Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Steve likens the gates between the real world and the Upside Down to which of these before driving through it?

Answer: A Bopper

Joyce is the one to speak to Derek Turnbow, removing his hood to try and instill in him the idea that they're trying to help him, even though they drugged and kidnapped his whole family. The catch is that Mr. Whatsit told him that he would be safe, and he believes Mr. Whatsit more than Joyce and Will, even though Joyce insists that he's a bad man working with the monsters. Joyce asks Derek to cooperate with them and they'll loosen his ropes, but the minute they do that, he pushes everyone aside and makes a run for it.

Though Will is able to knock Derek down and both Robin and Erica are able to seal the exit, Derek climbs to the relative safety of the hayloft, plugs his ears, and refuses to listen. It's too late at this point. As the Demogorgon arrives at the barn, it breaks through the door and comes face-to-face with Joyce, wielding an axe and standing in its way. She manages to fend off the creature with her wild swings, edging it back out of the building...just in time for Steve to hit it with his BMW.

The Demogorgon, avoiding fighting the reunited group, pulls a gate open in a nearby silo and the group in the car, realizing they can chase it onto its home turf, plows through behind it, emerging into the Upside Down with a strong signal on their tracker. The Beamer crew follows the signal deeper into Hawkins out to where the Roane Hill Cemetery should be but, when Steve and Dustin spend the drive arguing, they end up colliding with the wall.

Back in the barn, Will has a vivid vision of captured children before he finally awakens, shaking in terror in Joyce's arms.
2. According to Will, Vecna's spires have space for how many children?

Answer: 12

At the barn, Joyce tries to contact Jonathan and the others from the van radio. When Robin comes to retrieve her, the two of them return to find that Will has painted something on the barn wall-- something he believes means a great deal to Vecna, even if he doesn't quite know what it is. Robin reasons that Will tapped into the hive mind in a way that overloaded his senses. It's the closest they've been to answers.

Holly, Will notes, was a part of the vision, attached to a spire, and connected to Vecna. There were three others there as well. Vecna is escalating and he has enough spires for twelve children. It's an urgent issue, but when Mike and Lucas arrive with more information, they realize its' more dire. Vecna isn't the only one who wants the kids; the military is heading door-to-door, collecting the children of Hawkins and taking them to a secure base for safe-keeping.

Dr. Kay, speaking to Lt. Col. Sullivan, hypothesizes that Eleven has been taking the children for unknown purposes. Her instructions are to have the children her men have collected taken to the MAC-Z for protection. From there, they can be used as bait to draw El out, and that's when they'll strike.

In the forest outside of Mr. Whatsit's house, Max apologizes to Holly for scaring her and explains that it may seem odd that she's both with her and in a coma in Hawkins General. They rush to Max's cave hideaway, an oddly comfortable nook in the canyon wall, and she explains that they're trapped in a memory. It might look nice, but this world is a prison of Henry's creation.
3. Who does Mike suggest they use as a spy to infiltrate the MAC-Z?

Answer: Derek

The bus full of Hawkins' kids makes its way to the MAC-Z and Erica radios in the details of their whereabouts, allowing the group, now back at the Squawk, to organize another plan. Fortunately, the tunnels beneath the MAC-Z run right under the barracks the kids are being stowed into. The problem is that they need to burrow up into it, avoiding the guards, absconding with the kids, getting them into Murray's truck, and out of Hawkins altogether. It requires a lot to go right. Robin likens the situation to "The Great Escape"; they just need to get the kids into a proper tunnel and figure out who's being targeted by Vecna. They, luckily, have a potential spy in their midst-- Derek Turnbow.

Lt. Akers manages to free himself from the bus in the Upside Down without Hopper and El noticing, and it's partly because they've moved on without him, headed to the military base to scope out what's going on. El is convinced that Vecna is in there, but Hopper thinks there's a hole in the theory-- if his powers are diminished by the sonic signal, he couldn't have kidnapped Holly.

El tries to convince Hopper that she can jump the fence into the compound, but the argument here is interrupted by Dustin on the walkie-talkie. Finally able to transmit due to the group's location in the Upside Down, he asks Hopper and El to meet them at the Roane Hill Cemetery church; they've literally hit a wall in their tracking. If El can use her powers to pull the Beamer from the wall there, they can keep tracking the Demogorgon. Hopper decides that while they will help the others, they have something more important to deal with first, and that involves putting El's training to the test.
4. Holly likens Henry Creel's memory world to which of these fictional places?

Answer: Camazotz

Max explained as much as she could to Holly, recounting that when he took her, it allowed him to open the fourth gate, splitting Hawkins in two. She should have died at that moment, and for a minute she did die, but she felt something calling to her. She awakened in a laboratory playroom filled with corpses, and when she fled into the hall she found it littered with the bodies of the scientists who worked there.

She passed through the doors of the lab into Hawkins High School, but back in 1959. She wasn't actually back in time; she was just an observer in Henry Creel's memory from thirty years ago. Holly says it's like Camazotz from "A Wrinkle in Time", and in the book, the protagonist's dad gets trapped there, just like Max.

