Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The adventure through Silent Hill is difficult, and saving your progress is a wise decision. You can save your game from which of these, found throughout the game?

Answer: Red squares

James Sunderland, having received a letter from his wife, decides to pursue her to the town she used to dream of. The catch is that Mary died three years ago; she couldn't have beckoned him out to Silent Hill. Nonetheless, the story begins at a parking lot overlooking the woods near Toluca Lake, and James will need to proceed into the valley, through the graveyard, and past Silent Hill Ranch to come across the fog-drenched streets of Eastern South Vale.

Along the way, James will find his first Save Point, a red square at an old well. These red squares will be found in notable locations throughout the game, giving the opportunity for a breather and to take stock. Perhaps the red squares have a meaning of their own.
2. James must fix which of these in order to find a way into the Wood Side Apartment complex?

Answer: Jukebox

As James enters Silent Hill he'll find that the town is almost labyrinthine; he'll pass through fences and alleys before reaching the streets proper, all the while following trails of slime, blood, and other odd way markers. The shops and storefronts, long-since boarded up, hold secrets and creatures, and all he'll have to fight these off is a plank of wood with some nails in the end.

The way through this part of town falls to the use of a jukebox along the wall of Neely's Bar on the corner of Neely St. and Sanders St., and James has to find pieces of it around town to repair it and collect a key from inside. All of this will lead him onward to the Wood Side Apartments, one step closer to Rosewater Park, which may be what Mary believed to be their 'special spot'.
3. In the Wood Side Apartments, James will encounter who of these for the first time?

Answer: Pyramid Head

Rosewater Park is on the other side of the Wood Side Apartments, but getting there is complicated, and James will have to navigate the claustrophobic corridors and apartments to find a way out, and even that's a bit tough since a new, unexpected being with a giant, metal pyramid for a head starts to appear, intervening at unfortunate moments.

If James can make it through the different quarters of the building, up into the destroyed second floor and under-renovations third floor, he can find the pieces to use the Coin Cabinet in the manager's office and find his way up to Apartment 201, perhaps the only well-kept spot in the complex, to find a passage...right into the Blue Creek Apartments next door.
4. In the Blue Creek Apartments, James will encounter a room filled with which of these, home to a combination lock to open?

Answer: Moths

Crossing into the Blue Creek Apartments, what James finds will be more disturbing as it appears that if not corrosion, then time has done a number on the building next door, sending him through another maze-like apartment complex with more dangerous foes. This building will have a big puzzle in the form of a grandfather clock for which he'll need to locate three different hands and place them properly, in sequence, telling the correct times, to advance through, and finding those hands may prove tough considering the unique challenges for each one.

Eventually, as the apartment wears itself away around him, he'll finally reach the courtyard to find the Pyramid Head foe waiting for him. If James can survive this brief combat, an air raid siren will sound, the enemy will depart on his own, and he'll be able to follow out the exist to Western South Vale.
5. Reaching the pier in Rosewater Park, who will James encounter, much to his concern?

Answer: Maria

Heading back into the foggy streets of South Vale, this time on the western side, James will finally reach his destination, Rosewater Park, and arrive at the pier he believed Mary alluded to as their 'special spot' only to find a woman named Maria waiting there, and while she may look like Mary at a glance, she's someone else entirely. Maria will recommend that they head somewhere else in town that might be considered special, and this will lead to the duo pairing up as they head through the gates at Jack's Inn and attempt to find their way to Mary's trail.

The detour will send James to Heaven's Gate (the strip club where Maria may have worked), the Moonlight Grove (where Maria will talk about a local legend who was said to have been exiled to the island in the lake when she became ill), and the Reverie Theater, where Maria will stay outside. Ultimately, all of this exploring will make James more restless and uncertain; he doesn't even remember these places from when he and his wife visited.

The stop at the theater will allow James to reunite with Eddie, now feeling better, and the young girl from earlier, Laura, who'll race off to Brookhaven Hospital. James and Maria will follow in pursuit. It's the only destination they can plod along to at this point.
6. The Bubble Heads in Brookhaven Hospital appear to be, at one point, which of these?

Answer: Nurses

James and Maria will arrive at Brookhaven Hospital to find that all of the power is out, so after heading into the basement to kickstart the generator, James can explore in earnest (while Maria naps in a safe room). Naturally, the building is quite dangerous; enemies are everywhere, and new foes, Bubble Heads, appear to be stronger than other foes before, often wielding pipes they use to attack with.

