Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was not a boxer included in the video game "Super Punch Out!"?

Answer: Mike Tyson

"Super Punch Out!" was the fourth game in the "Punch Out" lineup. The North American version of the boxing game was released in 1994. Fictional boxers were used in the game including one black boxer named Mr. Sandman, a white boxer named Bad Bull, and a white older boxer with grey hair called Super Macho Man. Mike Tyson was a real life heavyweight champion who did not appear in the release.
2. Which league officially licensed the "Madden 94" video game?

Answer: NFL

When it comes to American Football video games, the "Madden" series is the most famous brand. The game took a dramatic turn with the 1994 edition by using actual NFL team names and their logos. Previous versions only name teams by cities like Oakland or Green Bay, but at this edition the National Football League endorsed the game to add to the realism.

They were not able to get licenses for the NFL players until the next version.
3. Which boxer had his own SNES game in 1994?

Answer: Lennox Lewis

Riddick Bowe was the heavyweight boxing champion of the world in 1992 and again in 1995. He was the inspiration for the SNES version of "Riddick Bowe Boxing" which was first released in North America on January 1994. The game was released a few months earlier in Japan.

The game featured a career mode where your player would work their way up the ranks to hopefully reach the chance to face Riddick in the ring.
4. Which Super Nintendo video game was the chief competitor to the "Madden 94" franchise?

Answer: Tecmo Super Bowl 1993

The "Tecmo Super Bowl II" in 1994 was a sequel to the previous popular "Tecmo Super Bowl" game. "Tecmo" was the first football game to get a license to use actual rosters from the National Football League. While their primary competitor "Madden 94" did get a license to use NFL team names, their players were fictional but both allowed you to play in a Super Bowl at the season's end. "NFL Blitz" didn't debut until 1999 and was released in 2000 on many game systems but not the SNES, rather the Nintendo 64.
5. How many race car driver options did "Super Mario Kart" allow you to choose from?

Answer: Eight

"Super Mario Kart" was released on September 1, 1992 in North America on the SNES. The game was a racing game using the all-star characters of the "Super Mario" video game series. "Super Mario Kart" allowed you to choose from Mario, Luigi, Princess (in future releases was known as Princess Peach), Yoshi, Bowser, Donkey Kong Jr., Koopa Troopa and Toad. Each player had a special feature on their car that allowed players to gain an advantage based on their character choice.
6. "Mega Man Soccer" was played in space and not on a soccer field.

Answer: False

"Mega Man Soccer" was released on the SNES in April 1994 in North America. During a traditional soccer match, an explosion occurs and all of the human soccer players have been replaced with robot players. The game continued on a soccer field but characters from "Mega Man" video game series took over the game action. Each of the robots had a unique special power that helped them playing soccer.
7. Which Hall of Fame baseball player had his own signature video game on the SNES?

Answer: Ken Griffey Jr.

Ken Griffey Jr was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016 after a career with the Seattle Mariners. The "Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball" game featured actual major league baseball team names and stadiums but was unable to obtain the rights to the actual professional players names. The fictional players did have very similar attributes to the pros they replaced.
8. Michael Jordan was the highest rated player in the "NBA Live 95" video game.

Answer: False

"NBA Live 95" showcased the NBA Finals teams from the 1994 NBA Finals. In that series, Hakeem Olajuwon led the Houston Rockets to the championship over the New York Knicks with center Patrick Ewing. Michael Jordan did not sign NBA's Players Association's shared licensing agreement and was not a part of any of the major video game during this era.
9. Which wrestler was NOT included in Super Nintendo's "WWF Royal Rumble" but was on the Sega Genesis version?

Answer: Hulk Hogan

In 1993, "WWF Royal Rumble" made its way to the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis systems. The idea of a Royal Rumble is multiple wrestlers are in the ring at the same time and the last man standing in the ring wins the match. The North American release on Super Nintendo saw wrestlers Bret Hart, The Undertaker, Rick Flair, Mr. Perfect, Yokozuna, Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels included in the video game.

The Sega Genesis did not include Flair or Mr. Perfect but added Hulk Hogan and Hacksaw Jim Duggan to their roster of available players.
10. Which was NOT a catchphrase popular in the "NBA Jam" game on the SNES?

Answer: Let's Get Ready to Rumble!

My personal favorite of the SNES games was "NBA Jam". The two player action game featured teams of two NBA teammates versus all of the other NBA teams. When a player hit a few shots in a row, the game would say "He's heating up!". An exaggerated dunk would hear "Boomshakalaka". A blocked shot would be followed by "Get that out of here!". The voice of the video game was Tim Kitzrow.
