Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

"Donkey Kong Jr" was the direct sequel to the very first game in the entirety of this enormous spanning web of "Mario" related entities. This classic arcade game has a much greater focus on verticality compared to the very first to do it.

"Vs. Wrecking Crew" features both Mario and Luigi. In this game, the tandem are adversarial, and compete to see who can destroy whose section of walls before the other, in dual screen fashion.

"Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally" was, in essence, "Mario Kart" before that became a thing. This is a racing game featuring Mario and Luigi. While nowhere near as complex as the aforementioned racing series, the player still does have to make technical choices, like picking between a Sports Car or a Monster Buggy, or when to take a long way on the track because you need a Repair Point, or when you can just blaze ahead and try to have your car tough it out.

"Nintendo Campus Challenge" was released in 1991 for the NES. It is essentially a giant amalgamation of older titles mashed into one cartridge. Within it, "Super Mario Bros 3" and "Dr. Mario" are playable games.

"Yoshi" is the name of this video game as it was released to the west. But, internationally, this game is also known as "Mario & Yoshi", so it's not surprising that the big M himself is playable. Not just Mario, items and enemies from a traditional "Mario" game are here too: examples being Goombas, Piranha Plants, Mushrooms and the Fire Flower.

"NES Open Tournament Golf" is a golf game with characters from the "Mario" series. Mario and Luigi are playable, while Peach, Daisy, Toad, Donkey Kong and Monty Mole are not playable but do appear in the game.

In "Yoshi's Safari", Mario rides atop Yoshi through levels and has to use a Super Scope to shoot things. This game is essentially a tech demo for the hardware by the same name, as the player would actually need a physical Super Scope to play this game.

"Legend of the Seven Stars" is part of the "Super Mario RPG" series. This is a major tonal overhaul from typical games in the series, as this is a turn based game, with minor platforming and QTEs taking place.

"The Thousand Year Door" is part of the "Paper Mario" series. In this series, Mario is playable but the game is now entirely in 2D and offers a brand new perspective on the franchise in general.

"Super Mario 64" is one of the most famous video games of all time, and a defining title for the titular Nintendo 64. This was a 3D Mario game with elements of open world to it, and it was quite a lengthy game at that. Of course, it wouldn't be the same without the red-hatted legend himself taking the reigns.

"Luigi's Mansion", predictably, puts Mario's understudy into the spotlight. Mario still does appear in this game, but is more of a supporting character.

The "Super Smash Bros." franchise started as a crossover of Nintendo icons, before evolving into a broader celebration of gaming in bringing together as many iconic characters from gaming as it could. Either way, Mario has absolutely belonged and has been playable from the start.

"Super Princess Peach", as the title implies, casts Princess Peach into the spotlight. Unlike the many games before where Peach was captured by Bowser and saved by Mario, the tandem are in for some role reversal in this game.

"Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games" is a party game where characters from both iconic franchises come together to compete in a series of, well, Olympic events and games. Of course, Mario makes an appearance in this game.

Mario is not actually Mario in the very first "Donkey Kong". He is officially known as 'Jumpman'. He first officially received the name in "Donkey Kong Jr"

"Luigi's Hammer Toss" was an old game which came out on the Game & Watch long, long ago. It only has Luigi as a playable character.

"Wario Busters" was an arcade game in the 20th century. This game simply asks the player to chuck balls at Wario's head, with no mention or appearance of Mario anywhere.

"Donkey Kong 64" is an enormous adventure, similarly to "Mario 64". However, it only features Donkey Kong and the rest of the DK Crew as playable characters, no Mario.

"Kremling Krunch" was an online game from the early 2000s. In it, the goal here is actually to hunt Kongs, not Kremlings. This is a very basic whack-a-mole type game, with no Mario.

"Bowser's Diary" was an extremely niche online game which released in 2001. In it, Mario is mentioned but never actually makes a direct appearance.

"Punch Out!!" features Little Mac as a playable character, where he will box it out with others. Mario is not one of them, although Donkey Kong is.

"New Super Luigi U" launched in 2013, dubbed the "Year of Luigi" by Nintendo. Luigi is the only playable character in this game and Mario does not make an appearance.

"Dr. Luigi" was also part of the "Year of Luigi" releases. This is basically just "Dr. Mario" only with Luigi instead.

"Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker" was the first time Toad was a main focus of a video game. There is no Mario here whatsoever.

"Princess Peach: Showtime!" is a Nintendo Switch game starring Peach. It is a major tonal shift with an entirely stage-play setting throughout the game. Peach gains the ability to seamlessly change her costume and capabilities into powerful forms, such as Swordfighter, Detective and Kung Fu. However, Mario does not appear in this game at all.
