Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Passing through the labs beneath Mahogany Town, you'll need to collect three passwords. Which is not one of them?

Answer: Ragecandybar

Team Rocket's work in Mahogany Town is particularly nefarious as it seems they've created a sprawling underground base in the basement of a small, log cabin in the center of town from which they're able to shoot off a problematic radio signal (causing weird things to happen in the Lake of Rage to the north). You and Lance will have to head on into the lair here to stop the organization, and this will require that you locate three separate passwords to access the last chamber.

The last of these, 'Hail Giovanni', is obtained from a Murkrow, and even though Giovanni is (apparently) out of the picture, it's clear his presence still lingers.
2. Which Apricorn colour does NOT exist?

Answer: Gold

Generation II introduces eight different Apricorns into the series, all of which can be plucked from trees around the world map, and all of which can be brought to Kurt in Azalea Town so that he can create special Pokeballs. Each colour of Apricorn serves a different purpose, allowing custom creations to be made and used depending on your battle circumstances.

A yellow Apricorn, for example, creates a Moon Ball, which increases the chances of catching a Pokemon that would otherwise evolve with a Moon Stone.
3. There are four different slide puzzles that can be found in the Ruins of Alph. Which Pokemon will you NOT find depicted on one of these?

Answer: Lugia

Each of these four puzzles, which requires that you properly slot-in sixteen square pieces on a puzzle board to create the image of a rare (and generally fossilized) Pokemon, is found in a chamber that may or may not be hard-to-reach, positioned overtop of a true archaeological marvel in the "Pokemon" world. Once any one of these is completed, it will reveal several different types of Unown which will then be available for capture in the ruins below.

The four puzzles depict Kabuto, Aerodactyl, Ho-Oh, and Omanyte.
4. The Basement Key can be used to unlock a door in which Goldenrod City location?

Answer: Underground Passage

Something wrong with the Director at the Goldenrod City Radio Tower, and as you get deeper and deeper into the big mysteries behind the Johto Region, you'll come to discover that this being out-o-f-sorts is a result of Team Rocket's nefarious influence.

They'll have hidden the real Director in the rooms beneath Goldenrod City, and to free him you'll have to defeat the Team Rocket Exec in the Radio Tower to get the Basement Key. In the Basement, in the Underground Warehouse, you can get the Card Key from the real Director, access Floor 3F in the Radio Tower, and clear it out for good.
5. Which of these Ecruteak City locations is home to Ho-Oh?

Answer: Tin Tower

It's believed that both landmark towers in Ecruteak City were the home roosts of the game's legendary birds, Ho-Oh and Lugia, but only Ho-Oh remains when you play through "Gold"/"Silver"/"Crystal", appearing at the top of the Tin Tower (the Bell Tower in later versions) when you have the Rainbow Wing in your inventory.

The Burned Tower is believed to be the original home of Lugia though you can find this Pokemon on the Whirl Islands instead (only if you have the Silver Wing in your pack). Both towers are nonetheless visitable, and you may find some valuable fire Pokemon to catch at the one.
6. A Bug-Catching Contest occurs at the National Park on how many days of the week?

Answer: Three

The National Park can be found north of Goldenrod City at a corner on the map between Routes 35 and 36, and while you can enter it at any point in time, it hosts a Bug-Catching Contest on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, allowing you to go into its extensive grass areas to catch numerous bug-type Pokemon for judging. You only have twenty Park Balls (and the use of one Pokemon) to get the best you can find.

Interestingly, in Generation II, there are no new bug-type Pokemon that can be caught here-- they're all Kanto-featured.

The winner of the contest gets a Sun Stone, which evolves Gloom into Bellossom or Sunkern into Sunflora.
7. Which of these is HM07?

Answer: Waterfall

Though HM01 through HM05 are identical to what they were in Generation 1 (Cut, Fly, Surf, Strength, and Flash in that order), Generation II introduces HM06 (Whirlpool) and HM07 (Waterfall) as well, further increasing the obstacles you can overcome in your adventure. HM06 is a little less useful for progress, though it will allow a trained Pokemon to swim over dangerous whirlpools that block passage in spots like the Whirl Islands. HM07, found in the Ice Path, is essential for progress though, allowing you to ascend Tohjo Falls and head eastward to the Indigo Plateau.
8. Which of these Pokemon can be purchased with coins at the Game Corner in Goldenrod City?

Answer: Abra

Similar to its counterpart in Celadon City, the Goldenrod City Game Corner allows you to take a seat at one of a handful of machines to press your luck in the effort of earning coins. These coins can't be spent outside the prize counters here, but the rewards are quite nice (and exclusive).

In addition to being able to collect rare and powerful TMs at one counter, players can also exchange coins for Pokemon. Abra can be purchased in "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal", but the three different versions have exclusives otherwise. "Gold" has Ekans and Dratini; "Silver" has Sandshrew and Dratini; "Crystal" has Cubone and Wobbuffet.
9. A treasure enthusiast in Ecruteak City will be responsible for giving you which of these Key Items?

Answer: Itemfinder

If it helps for the sake of understanding, the Itemfinder is renamed into the Dowsing Rod in later Generations, an indication towards its function and capabilities. Players can use this item in any location to, ideally, get an alert towards any items which may not actually appear before you (in the shape of a Pokeball) on the screen; you would need to go to a spot and press the action button to locate it wherever it might be hidden. You can equip this item, binding it to 'Select', to use it on the fly, but there are only so many hidden items out there, so it might be a time-consuming endeavour to go for them on the regular.
10. A King's Rock will evolve which of these Pokemon?

Answer: Poliwhirl

The King's Rock can be found deep in Slowpoke Well and it's a particularly useful item for any Pokemon to hold since it increases the chance that attacks will cause foes to flinch instead of take their next turn. For two Pokemon, however, it also serves the purpose of, like an evolution stone, pushing them to the next evolutionary stage when traded to another player. Slowpoke is an obvious one, considering its source, making it evolve into Slowking instead of Slowbro.

The other, possibly unexpected evolution is for Poliwhirl, who already evolves into Poliwrath when a Water Stone is used. With King's Rock, it'll instead involve into the brand-new Politoed.