The inevitable goal here is to solve the odd safe in the Director's Office, and doing that means finding three patient bracelets around the building. It'll get James to the roof and then, eventually, to the third floor corridor where Laura has holed up. Unfortunately, she's a bit of a meanie; she'll trick James and lock him in with the Flesh Lip, a dangerous, inhuman foe that will eventually fall with enough damage, but result in James getting pulled through the ceiling, left unconscious, and taken into an alternate reality version of the hospital.
7. How many chains/locks seal the box found in the Otherworld version of Brookhaven Hospital?

Answer: Three

James will awaken in an alternate reality version of Brookhaven Hospital after his encounter with the Flesh Lip, and it won't be unlike his time in the Blue Creek Apartment building-- desiccated, dangerous, dirty. He'll find his way to the nurse's station on the second floor without encountering anything out of sorts, but there, in the lobby, he'll encounter a chained box with three locks, all of which must be opened via different means to indicate the path out. Opening the box will reveal nothing inside, but it will show him the way forward, through a door elegantly carved with the form of a beautiful woman.

The final door will require a trip down into the hospital basement where, surprisingly, James will reunite with a terrified Maria. The pair will navigate their way back to their exit and proceed together, despite Maria's initial hesitation towards taking this route, and she'll be proven correct in her hunch. The pair will be pursued by Pyramid Head and, though James will make it to safety in an elevator at the end of the corridor, Maria won't; the being will impale her on its massive blade and keep her for himself, leaving James all alone again.
8. James will pass through Eastern South Vale, one more time, in the Otherworld. It's there that he encounters which foe for the first time?

Answer: Mandarin

Chasing Laura out into the rain, James will proceed through the streets, homes, businesses, and tunnels of Eastern South Vale, revisiting spots he's already been in some cases (like Neely's Bar, where the jukebox has been restored!). The goal here, in addition to finding Laura, which he won't, is to head north on Neely St. to find the "door that wakes in darkness." There's a key that lets loose the abyss, but it's in Rosewater Park, buried at the feet of a praying woman. It means heading to the intersection of Neely and Nathan to find a route back towards Western South Vale.

To get there, however, James will enter a previously unseen tunnel with a grated floor that hangs over what appears to be a bottomless pit. He can't fall through, fortunately, but there are monsters (called Mandarins) hanging below, ready to strike from underneath.

Crossing to the other side will get James out the other end of the Otherworld, and he'll emerge into the west part of the town to find that night has fallen.
9. Before returning to Western South Vale, James has to dig up a key to access the Historical Society building. Inside he finds a stairwell leading in which direction?

Answer: Downwards

Arriving in Rosewater Park again, this time to collect a buried key, James will run into Angela, who claims that South Vale isn't the way she remembers it from when she lived there. In fact, she doesn't think her mother, who she came here to find, was ever really there. Unfortunately, Angela hasn't seen Laura come through, so once James digs up the Historical Society Key, he can proceed on the already-trodden ground of Western South Vale.

If he'd already visited all of the establishments here with Maria, all he needs to do is open the Historical Society building and head inside. In the furthest wall of the building he'll find a staircase carved into the wall, and he'll follow that down into the darkness for what seems like forever before he finds an entryway into Toluca Prison.
10. There are four different wards in Toluca Prison that are represented by animals. Which is NOT one of them?

Answer: Wolf

James will arrive in Toluca prison perhaps unexpectedly after descending a staircase into the darkness and jumping into a couple of seemingly bottomless pits, but he won't be alone. In addition to the obvious monsters swarming the facilities, Eddie will be in the cafeteria, perhaps a bit less mentally well than before. The two will part ways, but James will still be tasked with finding a way to free himself from the building, passing through the different wards, each represented by a different animal (Eyeless Boar, Hornless Ox, Headless Serpent, and Wingless Dove) and accessed by playing with a scale and several weights in the prison yard.

James' time here will end with another descent, this time from the gallows, into an even deeper part of Silent Hill.
11. Which of these sections of the Labyrinth does not exist?

Answer: Weathered

Beyond Toluca Prison is a hellish labyrinth, and this begins with James encountering Angela and fighting the Abstract Daddy, a representation of her horror and anxiety. But the fight here will drop James off in a series of winding and hard-to-navigate chambers of different types, all while he encounters Maria, who he thought to be dead, trapped in a cell in the crossroads chamber.

