. Will reassured her that they'll get Holly back, just like Will and just like Max.

All of the groups in Hawkins manage to come together at the old labs, the site where Dustin's telemetry tag has indicated, to get the signal they need and hear from Dustin on their walkie-talkies. Mike tries to lead them to his house in the Upside Down, but Dustin notes that they've, at the very least, located Holly.

While Hopper surveys the area around the sealed rift at the labs, El uses her powers to first destroy the surveillance cameras nearby, then lift the metal plates off the ground, opening the route into the Upside Down. There's nowhere to go but inside at that point.

When the Hawkins group arrives in the Upside Down, they're able to reunite with Dustin, Steve, Nancy, and Jonathan, but they don't have good news. When they went outside to follow Holly's screams, they witnessed her falling from the sky only to stop in mid-air, scream for help, and get pulled back up the way she came.
5. According to Dustin, the Upside Down is a wormhole connecting their world to what other location?

Answer: The Abyss

Once Holly was pulled back up through the Upside Down and back to the other side, she was carried back into Vecna's chambers and placed back into her spot amongst the other vessels, re-secured and reattached to his consciousness.

In the military hospital, Dr. Kay speaks to her injured men about the event that occurred at the Hawkins base the night before, and the being that massacred most of the units stationed there. She and Lt. Akers discuss their situation and the fact that they don't know how quite to proceed with a lack a lack of understanding of what they're up against. The focus should be on finding Eleven. Everything that has happened is as a result of her. Fortunately, Akers receives word of the rift breach at the Hawkins Lab, and he and his reinforcements head that way next.

The group, now entirely recomposed, returns to the Squawk to determine what's next and Lucas catches Max up on what they've been doing there. She's distracted though, since she promised Holly she'd be able to get out. Dustin is the one who notes that they still have a chance to save her because he's gotten some good ideas about what they're really up against.

In the office, Dustin shows the team that, while they always assumed the Upside Down was another dimension, it was always actually a bridge in space and time, created from exotic matter, between their world and what he has coined 'The Abyss'-- a realm of chaos and evil. All the evil things they've encountered in the Upside Down are likely from the Abyss, and it's where El banished Henry all those years ago. Dr. Brenner had El locate Henry, and when she did, the bridge formed. It explains why Vecna escaped a year earlier and why Holly fell from the sky. As for why Henry needs children, their minds are weaker, and he can use them to amplify his abilities to move worlds. Max confirms this; it's what he told the vessels. They have until the evening to figure out a way to stop Vecna from melding the worlds together, or else everything is lost.
6. As part of their plan to fight Vecna, Hopper jokes that they'd need magic beans to get to him, but Steve says they already have the beanstalk. What is he referring to?

Answer: The radio tower

Henry carefully places Holly in be in the house in his mindscape. The other kids ask for help understanding why Holly is so against their goal of saving the world, but their Mr. Whatsit has no good answers for this, insisting that Max corrupted her mind and she won't listen. The children need to convince her of their cause or they will fail when they execute their plan in the evening. Derek suggests that they all go home to their parents, but the other kids aren't willing to give up. They vow to bring her 'back to the light', much to Henry's delight.

In Hawkins, the military arrives at the labs to find that Eleven has left the rift to the Upside Down open. Lt. Akers notes that she's getting sloppy. After all, they now know she's in the real world.

At the Squawk, Hopper says that his plan is to hijack one of the helicopters at the base in the Upside Down, kidnap a pilot, and fly it up to collect the children, but no one's particularly into this option. Hopper, amidst a growing argument, jokes that they'll need magic beans to get to the Abyss, but Steve comes to a good point in that they have a beanstalk-- the radio tower. All they need to do is let Vecna bring the worlds close enough for the Upside Down Squawk to pierce through to the other side and they can head up to fight him. Better, Hawkins Lab is fully outfitted from back when the original lab was still usable, so El could leverage it to get into Vecna's mind. Max believes she can guide El through his mind, and Kali believes she can help with her powers, following together.

Dustin gives the cherry on top. On the way out, they plant a bomb near the exotic matter, get out before the timer goes off, and destroy the bridge forever, stopping any chance of the Abyss ever reaching their world again.

The plan is as good as they'll get it.
7. Holly, in an attempt to fight against the other children and escape Mr. Whatsit's house again, has which of these broken during the fight?

Answer: Her necklace

When Holly finally awakens, trapped back in Henry's house, she finds the other children in her room, there to welcome her back to Mr. Whatsit's mindscape. Mary tells Holly that Mr. Whatsit is worried about her, and she and the others refuse to believe what she's saying. Holly seeks Derek's confirmation that she's telling the truth, but having already been shown that Mr. Whatsit will kill his family if he stays out of line, he lies instead. She attempts to fight back against the other kids and run, but they restrain her instead, Mary shattering the Holly the Heroic necklace Mike gave her before she falls down the stairs.

