Evan Greenwood established the company Free Lives in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2012. Their games are primarily published by Devolver Digital who specialise in issuing games created by independent creators.
The company has created the best-selling 'Broforce' with a violent gladiator style game called 'Gorn' another of its products.
2. Rebellion Developments
Rebellion Developments is a relatively long-established company in this area, having been set up in 1992. Brothers Jason and Chris Kingsley studied in Oxford, with creating games as a hobby and sideline. Their creations were in demand, so they set up their own studio in Oxford and created a successful business. The company has opened subsidiaries in other English cities, including Liverpool and Warwick, in the twenty-first century.
The games associated with Rebellion are 'Alien vs Predator', created in 1994, 'Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death' and the 'Sniper Elite' series.
3. Capcom
Capcom is a Japanese company, established in 1979. The name is derived from 'Capsule Computers'. The company began producing arcade games originally before expanding into video games.
Among their products are 'Street Fighter' and the 'Resident Evil' franchise.
4. TiMi Studio Group
This game developer is a subsidiary of Tencent Games and both of them were established in Shenzhen, China. TiMi was established in 2008 and has two other branches in China as well as one in each of Montreal, Singapore and Los Angeles in the 2020s.
Games created by TiMi are 'Parkour Everyday', 'Pokémon Unite', and 'Delta Force'.
5. Playrix
Playrix was established in Dublin in 2004 by two Russian-born brothers. The company's speciality is games for mobile phones, and it has become an established presence in this area, and a profitable one, at least at the time this quiz was created.
Games created by Playrix include 'Township' and 'Homescapes'.
6. Electronic Arts
One of the longest-established companies in the genre, Electronic Arts was founded in 1982 in San Mateo, California. If you've played any computer games at all, it's probable that an EA product is among them.
One of their early games was 'Worms?', from 1983 with 'John Madden Football '92' among its early sports games. In the 2000s they developed 'The Sims' and the soccer management games called 'Football Manager' which were released every year.
7. King
King was originally called Midasplayer when it was set up in Stockholm, Sweden in 2003. The company changed its name to King in 2005. The success of companies like Zynga, who used Facebook to attract players to their games, led King to follow the same path.
King's first major success came with 'Bubble Witch Saga', but their blockbuster is 'Candy Crush Saga' which began in 2012 and has spawned a few variations on the theme. Its availability on various devices and its addictive nature means that the game remain popular more than a decade later.
8. Ubisoft
Ubisoft was established in Brittany, France, in 1986 by the Guillemot brothers. The name was created from 'ubiquitous' and 'software' and was originally shown as two words - Ubi Soft. They have established numerous studios and subsidiaries located around the world since that early start.
Among the games produced by Ubisoft are 'Assassin's Creed', 'Prince of Persia' and 'Rayman'.
9. Krafton
Located in South Korea's tenth largest city, Seongnam, Krafton was set up in 2018 as a holding company for several subsidiaries. It focuses on publishing with some game development, and some games are available only in Asia.
Among the games associated with Krafton are 'PUGB Mobile', 'Mistover' and 'inZOI', a game released in phases starting in March 2025.
10. Big Ant Studios
We head down under for this location. Big Ant Studios began in 2000 in Melbourne, Australia. The business became a subsidiary of Nacon, the French owner of various development studios around the world, in 2021. The studio specialises in sports games, arguing that there is always a market for these, with leagues and players changing season by season.
Among the sports for which Big Ant has created games are rugby league, Australia rules football and cricket.