A giant, revolving cube will be the key to reaching all of the different areas here starting with a rotten area, continuing to a desolate one (home to Pyramid Head's foundry), and ending off with a ruined one (home to a number of battles through old apartments). Eventually, James will escape using Pyramid Head's sword to forge a way through. Maria, once again, won't make it.

At the end of the path, James will jump into what appears to be his own grave, arriving in a meat packing facility to find Eddie Dombrowski still alive. The man isn't well, however, determining that Silent Hill dragged both of them in with no escape, and this will lead to a gunfight in the abattoir. If James can make it out alive, he'll find himself on the edge of Toluca Lake, his only remaining direction being out onto its waters in a canoe, hoping to find a way away from the nightmare.
12. It appears that James might find Mary when he reaches Lakeview Hotel. A map, found inside, suggests to head to which room with the caption 'waiting for you...'?

Answer: Room 312

James' canoe will come upon Lakeview Hotel, where he once spent time with Mary three years ago. At this point it's the only place be believes she might have been referring to when she beckoned him to South Vale in the first place. Picking up a map in the lobby he'll find a note saying 'waiting for you...', labeled on Room 312. Of course, it's a bit of a tough trail to get there.

In Lakeview Hotel, there will be hints pushing James along, but most of them will have him searching for a way to use the music box in the lobby while also encountering Laura and learning more about his late wife and getting his hands on an important video tape locked in the employee safe in the hotel basement.

When he has all of the pieces in place, he can head up to the 3F Corridor, open Room 312, and uncover the truth.
13. James will push Lakeview Hotel to appear in the Otherworld when he performs which action?

Answer: Plays a video tape

Pressing play on the VCR in Room 312, James will find that the contents of the video tape feature his and Mary's time in the room. She asks James to promise to bring her back. He never would. The video tape cuts to an upsetting and blurry sequence that James can't really make out before it cuts entirely. Laura will find him there, seated in front of the television, admitting that Mary is absolutely gone. He killed her.

James finds himself in the Otherworld version of the Lakeview Hotel to hear Mary's voice on his radio. She continues to beckon him to find her; he's so close. He'll pass back through the ruined building, finding a secret passage along the way, inevitably coming face-to-face with not one, but two Pyramid Head foes, both flanking a (somehow) still-alive Maria, who they promptly kill. James recognizes who Maria is, really, but it's all over now. He admits he doesn't need her anymore, but he still has to fight the Pyramid Heads. At least, this time, he's ready.

At the end of the battle, the Pyramid Heads, perhaps unexpectedly, will kill themselves, relinquishing the items James needs to continue on.
14. Who will James find in the final boss chamber, prepared to fight him in one last stand?

Answer: Maria

As James passes through the final corridors, he'll hear Mary's voice as she pleads with him to go home, but really, her monologue is of her on her deathbed, begging him to leave her alone. It'd be easier, she says, if she just died. She changes her mind in an instant, asking him to stay with her, lying that she'll be okay. And when James ascends to his final battleground he'll find something that appears in the form of Mary, but is really Maria. And Maria is just an image of 'Her'.

What ensues is a battle in stages in which 'Her' will showcase many of the dangerous attributes of past bosses-- waves of bugs, bladed cages, hiding and striking from the ceiling, lunging sharply. But after enough damage, she'll collapse and be trapped on the ground enough for James come in and take one final shot.
15. Is it possible for James to escape Silent Hill?

Answer: Yes

The ending James receives is reliant on choices and crossroads encountered throughout his trip to Silent Hill.

In one such ending, James will speak to Mary directly. She'll apologize, and so will he, but he'll admit the truth-- he killed her because he hated her. He wanted her out of the way; he wanted his life back. If that's true, she notes, then it's a shame he looks so sad. She'll hand him the letter she wrote for him before he departs. He'll find Laura and hand it to her in turn. And both of them will leave the town.

In another, James will realize that the grief, despite everything he's encountered and overcome, will be too much of a weight on his mind. Instead of leaving Silent Hill, he'll end his life.

In another, James will find Maria and take her with him, returning to his car overlooking Toluca Lake. She'll cough, indicating that perhaps she's not so unlike Mary, and he'll suggest that she have it checked out.

There are other endings that can be achieved, though these appear provided you've encountered the three canon scenarios. This said, you need to complete New Game+ to obtain them.