In the real world, El flips Murray's truck so that he can repair it and use it in the coming plans. Back at the Squawk, with the chance to speak, Hopper confides in Joyce that he thinks something is happening with Eleven and Kali that he can't stop; he doesn't trust that she won't act irrationally. His only goal is to make sure El gets out of this alive, and if anything happens in the tank, he'll pull her out. He refuses to lose her. They just have one last Crawl.

In the radio building, Will contemplates the plan while Max and Vickie come in to speak to him. They believe that the plan will work, but Max regrets that she has to stay back due to her physical incapability. Will believes that she's still useful though, and that he's the useless one, too much of a risk since he'd be at the heart of the hive mind. He asks how she's been able to survive this long, and she explains that she was lucky to find the cave, part of an old memory he was terrified of. He couldn't get over his human fear of what they found there, and that was the opening she needed to get out.
8. Who builds the bomb that the team anticipates will destroy the Upside Down?

Answer: Mike

As the group prepares to head into the Upside Down, Robin finds Mike building the bomb that's meant to detonate the wormhole when everything comes to an end, and she laughs at the fact that he's chosen a record by the Butthole Surfers to play while the device is triggered since he didn't choose a good record.

In the meantime, the others dress the part and load their weapons. Dustin takes Steve aside and gives him a surprising weapon to use in the fight ahead-- Eddie's makeshift spears. Steve apologizes for what he told Dustin in the Upside Down, regretting what he said about Eddie earlier. He wishes he was there for him instead of angry with him; he missed his best friend. The two make up before rejoining the others with Dustin even admitting the beanstalk plan is genius.

While Erica stakes out the military base with Mr. Clarke and secures the gate signal, Murray tries to fix the truck quick enough to execute the plan. Nearby, Kali and Eleven share their minds with one another and run through the plan from their perspectives, but it doesn't look good. Even if they destroy Dr. Kay's lab with the bomb, Kali notes, she'll rebuild elsewhere, and killing Dr. Kay won't solve for a replacement. If El flees with Mike, they will kill him and take her. It doesn't end if they're around, but they can stop it. After they kill Henry, they simply stay on the bridge. When the Upside Down vanishes, they will too. It's the only way.
9. Before joining the fight against Vecna, Will reveals his deepest secret to the others.

Answer: True

While the others load Murray's truck with supplies for the final Crawl, Will and Joyce have a private moment alone inside, this being the perfect opportunity, and the last chance, for him to come clean about the situation. He lets her know that when Vecna attacks, he weakens you by turning your own mind against you, He always fought back with happy memories, and that's how he defeated the Demogorgons in the MAC-Z, but when he attempted the same on Vecna, he found a way past and showed him what was already inside his own thoughts, memories, and secrets. Max reminded him, though, that Vecna is also afraid, and with that they can beat him. But for him to do that, he needs to be honest with everyone.

Before the group leaves, Will brings them inside the building and tells the truth-- that he's different and always has been. He always wanted to be like everyone else, and he is in most ways, but unlike most of the other guys, he doesn't like girls. He admits that he had a crush on someone who was never going to reciprocate, but that was okay; it was for him to overcome, but when Vecna went into his mind earlier and brought forth this fear, he knew that he had to lay it out and face it, even though it meant that his friends might drift away from him more and more until he's alone.

As, one by one, the others tell him that they are there for him and he will never be alone, he comes to the relieved understanding that he can face the fight ahead. While El attacks Vecna from the dream world, he will be waiting to fight him in the physical world with a weapon stronger than bullets.
10. Who is the only person in the MAC-Z to watch as El heads into the Upside Down with the others?

Answer: Dr. Kay

At the MAC-Z, despite there being guards onsite, Murray is able to drive the truck through the front gate with Mr. Clarke's code activating the door. The military opens fire but Hopper returns their shots, and while Dr. Kay emerges with her men to take on the truck, Nancy emerges from the hole in the roof to shoot down at her men. Hopper leaps into the back while he has the chance, and as Murray heads through the gate to the Upside Down, it gives Dr. Kay one last look at El before she crosses over.

Everyone in the truck, as it turns out, get through the MAC-Z unscathed, and that's the easy part. As Mike asks El if she's ready, she says she is, but as she turns to Kali, she gives an unspoken response with a subtle nod.

In Mr. Whatsit's house, Henry and the children light candles in the dining room and take their seats around the table. As he has them all hold hands, he lets them know that it's time. The moment has arrived in which his plan to merge the worlds has commenced.