Max explains that she only had a few options when she found herself in Henry's memories-- she could commit suicide, she could accept her fate, or she could escape. She set her mind on escaping. Henry's memories are like a maze though, and she was easily lost in it-- so lost she ended up back in the lab. But that's where she heard Kate Bush's voice.

Music, Max says, has the ability to guide people through the darkest of places. Lucas used it before to guide her back to the light and out of Vecna's mind. It might still work and get her back home. The problem is that everything went wrong.
5. Dustin determines that there is a massive wall forming a circle around the Upside Down. What's at the center of that circle?

Answer: Hawkins Lab

Derek heads to the MAC-Z on foot, arriving at the gate and getting let in on account of all of his schoolmates being inside already. The military ushers him in with the others, and his first order of business is to get some measurements. Outside, in Hawkins, Murray delivers another round of provisions and shows off his safe room-- a walled-off compartment with milk crates and padding, perfect for a handful of children he'll be smuggling out of Hawkins if everything goes to plan. They get the word from Derek-- forty-five paces from the front door to the bathroom stall. Next, he has to find out who's met Mr. Whatsit, and it's something he does with as little tact as possible...successfully.

At the Squawk, Will explains to Mike that he saw through the Demogorgon's eyes; it was like a scary movie he couldn't turn off. Mike says that next time, maybe he can just turn off the movie, pulling the strings like Vecna does. In "Dungeons & Dragons", Will is a wizard, but in real life, he's like a sorcerer because his powers are innate. It's a silly theory, but they need all the magic they can get.

In the Upside Down, while El infiltrates the military base by leaping over the fence. Evading the guards (to a point), she navigates the roof, hops to one of the towers, and opens the gate to let Hopper in. She has to leave it to him to destroy the sonic dish, but before he goes ahead, she thanks him for trusting her.

Dustin, meanwhile, tries to use the Beamer and the transponder to find a solution while Nancy, Steve, and Jonathan stress over the situation from the church. The problem is that there isn't a solution to the wall problem; Dustin has determined it's a complete circle around Hawkins and there's no way through. There's a weird frequency next to the wall-- an interference. And at the center of the circle is the Department of Energy Building, the Hawkins Lab where everything started. It's too much of a coincidence not to check out.
6. Max determined that Henry/Vecna was actually afraid to step foot in the cave at the edge of the woods.

Answer: True

Max reveals to Holly that the Kate Bush music, when she really searched for it, led her to a new memory, only she was in the memory; it was the day that Vecna cursed her. She kept following the music as it led her through new memories-- terrible ones-- that she thought would never end. Fortunately, they did, leading to the night that Vecna killed her in the Creel house in the real world. She'd finally found the way out and she was so close to crossing through the portal to Lucas and her body in Hawkins General, but the tape stopped. Though Lucas rewound the tape, that's when Henry found her.

Max ran and kept running until she found the cavern, and when he tried to follow her through the crevasse, she found that he wouldn't, as though the memory of it terrified him. It allowed her to keep a sanctuary there, but it brought her no closer to freedom. It meant accepting her fate... until Holly showed up. She has a plan to get them out of there. Henry will be back soon and Holly has to stay at his house, with him, in order to enact it. It's the only way that they'll be able to escape Camazotz.

In the tunnels beneath Hawkins, Joyce, Lucas, and Mike start measuring distances to better-calculate the escape route while Robin and Will lag behind and chat. Robin confides in Will that she used to have a crush on Tammy Thompson, and when Tammy fell for Steve, her fantasy life with Tammy crumbled. But she came to realize she was looking for answers in someone else when she really had those answers in herself. She was scared of who she really was.

It's about then that they hit where they need to beneath the MAC-Z.

In the Upside Down, Lt. Akers makes it back to the military base and demands to be taken to Dr. Kay.
7. The group in Hawkins is able to reach the barracks through the tunnel systems, but in doing so, they damage which of these?

Answer: Water pipes

At the MAC-Z, Lucas and Mike manage to break through to the surface right where they need to be, but when Mike starts to knock his shovel into the pipes, he risks blowing their covers completely. Up in the barracks, Derek guides Henry's chosen children through mindful meditation, preparing them for the hopeful jailbreak. He receives the signal from his walkie-talkie and sends the selected kids, one-by-one, into the bathroom where they head into the out-of-order stall and descend through the smashed hole in the floor. What Mike realizes, as they start getting the children into the tunnels, is that they've knocked something loose. The pipes seem ready to burst at any moment.

Hopper and El manage to infiltrate the military base but they find that they don't have the proper clearance to advance deeper than the lab. It takes knocking out one of the scientists there and wielding El's powers to start taking care of the thick, metal doors, but they're stopped in their tracks by sonic blasts from devices in the ceiling. Dr. Kay and her men advance on their position and, alone, Dr. Kay locates El hiding, cowering in her office. Hopper, meanwhile, opens fire, distracting and subduing Lt. Akers and the other soldiers before inadvertently finding himself in a containment unit with one of the Upside Down's more vicious creatures. It's where Dr. Kay finds him.
8. Is the Hawkins group successful in extracting Henry's chosen children from the barracks?

