Luigi is Mario's twin brother, who made his first appearance in the 1983 game "Mario Bros". Originally, he was similar in shape to his brother, but in later iterations he became taller and thinner. Both usually wear blue dungarees, but Luigi sports a green shirt and hat, with a letter "L" on the hat, just to make the distinction perfectly clear.
2. Bowser
Answer: Mario
Bowser is the chief antagonist of the "Mario" universe, and is depicted as a fierce, armoured tortoise-like creature (his actual species is a Koopa). He first appeared in the 1985 "Super Mario Bros" game. His main aim throughout the games is to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom, which usually requires him to capture Princess Peach, the kingdom's ruler.
3. Yoshi
Answer: Mario
Yoshi is a green dragon-like creature who is a friend and ally of Mario. His first appearance was in the 1990 game "Super Mario World", where he appears on the box artwork being ridden by Mario. He has also featured in a number of spin-off games as a character in his own right.
4. Link
Answer: Zelda
Link is the principal hero of the "Legend of Zelda" game series and first appeared in the original 1986 game of that title. He is usually depicted as a young man with fair or light brown hair, wearing a green tunic and hat. Most games require him to overcome various obstacles and opponents in the land of Hyrule, with the aim of rescuing Princess Zelda from the villainous Ganon.
5. Navi
Answer: Zelda
Navi is a character in the 1998 game "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". She is a fairy, depicted as a blue ball of light with wings, who performs as a guide and advisor to Link throughout the game. Her name is an abbreviation of "navigation", after her original character name of "Fairy Navigation System".
Many players are reported to find her an annoying character, especially her repetition of the words "Hey Listen"" whenever she has any advice to give (which happens rather a lot).
6. Kaepora Gaebora
Answer: Zelda
Kaepora Gaebora is an owl who performs a similar role to Navi in guiding Link through various scenes in games such as "Ocarina of Time" (1998), "Majora's Mask" (2000) and "Four Swords Adventures" (2004). Gamers often complain that he has a tendency to talk a lot, without actually providing much useful advice.
7. K. K. Slider
Answer: Animal Crossing
K. K. Slider is a dog who performs as a folk-rock musician in the village, giving regular performances and enabling players to download copies of his music to play outside the game. He is based on the Japanese video game composer Kazumi Totaka and is known in Japanese games as Totakeke, although his in-game music is written by various composers.
8. Mr. Resetti
Answer: Animal Crossing
Mr Resetti is an angry mole whose role in the game is to remind the player to save their game progress before quitting. If, however, they fail to do so (which is regarded as cheating), he turns up and lectures the player when they "reset" the game - his name is a pun on "resetting".
The more often you reset, the longer and angrier his harangues become. This naturally makes him a bit unpopular, although it's hard not to admire the creativity behind the character.
9. Tom Nook
Answer: Animal Crossing
The original "Animal Crossing" game was first released in 2001 and allows the player to become a character in a village inhabited by a variety of animals. Tom Nook is a raccoon (or a tanuki in the original Japanese release of the game) who runs the village store.
He is also a monument to the enduring power of the capitalist system, in that he not only sells the new player a house when they arrive in the village, but also loans them the money they need to afford said property, and then gives them a job so they can earn enough to pay back the loan.
10. Pikachu
Answer: Pokémon
The word Pokémon is short for "Pocket Monsters", and the game franchise is based around the concept of "collecting" the many, many different versions of the characters. Perhaps the most famous Pokémon is Pikachu, a yellow mouse-like creature who first appeared in the "Pokémon Red and Blue" games in 1996. Since then, he has acquired a life of his own outside the original game concept, even appearing as a detective in the 2019 film "Detective Pikachu", voiced by no less a star than Ryan Reynolds.
11. Jigglypuff
Answer: Pokémon
Jigglypuff also first appeared in the "Pokémon Red and Blue" games in 1996. It is a small, circular pinkish thing with pointed ears and big eyes, and evolves from a Pokémon named Igglybuff when that creature becomes sufficiently happy. Subsequently, it can then evolve into Wigglytuff. Please note, I'm just describing what happens in the game. I didn't make these names up.
12. Charmander
Answer: Pokémon
Charmander first appeared in the 1996 "Pokémon Red and Blue" games. It is an orange lizard-like creature with a flame coming out of its tail. It is a fire-type Pokémon which can evolve into first Charmeleon and then Charizard.
