Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year was the first episode of 'The Crystal Maze' original broadcast?

Answer: 1990

The first episode of 'The Crystal Maze' was broadcast on 15th February 1990 and was the first episode of a 13-episode series. The show was broadcast in the UK on Channel 4. A further 5, 13-episode series were made with one broadcast each year, with the final episode of the show airing on August 10th, 1995.

A number of Christmas special episodes featuring young players were also aired. The show was revived in 2017 and ran for 3 series.
2. 'The Crystal Maze' saw players partaking in games across four themed zones. Which of these was not a zone in the first series of the show?

Answer: Ancient Greece

In the show, contestants had to complete various games in order to win crystals, which gave them time in the Crystal Dome at the end of the show in which they could win a prize. The original series featured four zones called Industrial, Aztec, Futuristic, and Medieval.

The teams started at one zone and then moved around the zones through the show. The set and games are loosely connected to the theme, with the Industrial Zone looking like a factory, while the Medieval Zone looked like a castle. The Aztec Zone was desert and jungle-themed, while the Futuristic Zone was supposed to be on a space station.
3. In 'The Crystal Maze,' players were selected by the team captain to take part in one of four types of games. Which of these was a real game type?

Answer: Mental

The four game types in 'The Crystal Maze' were mental, physical, skill, and mystery. Physical games usually involved strength and speed, such as navigating an obstacle course or moving heavy things. Skill games required more dexterity, such as aiming at a target. Mental games usually took the form of logic or word puzzles to solve, while Mystery games were games that didn't fit into the other categories, such as games requiring contestants to search a room for clues as to where the crystal was hidden.
4. During Richard O'Brien's tenure as host, a character known as 'Mumsie' sometimes appeared in the Medieval Zone. What was the name of the actress who played this character?

Answer: Sandra Caron

Mumsie appeared in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th series of 'The Crystal Maze'. In the 3rd series, she was said to have gone away, and the character of 'Auntie Sabrina' appeared instead. This character was also played by Sandra Caron. Sandra Caron was a British actress who was born in London in 1936 and died in 2025. She was the sister of the pop singer Alma Cogan, with Caron being a stage name.
5. After three series of 'The Crystal Maze', one of the original zones was replaced by the Ocean Zone. Which zone was replaced?

Answer: Industrial

The Ocean Zone took the setting of a sunken steam ship, with the premise being that it was located deep under the ocean. The games in the Ocean Zone often had a nautical or water theme. The Ocean Zone replaced the Industrial Zone for the start of the 4th series, which aired in 1993.
6. The Ocean Zone was set on a sunken ship. What was the name of this fictional ship?

Answer: SS Atlantis

There were two distinct aspects of this zone. The rooms off the main saloon were designed to look like traditional, old-fashioned ship cabins with wood panelling and luxurious decor. The other section was designed to look like crew working areas and was much plainer in design and featured things such as metal hatches and doors.
7. The aim of 'The Crystal Maze' was for contestants to win crystals to give them time to collect tokens in the Crystal Dome at the end of the show. How many seconds was each crystal worth in the Crystal Dome?

Answer: 5

By successfully completing a game, contestants won a crystal, with many of the games requiring contestants to physically retrieve a crystal through engaging with the game mechanism. Every crystal won gave the contestants 5 seconds in the Crystal Dome, where they had to gather as many gold tokens as they could while avoiding the silver ones. Any silver tokens collected were deducted from the total of gold tokens, and if enough gold tokens remained, the contestants would win a prize.
8. If a contestant did not make it out of a game room in the allotted time, they would be 'locked in' and unable to continue in the show until they were brought back by the team. How did teams buy back a locked-in player?

Answer: Give up a time crystal

Each game had a time limit, and if the contestant had not left the room before the time ran out (regardless of whether they had won the crystal or not), they would be 'locked in' the game room. Some games were also referred to as 'automatic lock-ins' where a contestant could fail the game and be locked-in for failing so many times or otherwise breaking some set rule, i.e., stepping on the floor or triggering an alarm.

The team did not have to 'buy back' locked-in players, but if they chose to do so could exchange a won time crystal for the player. Teams had to balance the benefit of an extra player in the Crystal Dome versus the loss of time from giving up a crystal.
9. The original presenter, Richard O'Brien, left the show after the fourth series. What was the name of the presenter who replaced him for the 5th and 6th series?

Answer: Ed Tudor-Pole

British actor Richard O'Brien, who is perhaps best known for writing and starring in 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', was the presenter of 'The Crystal Maze' for its first four series. At the start of the 1993 Christmas special episode, O'Brien and Mumsie are seen leaving the maze for California.

He was replaced by Ed Tudor-Pole, who had initially found fame as the lead singer of the late 1970s punk band Tenpole Tudor before moving into acting in the 1980s.
10. The Futuristic Zone was supposed to be controlled by a central computer that the presenter spoke to. During the tenure of the second presenter, the computer had a female persona with what name?

Answer: Barbara

During Richard O'Brien's time as presenter, the computer had a male voice and would often frustrate and wind up O'Brien. During the second presenter's tenure, the computer had a female voice and persona called Barbara. The presenter would interact with the computer persona as though he were infatuated by her.
