Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If there is a main character in "Cuffs", I suppose it is Student Constable PC Jake Vickers. What is TRUE about Jake?

Answer: He is gay

"Cuffs" is very much an ensemble effort, with a strong cast. This is one of its best aspects. Jake is a young man of 22, and the run of the show coincides with his ten week long placement with the Sussex police in his hometown of Brighton. He is the son of a high-ranking officer, Chief Superintendent Robert Vickers. Donna Prager is also a character, but she is partnered with Lino Moretti. Jake's partner is PC Ryan Draper.
2. PC Ryan Draper, although a fairly young man, has much to contend with. Such as?

Answer: He is a widower with two children

Ryan mostly comes across as quite a balanced character, with healthy habits and a strong dedication to his work. He is devoted to his family; mother, son and daughter. We meet his mother, who seems to have an alcohol problem. This is just hinted at, though. Also, no love interest in Ryan's life, and in any case, Donna doesn't go for men.
3. Jo Moffat is one of the detectives on the show. What kind of crime do we NOT see her investigate?

Answer: Purse snatching

Jo has ambitions to secure a permanent position as Detective Sergeant (DS), for which she has to pass an exam (she does). She is also in a secret and not very rewarding relationship with Robert Vickers, the big boss, who is married and whose wife has cancer.

Despite her vulnerabilities, she is smart, dedicated, tough and tenacious. Go, Jo! Although there is a storyline involving purse snatching, it's not Jo who investigates it.
4. A runaway iguana appears in one episode. What is NOT true about the events surrounding it?

Answer: The iguana dies

The iguana, which is in good shape to begin with, is taken care of by a competent professional, Orla. She and Lino begin a relationship, which seems to progress well, despite a marked lack of enthusiasm from Orla's 11 year old daughter. Donna, the adrenaline junkie who's never scared of anything, is decidedly sceptical of the iguana.
5. Cop shows are about crimes, but not only. What is NOT a motif we encounter on "Cuffs"?

Answer: Institutional racism

While institutional racism is a real problem, not least in police forces in many countries, it is not problematised in "Cuffs". Mental health is, though, in the form of vulnerable people not provided with care, and putting themselves and others at risk of harm, not to mention doing actual harm.

The lack of resources for the police and other emergency services is prominent, both in opinions expressed and in practice. And there is lots of gay stuff, with Jake's love interest, Donna and her wife, Pride celebrations, a (possibly) homophobic assault and a somewhat problematic teenage coming out.
6. He doesn't talk a lot, he is into sexual domination games, and has a difficult family life. Who is this enigmatic detective?

Answer: DI Felix Kane

Felix is an odd sort. Secretive, but we learn about him in drips and drabs. A capable investigator, he is hardly a ray of sunshine. Given his upbringing and current conflict (on more than one level) with his elderly and infirm father, that is perhaps not so surprising.

He was a good swimmer at school, though. Inspector Graham Webb, a tough-as-nails character, is not a detective, whereas Andy Roper and Kevin Lumb belong on another excellent UK cop show, Scott and Bailey.
7. DC Carl Hawkins is a jolly soul, but what is the major stress factor in his personal life?

Answer: His new wife wants a baby, and Carl does not

Carl loves his wife Sandy, but with three daughters from a previous marriage and little time to be a father to them, he dreads the idea of another child. For Sandy, though, it is a dominant factor of her life, which makes Carl afraid to say how he feels. This lead to secrets and lies, which is hardly the ideal recipe for harmony on the home front.
8. Lino Morelli is Donna's partner. What is TRUE about him?

Answer: He eats too much, and worries about his weight

Plenty of gay stuff in "Cuffs", but Lino is quite straight. Also, he is very proud of his Italian background. He's a lovable guy, and Donna is devoted to him. Lino, however, is pudgy and loves both good food and junk food, especially doughnuts. This makes Donna, with her strong focus on healthy eating and fitness, a rather demanding partner for him. Still, he tries, both to control his weight and to meet a good woman.

He does seem to get lucky on that last count, and maybe he should worry less about other stuff.
9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Brighton! What sort of mischief do they get up to?

Answer: Organised pickpocketing

They are four young guys in costumes, who dance to music and entertain the crowds. They're not half bad at it, either. The routine is that one of them leaves the dancing rank and lift wallets out of the purses, pockets etc. of the watchers. Jake and Ryan spot them, though, and catch them.

As they are being processed, the custody sergeant refers to one of them as "the little one". When Jake corrects her and says that the name is Michelangelo, she replies: "He's small, green and annoying. I don't care what he's called."
10. Planes, trains and automobiles. Or whatever. What kind of transportation does not play any role on "Cuffs"?

Answer: Airplanes

While there is some patrolling on foot, cars dominate. There are also a few car chases. Always thrilling, that. In one episode, a bank robber en route to a court appearance escapes on a motorbike. As for helicopters, there is some complaining about the lack of helicopter support. Also, they appear in a thrilling operation. Boats also play a part in some cases, and there is a dramatic scene involving a train.