Answer: No

Robin absconds with a couple of the kids in the tunnels before things can get out of hand, and while Derek sends others into the bathroom, Mike and Will struggle to keep the plumbing from bursting. They get the fourth kid into the tunnels before someone finds out what's going on and alerts the officer stationed in the barracks. Lucas rushes with the remaining kids in the tunnels while Derek gets the others into the bathroom just in time to help Mike and Will barricade the door. Murray retrieves the first group of children at the tunnel entrance near the Squawk, but those still around the Barracks don't get so lucky.

In the Upside Down, Dr. Kay watches as Hopper struggles with the creature and she decries him for putting Eleven's life at risk coming to her lab. Using heat and cold she intensifies the being's abilities to keep him in its grip, and with that she insists that he start talking, giving her the answers to the plan she doesn't seem to know about. She doesn't realize, in this, that El is fighting back against the sonic energy. As El stumbles back into the lab Dr. Kay gets her into her grip, giving El the opportunity to drive a pair of scissors into her arm. It's enough of a distraction to allow Hopper to free himself from the creature, apprehend Dr. Kay, and hold her at gunpoint. She acknowledges that cavalry is already on its way before he knocks her out and takes her keycard.

To protect El, Hopper attempts to hand over a compass and direct her to the cemetery, but she quickly realizes that Hopper's covered himself in explosives-- a failsafe, he quickly hand waves. While El tries to follow him, he lets himself into the security corridor and closes the door behind him, ready to face Vecna alone.
9. Who, as Hopper discovers, is within the secure room in the military base in the Upside Down?

Answer: None of these

Robin and Murray get three of their expected eight children into the back of the delivery truck while Lucas rushes through the tunnels with two more. Erica is the one to break the bad news to them-- the others have been caught by the guards and Lt. Col. Sullivan is overseeing them as captives. As Derek starts to argue with the military, Will starts to feel the unnerving goosebumps that come from being connected to the hive mind and it's the worst possible time. As the Demogorgons race through the Upside Down, he realizes that they're coming.

As the lights in the MAC-Z start to flicker uncontrollably and the soldiers, unholsters their weapons banging starts to be felt from the metal panels on the ground. It takes no effort before the Demogorgons break through, dispatching the soldiers with ease. At the Squawk, Robin and Murray realize that they're also being pursued; they drive off in order to prevent the Demogorgons from getting to them immediately. In the tunnels, Lucas realizes that he's nearly surrounded.

While the soldiers unload as many weapons as possible on the attacking creatures, Mike tries to lead the children, Joyce, and Will to the nearby Radio Shack to connect back to the tunnel system, but the pain proves too much for Will who, still linked to the hive mind, feels every weapon strike. Fortunately, the Demogorgons collectively feel this pain as well, giving everyone the chance to act and move.

In the Upside Down, El sees the reaction that the creature in containment exhibits as well, and moments later, the sonic signal cuts out. It gives her all the clarity of mind she needs to watch Hopper open the passage to the sealed room and let her inside. What she finds there, to her shock, isn't Vecna, but Kali-- Eight-- who she met in Chicago many years before; it's her only surviving sister from the lab.

On the surface in Hawkins, Will watches as a figure emerges from the gate in the compound wall. The passage peels open as Vecna shows himself and strides through.
10. Who doesn't survive when Vecna arrives in Hawkins through the MAC-Z gate?

Answer: All of these people survive the encounter

When Vecna passes into the real world he wastes no time in killing the soldiers with little effort, forcing back their firepower and systematically wiping out their reinforcements. As he consolidates his powers, he brings the Demogorgons back online, leaving all of the escaping groups to scramble again. The Squawk group contends with the trio of Demogorgons bound for the truck only for Murray to crash in a field, leaving the vehicle on its side while Lucas, running through the tunnels, has no choice but to get cut off from both sides.

Vecna finds what he's looking for when he pulls a vehicle aside with his mind, and when Joyce realizes he's coming for Will, she stands in his way. He tosses her aside with ease before pulling Will to his side, explaining that he chose these children to reshape the world-- these weak, pliable children, easily broken and reshaped as vessels. And Will, he says, was his first.

As the Demogorgons drag all the necessary children through their gates and into the Upside Down, Vecna casts Will to the ground and returns from whence he came. He sends Demogorgons back through to Hawkins to dispose of Will's friends, already left helpless and alone, but that's when Will calls to mind what Robin said. He's had all the answers this whole time.

As Will recalls his past, his friendships, and his family-- all of his happy memories-- he decides that he needs to stop being scared. The Demogorgons, set to attack Will, Robin, and Lucas, are held back solely by Will's strength and power, stretching across Hawkins. As he uses the hive mind to fight back and protect the others, he manages to destroy the creatures, breaking their bones and leaving them for dead while Joyce and Will watch what he's capable of.
